Summiting the highest peak in all of Oklahoma is no laughing matter. This trip was filled with a roller coaster of emotions ranging from terror to joy; anger and excitement. Few people have ever summited Black Mesa in northwestern Oklahoma and for good reason. We are here to tell the tale.
We weren't sure what to expect after planning on this trek for the last 14 hours but it was truly an experience. Black Mesa juts out of the earth at a sky piercing 60 stories. The approach to this peak requires passage of the infamous 'Panhandle Pass' passing through small villages such as 'Slapout' and 'Hooker'. Just the approach is enough to turn the average man back to where he came from.

I have lived in Oklahoma all my life, but I have never hiked Black Mesa. I've been thinking about conquering that terrain, but after watching your video I am filled with fear and anxiety. I am glad you made it down without succumbing to frostbite, high-altitude pulmonary edema, or those predacious cows. Awesome video!

I remember I saw a video of this mountain before, it was really weird because I swear I saw a crowbar ornately positioned by the peak of it.

This hiker from Colorado was rooting for you two champs the whole time! Nothing like getting on top of a big boy (prairie) like that? Did you do some serious video editing or something? I didn’t see any snow or pika. You know I’m still gonna try it though

I laughed! Our day on Black Mesa actually was a bit of a challenge. There was a cold rain pretty much the whole time on the trail and temps in the 40s made for a miserable and long slog. Cheers!

You know, if you get between a cow and her young, she might glower at you. Better safe than sorry. Thanks for all the DIY videos. They actually make a lot of sense. I would like to see how it ended up. Your DIY videos actually are a tribute to just doing everything one step at a time until you get there, so it's kind of the same message. This is more fun. I'm glad you seem pretty happy about the whole thing. Thanks.

The climbing scene with the foot and hand holds that are about to crumble at any point killed me! Well done! What other High Points have you done?
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 7 жыл бұрын
Haha, right! :D lol That's my favorite part too! Now that I'm thinking about it, that's actually probably the only high point we have done. That's not something that we typically seek out. We've been up several of the 14,000ft peaks in Colorado, but we haven't been up Elbert (the highest one)
@weseehere4837
@weseehere4837 7 жыл бұрын
That is a very unique first high point! That's cool you've done a lot of 14ers in Colorado. Any you would say are must do's? Elbert is on my list, but I have yet to do a hike in Colorado. Definitely need to get there.
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 7 жыл бұрын
Definitely unique, and we didn't even realize that was our first one. lol We have only done a few of the 14ers, but if I were to recommend an area for that, it would be in the "Colony Lakes" area just outside of Walsenburg Colorado. The Colony Lakes basin sits in the bowl between the 14ers, Humboldt, Kit Carson, Challenger, Crestone peak and the incredible face of the Crestone Needle. Once you are in the basin, there is a variety of difficulty levels. All the way from just a hike (humboldt) to technical climbing required (Ellingwood Erete up the Crestone Needle). Even if you don't summit anything, that area is, dare I say, the prettiest place I've ever been.
@weseehere4837
@weseehere4837 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Google Earth! This looks amazing. I've never looked into that corner of Colorado. I've always looked around Elbert or Rocky Mountain National park. It looks like you get a superb view from Humboldt Peak. And the Crestone Needle remindes me of Mount Whitney! I feel the need for a backpacking trip! I have the list of High Points on my computer, but I too have only done one so far. Thank you for the recomendation!
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 7 жыл бұрын
No Problem! Yeah, that area is crazy pretty and way less crowded than RMNP. A good way to see that area would be to camp at the colony lakes then you could pick and choose which ones you wanted to ascend.

When my time comes, my final wish is to have my ashes taken to that summit and then at sunset, toss them over the ledge into the abyss; only to be swept away by the breeze like chaff, so to fulfill my final testament of giving back all that nature has given me.
