I weaned our calves.
They went okay but the market isn't super strong and the season hasn't been as good as last year for cattle feed.
I also have some work todo to make our weaners more desirable.
Overall I'm happy to have them gone and now the cows can settle and get into tidy up mode which is basically eat all the undesirable feed on the farm.
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy the video.

I enjoy your vlog. I live in Queensland and have a small farm with beef. Comparing prices your animals would have gotten around $1200 each at todays prices. There is a high demand here for beef animals due to the overall stock numbers being very low as we were expecting a very dry and hot Summer. Instead we were very wet and humid with a lot of grass growth. Thanks for the vid

Wow that’s a huge difference! We were similar last year, with most of the country having plenty of feed whereas this year most of the country has been struggling for rain. Thanks

Great Video, I had worked out from the last video i watched you were in the south west NI, the road you drove the cattle past i googled and eventually got a result, you can't be far away from my old primary school buddy Michael Cottrell, east of Taihape, I am very familiar with the Feilding Saleyards, thanks for sharing

It has been a couple of weeks since you’ve posted. I hope you are just busy and that there is no problem! Look forward to seeing your next video! Do you ever have puppies that you train? That would make for very interesting videos. It is very interesting how the dogs understand what you want with your commands and whistle.

Thanks Richard, Yes I’m trying to edit one as I write this. I agree, I am hoping to get one done at some stage training dogs but haven’t got around to it yet. Thanks for the message!

Thanks Graeme, The steers I will keep and finish on the farm, and that was all of our heifer weaners that went to the sale yards. We just have a small number of cows to help with pasture management on the hills. Cheers

Great video, flash sale yards compared to our local yards. On our way home from the South Island we stop at a nice little cafe called brown sugar, very nice cafe in Taihape. Keep it up

Well our really local yards were torn down years ago so feilding are our main ones and happen to be the biggest in the country. Nice, best place in town for coffee! Next time flick me a message on instagram, It’d be cool to meet you guys!

Prices seem similar to here in Aus. Why don’t you keep some as replacement’s? How much would the steers same weight have made. We sold our calves last week at a weaner sale as well. Steers made 3.65 and heifers 3.00. Not great with costs the way they are but it certainly could be worse. Good video again. You get plenty of early starts.

I’ve thought about keeping replacements a few times but I’m trying to keep a simple system. If I keep replacements I have to buy a Heifer bull, have another stock class that requires good feeding and be on call for a month over winter/spring for pulling calves. So I’ve opted to buy in old cows and plan to work on a couple of hundred dollars a head difference in a cull and buying in a replacement. That’s very similar then! That’s true! Thanks and thanks for the comment!

We buy in old cows to keep it simple. That way I don’t need to keep another stock class and deal with calving and bulling heifers. Thanks!

These are all grass-fed grass-finished cattle? Or do you feed them extra stuff (is it grain?) to get their weight up before auction?
@HillCountryFarmer

Everything is grass fed. We supplement in the winter with balage on crop. A lot of dairy farmers supplement with palm kernel or grain but 99% of Nz sheep and beef farmers only feed grass and balage grown on farm.
