Ali and Denise are sick of their ugly house. After their house had been completely destroyed by previous owners, their house is the “eyesore” of the street. Sinking $265,000 into the house, the couple can’t afford to move so turn to George Clarke to help design their ugly house into a lovely house. Will they get the family house of their dreams? Or will they bee stuck in this nightmare house?

I love this architect. She is open and honest. She tells them up front that all of her ideas will cost too much but they can choose what change they'd like to invest in. She is much more down to earth and honest than some of the other architects who pretty much force people to go above budget.
@Dark_Aeon
@Dark_Aeon Жыл бұрын
I actually did not like her approach, because she didn't show them a second option that 100% fits in their budget. And with renovations, you need to also leave a 15% additional margin for underlying issues (like what happened here later). Since she's changing their brief, she should've started with two ideas, it's common practice.
@Dark_Aeon

@Jasveer Singh Bal if she left out parts of the house, she would still miss the brief-which was to design the entire house within the budget. It was 100% possible without some of the glass partitions and other ideas.

The frustrating about this show, is every time, George says, now the architect will go away and design something to their budget... And the first thing the architect always says, upon presenting the plans, is that the design is outside of their budget, and they will have to compromise. If the architect openly states that the design is outside of the budget, they should be fired, becausenitnwas a brief to design a home within a budget.

I would disagree with you. She offered options. She said that 'it's going to be like a menu' and she delivered. It is up to the clients to make their final picks out of that 'menu' depending on what thier priorities are. If you ask me, that sounds great.
@MsFitz134
@MsFitz134 Жыл бұрын
Yup. Not only is it out of the budget, but so often much of the budget is eaten up in making the home look interesting and unique rather than on actually delivering the things the clients ask for. If I went to an architect and asked them to help me add an extra bedroom and bathroom to my home for $50K, and they offered me a fancy modern living/dining/kitchen area for $80K... I wouldn't be hiring them. Doesn't matter how beautiful their design is, it's not what I asked for.

My grandfather was a builder, and the very first lesson he taught was never over improve your house. No matter how long we live in it, someday we (or our heirs) will have to sell it. There is always a balancing between neighborhood 'feel', costs and resale. The architect's 'menu' options briefly touched on this, but I think the older gentleman who'd grown up on the crescent nailed it - they'll never recoup their investment financially, only in their quality of life while they live there. THAT is a very personal decision for every family. While this finished house is very beautiful, I think it missed the 'teenage' brief. As the kids age, they'll more likely hang out in their upstairs bedrooms with their friends while adults congregate in the delightful kitchen/living room/garden spaces. A very interesting show that raises much food for thought and discussion.

One of the main issues that the couple wanted addressed was that the adults had to retreat to their bedroom when the teenagers brought over their friends. Looks to me like they still don’t really have a retreat other than their primary bedroom. The music room has no comfortable seating and the teens will be going from kitchen to living room during visits. Both kids have bigger bedrooms to accommodate double beds - why? A twin is big enough for one adult. And there is no closet space in the girl’s third floor loft. The loft could have been turned into the teen hangout zone instead.

If this show is anything to go by, building science in the UK is at least 20 years behind the rest of the developed world.

this was probably filmed 15-20 years ago. Go to see whats being built in London in the last 15 years.... we are not behind. Watch a program called Grand Designs hosted by Kevin McCloud

The old neighbor is the smart one. Putting so much money into a house you cannot make money on is not smart. Going so over budget risks them of losing it altogether if something unexpected pops up in their lives.

BUT WE CAN'T BE TOO SURE OF THAT, IT'S A NEW ERA WE LIVE IN, THINGS DO CHANGE, PROPERTY MIGHT SELL DOUBLE IT'S ORIGINAL PRICING PLUS RENOVATION COSTS. YOUNGER COUPLE MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN BUYING THE HOUSE, SO I THINK IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY, OTHER NEIGHBOURS MIGHT WANNA START RENOVATING THEIR HOMES AS WELL AND THE WHOLE NEIGHBOURHOOD AND PROPERTY VALUES MIGHT JUST GO UP.

They’re not trying to flip the house, they’re trying to enjoy it and have as much time as possible there. Also….I highly doubt that the house doesn’t increase in price….there’s a housing crisis going on. People will definitely pay for the upgrades! The old man is living in the 1980s mindset.

Working with these famous high-end architects is like a poor person winning the lottery. Most regular people don't know how to manage a budget and spend it all in a year, ruining their lives. Same here. These people got greedy with design options and will pay for many sleepless nights long after the build is done.

Clarke needs to preface his presentations by explaining to people the role of an architect, as they are trained. He illustrates it during these videos, one can conclude what that role is, when played at its best. But, per these comments, people aren't absorbing it.

Kudos to this architect for giving them a tasteful exterior rather than the harsh black cladding that I've seen on several episodes of this show. The glass separating the kitchen and living area seems unnecessary. It may only serve to keep food smells in, but doesn't allow for conversation between people in the different rooms even though they can see one another. It just seems like something that will be burdensome to clean as well.

Why is the background music so loud it drowns out the commentary?

I get really annoyed with architects who dont consider the owners budget...so they bring all these wonderful ideas but then say sorry but you cant afford them! Why not bring them a design they can afford? I hate the porch it looks like a box stuffed on the front of the house...I think they could have come up with a different design because the front of the house is different to the back and it isnt in keeping with the rest of the houses. To me it looks like they have tried to make it look like a modern house when clearly its not from the front! The back is a different matter it is not facing all the other houses! Also the doors they have used off the kitchen look strange because its a modern kitchen with modern glass panels and they they have those fake shaker hollow design doors...who's bright idea was that!

It looks nice of course, but why do they always feel the need to disrupt the neighbourhood style? Especially with this one, I just don't understand why they could keep the red brick details, would've given it a little of the original character and might have been a nice gesture to the neighbours. This feels slightly rude

Why do they make the homeowners feel like they are being greedy and "what to have everything?" The architect put the plans with "EVERYTHING" in it and then they tell them, "you can't have everything!" How stupid is that? This show is getting on my nerves. What dumb producer accepted that? They ought to be fired.
