Brazil is a really big country, so when football started here our teams played only whitin their own states, because travel was difficult and expansive. That competition at the start of the season is the state championship, it used to be really important but after the BR league started in 1971 the state championships lost their importance. Many people now want the competition gone because it makes our calendar way too big, but without it some smaller clubs would have to stop their football department and a big brazilian tradition would be gone. Thankyou for that insight into the origins of Brazilian football Jaime. The smaller clubs in the lower leagues are so important for many reasons and if one of them is your local team then its even more important to you as fans. Here in England its the same. Many of our smaller clubs are really struggling financially and it hurts our game. I just wish our football governing body could understand that and do something about it. Nobody wants to see a club go out of business.

The team you lost Copa do Brasil, Guarani, won the serie a in 1978, they were very strong in the 80`s. But now they struggle a lot, always playing in lower divisions, huge debts, etc.

Paulista cup's are regional cup competitions. For each brazil region three is cup competitions where teams from specific region play.

Not exactly regional, but State Level competitions. So there are 26 states + Federal District which one of them with this State championships from January - April The Paulista is the São Paulo state competition. The Carioca is the Rio de Janeiro state competition and so on. So Santos will play in the Paulista, alongside with Palmeiras, São Paulo, Corinthians etc. Vasco will play with Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo in the Carioca. Other teams will play in their particular State competition. It gets a bit harder in the Northeast region because there is the Nordeste Cup alongside with the State Championships. So Bahia will play in the Bahia State Championship but also in the Nordeste Cup. The same goes to Ceara or Fortaleza, but instead they play in the Ceara State Championship. These tournaments are relevant due to the state rivalries, but they lost appeal in the last few years considering how important the Cup has become (due to the financial rewards of advancing) and most bigger teams using this competitions as a sort of preseason experimentation of players and tactics.

Try to understand a little more of the history of the regions and you'll get to see why the clubs from southeast and south are biggers. Historically capital concentration.

Santos is the team I support! love to see this rebuild (we def need it lol). Also, Santos means "Saints", that is why i picked Southampton as my English team. Santos is very very popular for playing tons of youth players very early on the first team!

Paulistão is a state competition. The real important competitions are Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (similar to premier league), Copa do Brasil (similar to Carabao/FA Cup) and Libertadores (south america champions league).

Just a heads up: Brazil's capital is actually Brasilia, which has fewer clubs than both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo's cities. So, the clubs with bigger attendance you must have meant are probably Fluminense, Flamengo, Botafogo and Vasco Da Gama, in Rio. 🙏🙏

every team in brazil plays a "local" competition before the main league starts, in april. Some of the teams plays even two. So, we have our main cup, our main league and a local league (Brazi is so big, we play a "estate" competition. For example, Santos plays the Campeonato Paulista (paulista comes from "Sao Paulo)). Flamengo is from Rio, so they play the campeonato Carioca. And so on. It is not that important, but it is at the same time. Basically because you should be competing against your main rivals (local ones).And in Sao Paulo there are somevery good teams competing as well. It is basically not enough if you win, but if you lose supporters will be mad.

Great content, Luke! I just signed Leonardo for Southampton in season 2. Scored twice against United as a sub on debut, a worldie and assist the following game….currently on international duty for two weeks, but he looks a steal for £15m and a good foil for Sekou Mara. Look forward to more rebuilds!

Great rebuild. Inspired me to try my hand in Brazil once I am bored of my current save! Problem is I am fully stuck on getting the kits to work. Using the FC12 kit pack. All real name fixes, etc. done. I've got them saved in the FM23 folder > graphics > kits > and then folders for various kit packs. All the others work fine apart from Brazil. It's driving me crazy!

One of the reasons why The Strongest do good at home is cause of the altitude of the pitch and country. Very hard to breath and run at the same time in Bolivia cause you get tired fast And when they travel they are usually used to the conditions in Bolivia😊

Luke, Omega Dad, thankyou so much for doing this rebuild, I absolutely loved it. I really like Brazilian football and Santos are my favourite team in Brazil and youre right they have struggled in recent years so it was great to see what you managed to achieve with them. They must have a fantastic youth academy because so many great players have come from Santos and Luke, you looked like you had a number of budding stars in your youth ranks. Omega Dad, thanks for your usual fantastic facts and history of the club. It really does enhance these rebuilds as you are left feeling you know so much more about each club you rebuild. Lol Bolivian clubs was always win at hone because La Paz, their capital is 3.6 Kilometers in the air, on a huge mountain. They are better conditioned play in those heights and win at home a lot because of that.

Hi, "campeonato paulistão" is the state competition. Not a pre-season friendly. Actually, it's very traditional. Every Brazilian State has their own state competition. The "Campeonato Brasileiro" (Brazilian Championship) only started in 1971. If you need more info about competitions in Brazil let me know. By the way, "Paulistão" is the São Paulo state competition. São Paulo is the state of São Paulo and the city of Santos is a kind of small town in the coast. The majority of the Santos supporters are in the city of São Paulo. That's why the Santos Stadium is so small. They talked about to upgrade the stadium but there's no space in the city to do so.

I love managing in Brazil, so really enjoyed seeing a Brazilian rebuild! And some of the Brazilian kits are just beautiful. There's so many great clubs to pick from in Brazil - especially as it seems so common for relatively big sides to suddenly get relegated - but Santos was a strong choice :)

@@omegadad it was a great job, just wanted to mention as a feedback. There's a lot of brazilian clubs that can lead to a great saves, hope to see more in the future! I think Bahia might be a good one next. They have a great history, but have been a mix of mid table and yoyo club and very recently became part of the City group.

The state championships are highly regarded here, but the discussion on whether the Série A clubs should be playing with their best 11s is growing, as you face off teams from Série B, C, D and what can be called non-league as they only play the state champs. Try to imagine teams like Chelsea, Arsenal and the Manchester duo playing against fifth tier teams at the start of the season in a league that gives you nothing more than another trophy. That's the state championships in short.
