Northern Scot here, Prestone is awesome, when used correctly. It’s not for melting snow, it’s for turning ice to water in front of your eyes. Honestly this was one of the best videos you guys have ever made, simply because it’s obvious the only snow you see on the regular is on the Coca Cola Christmas advert 😂
@joshuaford4460
@joshuaford4460 2 ай бұрын
Agreed, got a prestone can on clearance 3 years ago by chance and ive never looked back, clear the snow off with a brush first and then spray a couple horizontal lines across the top of each window, let gravity work it through the ice. The narrow spray gives it the reach to cover the whole windshield from one side of the car. They definitely missed the mark on that one and should give it another shot if they have the chance

Northern swede here. There are some things i want to point out: - Dont.......floor it. You want to go easy. The moment you speed up youre just making ice. This is why entries to roads are usually alot more slippery than other parts. - Use pendulum momentum. If youre that deep with no trailer then you can pump the gas to "hump" the car forward. - Wiggle the front wheels. Differentiating wheel direction will help alot. - ice melter. Well youre testing it on new fluffy snow, not under cooled rain or heavy icing. If you want to de-ice windows just mix some alcohol base or more windshield cleaner in your windshield wiper solution. Should be used on key holes since those are some ***** ***** ****** sometimes. My suggestions if you want to drive in snowy places: - Get REAL snow tires. Dont go slippin-and-slidin on highways or down hills. We be hatin you for that. - Get a long scraper with a brush. Fantastic for removing snow and ice especially in the middle of the window. - Go slow. If you have no or little experience with driving in these conditions, dont rush it. This is even more relevant on entries to roads and in slopes. - Check the weather before driving. If there is below zero degrees rain or a snow storm and you arent used to driving in those conditions, dont. - If you are really, really, really stuck somewhere out in the outback, break a few branches of a fir or pine tree, preferably in a broom shape so you get the thinner parts with the needles and the thicker branch holding it all together, and place in front of the tire and SLOWLY move forward. This shouldnt be your go to as you shouldnt break of branches willy nilly, but it can help you get the traction you need to get out of that situation.

The most expensive ones I could find online, those fancy quick install jobbies for huge 4x4 pickup tires, were $400. I bought a set of cable chains for my Toyota sedan at a thrift store for $3, they work fine. Then he said you can't drive on the road with the socks, that was more B.S.

Yeah, Finland here, hi. De-icer spray is only product that makes sense out of these if you don't have heated windshield. But like a good one, not that kind you had. You only need basic ice scraper, small metal shovel and snow brush. Shovel is for if you get stuck you can try to shovel yourself out. Small lidded bucket of gravel is also good idea for winter to get some traction if you get stuck. And common sense not to drive anywhere you'd beach yourself. That's literally only things you need. We get temperatures below -30*C (-22*F) and a lot of snow here and I've never been so stuck I couldn't get my self out by my self.

I still own a Saab, but when I lived in the northeast I had them as well. Those guys really cared about winter driving; headlight wipers to clear mud and snow from the headlights, a super hot heater, heated leather seats, and maybe the best part; the door handles were metal and designed to not freeze up in icy conditions with a loop big enough to fit your hand in WHILE wearing a glove. The buttons inside the car were a little large as well, and according to Saab it was so you could use any of the car's features with your gloves on. The only thing it was missing was a heated steering wheel and MAYBE 4 wheel drive. If you had good snow tires and drove carefully though that wasn't a problem on main roads... still though those cars felt at home in the snow, especially for 90s vehicles.

Also, the goal of the prestone spray is to get underneath the ice, you spray at the top and wait for it to break the ice from the car, it peels right off. It's not meant to melt the whole thing, that's why it sprays in a heavy stream.

I do have one of those electric ice scratchers from Kärcher and I must honestly say it's the best car accessory I ever had. No idea what kind of battery is in there but I maybe have to charge it like 3 times a winter so that's superb. The ice removing capability is insanely good with a surprisingly high amount of torque so getting even through think ice is a A LOT easier than doing it by hand... Not super easy of course but you have to work a lot less than with a manual one and I don't get all sweaty which is a huge plus for me. Just keep in mind that it does cause micro scratches on the glass. My little shitbox isn't as precious anymore as it used to be so it doesn't matter a lot but I wouldn't do it on a S class...

The first thing you do is turn the traction control off. If all the wheels are slipping, nothing moves. "I got my foot to the floor right now." Then you do the rocking, back and forth, turn the wheels, have the tires spin and dig type of techniques. I've never been stuck for long.

Those tractions boards would definitely work if you had maybe like six of them. just set up a track for each tire and then move the car slowly and grab the last boards to move them to the front again. It would be slow but could work

As someone from Northern Minnesota the De-icer spray actually is amazing to have. There are generic ones for a lot less money that do just as good of a job too. Much more intended to work in ultra-cold dry winters. Works really good on doors and locks as well For getting unstuck I would just carry a mini-shovel and kitty-litter/sand. That will work in nearly every situation, and if it doesnt then throw your floor-mats under the wheels as well

For door handles, and for iced up windshields/mirrors, there is a super cheap way to clear them. Take 2 parts Isopropyl Alcohol and 1 part distilled water. Mix in a spray bottle and viola, you're good to go. I live near Aspen, so it's not thenworst for snow and ice, but it does get bad at times and this solution has saved the 27 year old door handles on my 96 pathfinder

On the Prestone. They make a spray bottle with a wide/narrow twisty nozzle. I can attest it helps a lot in making the ice softer for easier removal

Cheaper options for Wind screen use a blanket . For the side windows use sandwich bags or garbage bags. A medium power leaf blower works for clearing snow. For ice on a Window pour warm water in a bag and run it along glass surfaces while wiping with a cloth to prevent refreezing. I suggest using Rain x Water repellent before snow because it will help prevent thick ice from forming.

A couple of scrap pieces of carpet aren't a bad choice for a little extra grip. A shovel and some craps of carpet can be enough to save the day sometimes! I think if you're in a situation more than once where you're stuck pretty bad though... maybe it's time to consider different tires or altering your driving if you can lol. Taking a "mountain shortcut" in your all season tired corolla for example, bad idea if there's a main road that's not as steep and has winter maintenance...

As someone born and raised in the south, it's eye opening to see that this is a common and recurring issue for many of my fellow Americans in other states to the point that there is an entire industry for accessories that go on your car to combat snow and ice. Snow is so rare down here that it's a full-blown spectacle when it happens.

The de-icer does work when you use it properly, the clue is in the name. Once you've removed snow, de-icer is to melt layers of ice that are still attached to the car

15 smackers for a can of deicer?!? Honestly, the most used wintery products I use are the cheap scraper and a home filled spray bottle of deicer windshield fluid. I tried one of the frost-free windshield blankets and it not only froze to the windshield, but the tabs that were shut in the door jams froze in there. I got one out but had to cut the other so I could get to work on time. I'd like to see you guys' take on some jump packs/portable power packs.

Growing up in PA. Snow Joe scraper/broom, Shovel, (2) 20ib bags of kitty litter. That's all I ever keep in my vehicle for winter. Kitty litter is great for extra weight on wheels (i stick one above each wheel well), and for grip to get unstuck. If you don't use the litter, donate to animal shelter at end of winter.

Prestone Deicer: Scrape your windows. A layer of ice is stuck to the glass that won't come off without a lot of work. A quick spritz of deicer across the top of the window, while the car runs and the vents heat up. Drink cup of coffee indoors in comfort. Return to car, ice is clear, drive to work. A niche product, but useful in areas where you get a lot of freezing rain. Also, should not cost you more than $5 a can.

to get unstuck use a shovel and an air pump. Dig it out, and deflate the tires a little, when you get to clean road pump them up again. get rid of ice by throwing a gallon of tepid water on the car, around 140f (60c) is fine, and won't crack glass. These methods are all more effective than what you showed and a shovel + air pump + bucket is under $50. In winter I always travel with a shovel just in case.

My car was in the shop, so I once took the work van home in the winter. Bad mistake. A Chevy Savana Express with all-season tires is terrible on snow. Making it home on roads cleared and compacted by rush hour traffic was fine. The problem was getting into my parking stall at home. Took me half an hour to go 85 metres. Constantly got stuck and had to dig myself out. The next morning was about the same. Fortunately, I got my car back that day. 2006 Ford Focus with winter tires. There was literally only one time in the 11 years I owned that car that it got stuck.

The snow socks actually are amazing and you CAN use them on asphalt and up to 25 mph. They will of course wear out faster but I used them on pavement until I was well past the snow and took a few miles to find a spot to pull over. They had a few wear holes but even after machine washing they are good to go for a few more uses. Used them on a 1.2k mile road that was a 3,000 foot elevation drop and they performed amazing.

A question about those tracks on the Jeep....I'm Australian so very little knowledge of snow....I can see the track system adding so much stress on the drive train from transmission to transfer case tail shafts diffs axels and suspension components..long term use would have to cause some damage without strengthening the whole drive line of whatever vehicle you fit it too...hope in product development this is taken into consideration some vehicles have weak drive train compared to others....awesome video looks cold 🥶 while I'm enjoying our summer....

Prestone De-Icer rules, dude. It's not for snow, it's for thick ice. It's saved my life on many occasions, when the ice freezes so hard that it'll literally break a plastic scraper. Buy it in the non-aerosol spray bottle and it's a lot cheaper. I get about one a year.
