Today, we take a stroll through the Urban Caravans factory and expose the secret behind there insanely high payloads and low tare weights. These Urban Caravans are light Weight, strong and Durable and the Big secret is their Tungsten Tig Welded aluminium frame. These vans are wood free and offer the highest resistance to rot and deterioration. The furniture is CNC cut with traditional, trialed and tested lounge and groove joinery. Urban Caravans are 100% Australian owned, Australian run and 100% Australian made. We take a look at the X-grid 12v setup including BMpro front end, Enerdrice DCDC charger, 400ah of lithium batteries and 840 Watts of solar. These van are trull the pinnacle of touring and offgrid living!

Thanks for the vid guys. We met some guys on our lap last year with an urban. Nice van. Caravan quality is definitely an issue in the industry but it’s post purchase service which is paramount. How quickly these guys can help & resolve any issues. We know the components are the ones that really cause the pain. Keeping doing you!

Ha ha once you own a caravan you quickly learn 😃. For me, parts are the majority of the issue. Yes people blame the caravan manufacturer which isn’t right. Some of the main manufacturers of the van components are pretty rubbish at customer service and creating a quality product. It’s a real shame cause these issues are what cause angst for people. Glad you’re happy with your van. The vid was great!

Wow, how cool. The green van you showed us happened to be shipped to an SA dealer. They showed us the inside without us walking in, but recognised it. We signed up to build one that day. Hope it delivers, keep up the good work guys, love your work!

Hey you guys what a amazing video. Wish it was longer covering all aspects, but it helps a lot seeing what effort is going in to the build. Very nice to see quality is king and following the norm does not mean you are on the right track. That aluminium frame is insane, Steve is the man. What material is used for the cabinetry, is it plywood or mdf? Is the roof a single piece similar to the floor?

It’s a heat treated (moisture sucked out of it) ply wood. Urban don’t use chipboard mdf. It’s a one piece roof!!

just ...35mm no voltage drop.... it depends on how many ampere you are able to charge with! I have on my motorhome (not even trailer) 50mm for alternator charging, 2x35A 12V

Nice job guys, thanks for this show n tell, Urban do look like a really nice van/product, I would definitely consider. In a recent vid on ur expenses & how u do all this, you said ur Urban was $40k, was that all inclusive, ie, with ur extra mods & solar upgrades? Did u choose ur system config & parts, or was it mostly as they roll them out? I know u had the cable size upgraded to 35mm, was that ur main or only stipulation of change to their system? Or was there more Keelan input involved in the solar? Cheers, I like it!

Hey mate great van but no it’s not 40k our last one was 40k which was a cheap Chinese imported hybrid. This one is around 100k. I love my 12v bigger the better!

@@SarahandKeelanTravels yes of course, that makes sense, i musta misunderstood that part of the breakdown. And yes, I can see you know what ur doing with ur 12v system, it looks great. I have an old 40’ Bus as a ‘Reckless Abandon on a property up north (Yeppoon) I have set up Off Grid with a 24v system from 12v, still considering a 48v system tho, but the 24v is doing a good job so far on 1 x 3kw AIO inverter, 2 x 24v 5kw lifepo packs & 2kw of panels so far. Im still working on it between other jobs, but the idea is to be able to support Air Con through the Summer without relying on generators. Love ur Urban setup, looks great, enjoying ur series. Cheers

Its SOO nice that you can take a joke Bruce, and of course you know our relationship really really well only seeing 20 minutes of it per week.. you must really be in the position to judge and comment.. I would go to the extent of saying, getting on your keyboard and typing something bad about someone you THINK you know, but in reality have no idea about, is a bad habit. Keelan does a lot more than he lets on, and our "work" balance is refined and we both share the loads, doing the jobs the other person hates to do. you have not the slightest idea about our relationship. Looks great but the installation of the polystyrene foam insulation segments in the aluminium frame looks like they’ve been cut from a refrigerator packaging carton.

As I said in your van run through, does that BM Pro only charge at 35 amps on 240 v. If so, that's pathetic in the modern world with Lifo4 batteries. Otherwise luvved the vid. Seems a good caravan. And Oz built.

Why is it pathetic? The system is designed for offgrid use to very rarely be plugged into 240v Even so, 35amps is ample time to charge the 500odd amp hours of lithium from dead to full over night. You have to remember we never go to caravan parks so when we do it’s just to do washing and we are there for a minimum of one night. Never have we plugged into 240 to charge the system for a few hours? That just never happens when your full time living in the van. We really don’t need a bigger charger.. there’s no point for us and I doubt anyone else either. Don’t be fooled Colin by others preaching you need there massive systems to get out there and travel. We always preach not needing the best of the best to do it. We are finding others opinions on 12v systems are mis construed and they are often mis lead to believe you need a 200amp charger and a bloody solar power plant and a million amp hours of lithium.

@@SarahandKeelanTravels Stand by it. Understand what you say and agree with everything except the 35 amps being sufficient. Todays technology that's lousy. Even a Redarc dc/dc can put in 50 amps of 12v, 35 amps of 240v is pi$$weak.

With todays tech I find the very poor charging rate a big turn off. Even though I like all the other features. I would not consider buying it if I was setting up a van. That's old lead acid charging rate tech and needs updating.

I have to wonder with new gen and border openings, if time coming will show a glut of caravans on the market. Doesn’t matter if these $130k Urbana are marketed as a better van. People just won’t be sucked in to paying for these overpriced trailers. And Australian made doesn’t really mean anything these days other than ripping off the customer. I do like them so probably salty as they’re out of my price bracket.😂 I’ll see how this ages this time next year

Maybe, maybe not.. it’s the Australian dream now to travel around Australia! Instead of buying a house and putting yourself in 35 years of debt. Buy a caravan and 4wd and off you go. Also urban don’t rip off their customers. Same build quality & build tech as a bush tracker but 50k less in price. So very well priced if you know what your actually looking at. Sounds like your salty

No offence but AOR were using this technology 15 yrs ago but have now moved to insulated sandwich panels, as have most high end manufacturers.

Good on them haha 😂 but Going from ali frame to full composite isn’t a bragging point. The reason they have done that is because changing construction methods will save them roughly 10-15 hours of labour per van and save them money, it isn’t a superior construction.

Aluminium frame is better than full sandwich panels (no frame). Just ask bushtracker and the research they have done.

@Sarah and Keelan Travels Welding aluminium is a way of saving time too buddy, welds crack over time, rivets do not.
