Over a period of two years, Mark Cowen and his crew travelled to thirty U.S. states and ten European cities, to interview the veterans of Easy Company. The stories told by the veterans themselves, create a history of the Second World War from the point of view of this heroic company of men, made famous in the mini-series Band of Brothers.

One of the crew members that did these interviews said that family members would pour into town when they came to the home of whoever they were interviewing. At first, he thought it was because of the 'Hollywood factor'. He soon realized that was not the reason. It was because it was the first time any of these men even talked about their experience and they wanted to be there to hear and to support.

I retired from the Army, served in Germany did combat tours, for 21 years. I had a chance to meet these gentleman, especially Bill. We talked for a while and he was such a good man, he respected me and actually thanked me for my service. I nearly broke down. What an incredible interaction. I will never forget what that experience was like. They were touring around promoting the upcoming series. Thanks for your reactions to this incredible series. I appreciate men like yourself who truly appreciate what this series teaches us. It makes me reflect on my time, even though I have been retired for nearly 20 years now. I never forget the men I served with. Keep the faith and the reactions coming. Excellent.

When I first seen this documentary many years ago I broke down when Babe said, “he took a shot for you” because you realize that these men “took a shot” for all of us. We owe them a debt that we cannot hope to repay but we start by keeping them in our memory and teaching our children the history and sacrifice of this generation.

Yes, you can actually still hike the Curahee mountain site. Unfortunately it has been the victim of a lot of graffiti and people dumping garbage. Clearly not knowing or not caring about the significance of the site. There is a great KZfaq channel called “The History Underground”. Great historical channel that goes in depth and actually visits Curahee as well as many other locations of the events in the band of brothers series. I highly recommend it now that you’re so familiar with the band of brothers series.

JD also organised a great effort to remove that graffiti and install surveillance cameras. It was hugely successful, but in all honesty, I've not returned to see if the park and its cameras have kept the vandals away. Hopefully, this historical site is still graffiti-free.

I thoroughly enjoyed your reactions on this series. And additionally, to see a Brit react to this, is just wonderful. I agree that this is must-see viewing and should be part of history classes in school for younger generations. I plan on showing this to my son, when he’s old enough. And also I must say, as an American, I felt the same amount of pride and patriotism watching Dunkirk as I did watching Band of Brothers. It’s an interesting thing, feeling that overwhelming pride for another country.

So grateful that you included the mention of Mike Ranney at the end; some reactors even seem to leave with the impression that Winters is talking about himself. He was the Sergeant that was demoted to Private after the mutiny to remove Sobel; won a medal at Brecourt, but doesn't feature after that, so it always reminds me of the ones who served beside the ones we come to know by name by the end of the series. kerk

They have recently rebuilt Camp Toccoa and you can hire out barracks made from the original wood and windows and stay overnight. And yes, you can climb or run Currahee. If you check out The History Underground channel, he has a series where he visits the places where Easy Company trained and fought. He trekked up Currahee and at the top he discovered all the rocks covered in graffiti and left to ruin. He started a campaign to clean it all up and has a video of them cleaning and restoring it. He has some great videos that follow Easy from Camp Toccoa to Normandy and Bastogne. He also recently did an excellent series on Normandy with countless amazing stories from the invasion including BoB content. It’s worth checking out if you haven’t already.

Definitely have a read of Webster's book, it's so good. It's called Parachute Infantry and is a really ground-level view of the war and he has such an interesting perspective on it all. As he said in the series, he jumped into Normandy on D-Day, fought in France and Holland and into Germany.

There was a 20 year anniversary symposium of Band of Brothers a few weeks ago (delayed due to Covid) and videos of it are on KZfaq. It includes some of the producers, writers, actors and children of the Vets talking about how the series was created, how the actors got their parts, stories about the Vets, etc. Probably about 5 hours of fascinating stuff for Band of Brothers fans. Just search for Band of Brothers Symposium. The most interesting thing for me was that the producers realised at the the start of the project how important Winters still was to the Vets and to the success of the series, so they had to earn Winters' trust. If they contacted a Vet for an interview the first thing the Vet would do was contact Winters and ask "Should I talk to these people".

It's surreal to watch this more currently than when it aired in 2001 because you watch the show, worried about them and wanting them to come home. Then you see them talking and there is a relief that they made it back & how real they truly become as people not just characters in a show. Then to get hit with the sadness of knowing now they have all passed.

It breaks my heart that the men who fought in Vietnam did not get welcomed home like other veterans who were just doing their duty. I recently saw a Vietnam veteran approached in a supermarket by a tiktoker and asked where he served and which war. The young man was told where and which company and he said am sorry you didn't get welcomed home but I would like to thank you for your service sir and the poor man broke down in tears , it was like he had waited his whole life for those words. It truly broke my heart and am in tears thinking about it now. Tho your father did not go to war tell him thank you from me for doing his duty.

While they were preparing to do the series the actors were given the phone numbers of their characters if they were still around. Almost to a man they didn't want to talk about their war. Instead it was "Let me tell you about the day Buck Compton did this" or "I remember Babe saying that." They quickly learned that if you wanted to know something about Bill, forget about talking to Bill, you asked Babe. If you wanted to know about Compton you didn't ask him you asked Malarkey or Bull. Most of those who played the then living Brothers became incredibly close to those they played. Grace Nixon practically adopted Ron Livingstone and his family. So did many of the others.

I recently heard that the brothers that the film Saving Private Ryan was based on, were actually really good friends with 'Skip' Muck. They were with him when he swam across the Niagra River, all be it several miles up from the falls! Lol. For me, it just cemented the relationship between the real men that these epic proctions were based on.

Your reactions to this series have been outstanding. You mentioned that you want to read some books on the airborne. I highly recommend reading four books written by a man named Don Burgett about his experiences serving in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne Division only instead of Easy Company 2nd battalion he was in Able Company 1st battalion. His books 'Currahee' 'Road to Arnhem' 'Seven Roads to Hell' and 'Beyond the Rhine' are fantastic books that put you inside his head and give you an understanding that a TV show never could. I also highly recommend watching 'The Pacific' and after you watch that there's a couple of excellent books that are relevant to that series that you would thoroughly enjoy reading as well. Actually one of those books is a must read but I don't want to mention the book or the author because it could be a spoiler for 'The Pacific'

I absolutely love the series, and this documentary where we get to see the guys tell their own stories. All of the stories resonated with me, but the one that always gets me is Alley nonchalantly going "I fell across powerlines and hit a fence, got cut up by glass but I got down", then having 32 holes from being hit by shrapnel from a bomb (this is shown in Ep 5 when he's carried into the barn covered in blood).

Hi Sofa and Chill, keep looking because buried inside KZfaq are bits and pieces of interviews and reunions of the men of 506th P.I.R. I recall one of " Shifty " Powers in his front yard. I recall a reunion of men of Easy Company and the actors of " Band of Brothers " I believe the video clip of Guarnere and Hefron in P.I.R. uniforms was from that reunion. I'm glad their history was preserved. Winter's book was a good read as well. I left my copy at a nearby library. ( bring a book-take a book ). I was on the road and had no room to carry books.

As a 20 year veteran of the US NAVY (retired in 2012), I love the series and others that do it right depicting veterans in all aspects of service. So I will comment on my thoughts on some of the major points in this series and how I took them. Before I do that I have a question for you and I hope in the way I ask this you take it the right way, I mean no disrespect if it is taken that way please right it off as I did not explain it properly. My point is you and others never really express in these reaction videos. As you did not really express this question I will ask you now. As a man of the United Kingdom/England What are your thoughts about the United States entering WWII? When you were in school what were you taught about WWII? For me I remember listening to 1940's actual audio recordings of news and actual combat recordings when I was in Middle School at age 12 and was facinated by the sound of war. In school I remember being taught about the Battle of Brittan and the Bombings of London in 1940. Now I know before the United States entered the WWII the political stance was we did not want to enter the war even if many people wanted to participate and defeat the Axis forces. So for me the Lend Lease program and shipping to Allied Forces supplies in a way to support efforts in the war has meaning. I have always wondered what people from England think about today when it comes to the US entering the war when we did. I guess for me I would be thinking that the United States entering the war saved many lives and I guess I would considder the bond between England and the United States to be as brothers for life. I would really appreciate it if you could reply your feelings about the idea of what I just wrote about as an Englishman. Lastly I would love to see the English version of Band of Brothers.

Prof.Timothy Snyder, Historian, had to sum up Hitler's 'philosophy' in a minute or so and he said "He had an ecological view of the world, a vision of the way life should be that was extremely radical. He saw life as a struggle of races, a struggle for land and food and the only legitimate emotions were racial solidarity, fear and envy. Any other feelings or emotions or universal ethic like love your brother as yourself was a Jewish supernatural invention, any notion of the good comes from the Jews and we will only return to our true nature when the Jews have been removed" That dogma was allowed to be sown, planted and encouraged and grew into the horror we witnessed in Chapter 9 'Why we fight' and was responsible for 50 million deaths, 6 million Jews murdered and the establishment of 42 500 camps, ghettoes, death camps etc. all over Europe and the Baltic States. You could fit that area of land into the USA twice, the USA has about 40 000 McDonalds just to highlight how intense was the Hell on Earth that Hitler created and how every one of those deaths is down to the evil thoughts and actions of one man. Someone blogged recently "When I get tired, as I am at this moment, I remember the words of the late Congressman, Hungarian-born Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor ever elected to Congress: “The veneer of civilization is paper thin. We are its guardians, and we can never rest.” - Thank you.
