Saw them live. Brilliant visuals too. I bought Autobahn in 74. Yes I'm old lol. Followed their career ever since. They were never prolific in their releases. Their pinnacle for me was Computer World in 81. Please check it out. So revolutionary at the time and still a classic to me 👌

Ah... this album, Electric Cafe, was fantastic. Definitely a huge influence on electronic music in general. Thanks for giving it some exposure!

When they began they had the ideas, a lot of imagination, but no instruments to play with. There were synthesizers and keyboards, but not like the ones we know today. So they had to create their own instruments. The electronic drums are a concept of Kraftwerk. No one before produced such sounds, that in today's music are so common. They were absolut pioneers and because their instruments and conceptions are still a benchmark nowadays. They are timeless and will never get old. In other kinds of music you hear influences of Blues, Rock'n'Roll, Jazz, Funk, Rap etc. Who influenced Kraftwerk ?

This was the radio edit. The album version is so much better. The main instruments was the Synclavier II and a Yamaha DX-7. The Synclavier II that Kraftwerk had was a fully loaded version with sampling and full recording capabilities. The album before this was Computer World the Tour De France single. The main delay between the teo albums was that Kraftwerk waited to learn both the Synclavier II and DX-7 completely

Excellent review, they were around from the early 70s try listening to their earlier catalogue. From that there was a group that started electronic dance music called Cabaret Voltaire from the 70s through to more recent times, try listening to, Sensoria, Nag Nag Nag, Just Fascination, Hypnotised, Vasto, to name just a few songs.

At the time, the album Electric Cafe was sort of lost moment. The previous album Computer World hit the nerve of the time 80's yuppie world and then still fresh home computers while they had a big hit with "The Model". As told by Wolfgan Flur, they scrapped the follow up album which was supposed to be called "Techno Pop", starting to re-assemble the studio instead. Thus their sound became bit dated by the time Electric Cafe finally appeared. The singles "Tour De France" and "Telephone Call" are from the in between era, the latter from the "Techno Pop" sessions.

To really get Kraftwerk first it helps if your European and know the krautrock movement and art rock vibe their music is concept like Jean Michel Jarre and a lot of their music came from synths they built themselves from other early synths that filled a room you listen to Autobahn it derived from the concept of the vibe the band would get from driving round the autobahn at night for something to do

Had this album on cassette in high school. Played it on my Sony boombox until the ribbons wore off. 😉 Computer World, in my opinion, is their masterpiece album though. Nostalgia setting in hard. Thanks for this review!

IMHO, Kraftwerk exist in an emperor's new clothes world. Woe betide anyone who speaks against them. They do have a few brilliant songs but to be honest, most of their stuff is quite hard to listen to.
