The issue of demonetisation has divided political and public opinion. Inside Parliament, there have been stormy scenes, and outside at ATMs and banks, there have been serpentine queues. There are stories of hardship and suffering, but some also say the pain is worth the gain. On We The People, we look at the politics and economics of demonetisation. What is its aim - hit at black money or digitise the economy? Will it net the big fish? Will Modi government's gamble pay off? We get you the stories of those who are struggling to cope with this move as well as of those who have adapted to the digital economy.

Do you really think private hospitals denying money because of note ban? It is because they want to black this money.They can take old notes and deposit them in their accounts who is stopping them?Hospitals and doctors are one of the biggest source of black money.

Implementation of the policy is bad, but the policy itself is worse. Only good thing about demonetization is that large amount of unclaimed black money will be an easy income for the government. So called policy of cashless economy can be a disaster for the bottom 45% people of the country. Cashless economy will make people less free. Economic activity will go down; more fees can be imposed for every bank transactions. This can bring depression. Until black money, used by the political parties and political leaders, are recovered majority of the population should not raise their hope for better life.

Cashless economy will benefit India as it has happened in many western developed economies. You'll be FREE as much as you're right now. Your argument sounds more like a stupid Illuminati-crazed netizen who has nothing to contribute towards the society but keeps on fantasizing/ranting about things that don't even exist. When banks go cashless, the transaction fess will automatically go down as result of more profit being generated from digital field and the banks will give priority to the cashless modes rather than investing in building huge infrastructures for the cash-based banking system. Is it that hard to grasp?

i don't understand why ndtv anchors are opposing a great move on curb of black money.....Majority of the people of this country and even outside people are overwhelming this step that has taken by indian government......for short inconvenience but long benefit for future of this country....... The main intention of this step to get back the black money and most important to link the people to Bank corporations......

Govt is worried about paying taxes, but the tax rate is very high compared to infrastructure, roads etc... They need to reduce the tax rate to 15% , while will encourage business to pay rate Increase interest rates and reduce capital tax rates, which will increase deposit gradually Digitizing should occur naturally, it should not be enforced Ultimately, the business increase prices if they had to pay more taxes and inflation increases

That german journalist was the dumbest of all, just wanted to say something stupid i guess, had her bias on her face. i found barkha(who is totally biased) more balanced in her views. madame germnan jounalist people dealing in black money don't trade in plastic money cz then It comes in the books. when dealing with such issues, atleast make basic sense. sure this does not completely eradicate the black money which is not in the form of cash, but due to the drying up of liquidity, black money flow is also hammpered which gives the tax authority sufficient time for crackdown. In addition, this puts a break to the counterfeit industry, arms trading and black political funding. It also recapitalises banks which in turn makes credit cheaper thus helping the common man and it also lowers the inflation. government earns enough money for an engineered economic stimulus and other social welfare programmes which leads to job creation and lastly a boom to the flagging IT sector. its definately worth the pain. and vijay mallaya's case is of willfull default and not black money, so don't confuse it just for the sake of rhetoric.

Yeah, amazing! The German woman, with a jackal-like smile, says how she gamed the system by going again and again(with the help of someone who, maybe because of her white skin, was willing to do favors) and withdrawing Rs.7500 in 100 notes, and then says how Modi's govt is radical and that demonetization will not work! She should be thrown into jail for cheating India.

@ Mayank, you should be really NOT talking about sense. Ok let's see, if you see any logic in what I say. I'm NOT looking at symptomatic things ( pluses or minuses in execution OR individual people caught or escaped) .. please read in a cool mind and reply : 1) BJP and many other political parties get over 80% funding through cash and black money. Our PM is a result of the same cash and black money > HE MAKES MINDLESS POLICIES ( I know idiots can me anti-national if we even be subjective critic, while they feel nationalists while using abusive language on all others, pls note: I'm only mentioning about idiots not the logical ones) 2) ALL IT officials aren't saints, you can find many corrupt within them. THESE PEOPLE THREATEN COMMON PEOPLE FOR DEPOSITING THEIR OWN MONEY. 3) Black Money is within political party leaders, smugglers, drug traffickers, terrorists and others involved in Black businesses .. who stack it in offshore accounts AND IT Dept and Home dept have enough information about this. THEY NEVER CRACK THEM. WHY?? BOTTOM-LINE; THIEVES IN 1) AND 2) JOIN TOGETHER TO THREATEN COMMON PEOPLE WHILST KNOWING ABOUT 3) AND CALL THEMSELVES IDEALISTS AND NATIONALISTS! WHAT A BLOODY JOKE! NATIONAL MOCKERY!!

It clearly shows BD is sold. She tried to scuttle and cut statements made by people who showed support while running and encouraging people who were against the move. It is also sad that the so called learned Prof. Jayati is ill informed on Modiji's statement when she questions about the big fish going scot free. Did she not hear him say, " yeh toh sirf shuruaat hai"??? And while it is sad that the gentleman lost his child, it is a shame he is blaming the implementation. While he and his loyal and learned (advocate) brother, BOTH have a CC, what prompted them both to leave it at home and only carry the notes which they know are demonetized and will not work? And then blame Modiji and his implementation?

That german woman's points debunked: 1) Firstly, she states she's a german journalist. I find it very odd that everyone said their name, except her. With the sound of her accent, she is German, but I have no idea what her name is or what credentials she actually has. She makes a lot of statements without backing them up. It annoys me when an individual that knows absolutely nothing about our country voices an opinion about an issue she knows nothing about. Then she turns it into a "radical debate". This is nonsense. 2) She states that she has a foreign bank account which she withdrew 7500 rupees in 100 notes. The point of implementing the operation was not to curb money coming out of foreign bank accounts. It was to demonetize stockpiles of cash in India and remove them from circulation. As you claim to be a journalist, if you any reading whatsoever, you should at the very least know that. 3) She states that it won't stop black money or curb corruption. Does she even understand what black money is? Black money is undeclared income. At this point so far, >500,000 crores of rupees have been deposited into banks. The central government receives income taxes from only 1.6-3% of the population. If development is the primary goal of this government, then more of India's income has to be declared. If the country wants to make a shift towards towards digital India, more of population need to be shifting towards the banking sector. 4) She said it won't curb terrorism? Are you kidding me? The 500 and 1000 rupee note have been replicated to perfection by terrorists across the border. This is because both Pakistan and India both utilize of the identical paper material for cash making it easy to replicate. 5) The majority of rich people in India earn through the banking system. If they have currency in foreign accounts or gold that's good for them. But many are also hoarding cash in 500 and 1000 rupee notes. 6) "Radical politics by a radical party?" What does this have anything to do with the debate on demonetization. Those are some seriously offensive words. It is unbelievable that Barkha just stood there and said "those are some strong words".
@biswarup077
@biswarup077 7 жыл бұрын
AlwaysC0caC0la it won't curb terrorism. Already we have terrorist attacks happening...it may create a temporary problem for them but they can exchange them with the rackets that is going on. the cash is only 5% of black economy ... rest are kept in gold diamond property etc. it's fools like you who believes they hoard black money in cash...she rightly says bjp is a radical party...hindu radical party..she is right to compare modi with trump...Also this move is going to devastate the economy...
@AlwaysC0caC0la
@AlwaysC0caC0la 7 жыл бұрын
1) Yes, I agree it won't stop entirely, however it definitely will slow it down. It is unlikely that the ISI funds militants directly. It is more likely that that the Pakistani government and ISI turn a blind eye when it comes to India, and play a role in which they abet and encourage violence along the Indian border. Like all things terrorism requires money. a) The heroin/opium trade (from Afghanistan->Pakistan->Kashmir/Punjab) plays an important role in funding terrorism across the border. The majority of those cash exchanges are in 500/1000 rupee notes on India's side. And like you mentioned they will switch to the new 500/2000 rupee notes sooner or later. However, it will take a long time for them to accumulate that sort of wealth in order for you to fund groups. b) Secondly, and more importantly, the counterfeiting of the 500/1000 rupee notes probably plays the predominant role. Terrorism is a cash based operation. It's hard to make huge transactions without it catching sight. The CIA, RAW, etc. are there for a reason. 2) The problem with figures regarding India's black market is that, "we don't know". Lets take your word for it, and say that the black economy is 5%. That is still A LOT of unaccounted wealth. It's easy to throw around numbers when they think that's low. India's GDP at the moment is upwards of 2.1 trillion USD. A 5% black market, is upwards of $100 billion USD. 3) If 3% of India pays income tax, then the government is going to have a difficult time developing the country. Until and unless there is at least a major shift towards a cashless economy. Even if this move enables the top 20% of the population to start paying income tax, it will do wonders for future development. The majority of development in India at the moment is based one public private partnership as Nitin Gadkari mentions. You can complain all you want, but nothing in the country gets done without tax. It's just the reality of things. India needs a kick in the right direction. 4) People keep throwing around this word, "devastate" or "collapse". Yes obviously there are going to be some level of consequences, and you can certainly complain how disorganized the move was, but it's not going to "devastate" the economy. Those are words for people like Mamata, and Kejriwal would say. Manmohan Singh predicts a drop in 2% points in GDP. In his final years of office, the GDP dropped a whopping 5%. In a large complicated democracy like India, even if 1 billion people agree, 100-200 million people will disagree. 5) The BJP is a right of centre party, not a radical hindu party. Shiv Sena is a radical hindu party, and engage in far right politics. However, they have limited power at the moment, as the CM of Maharashtra is from the BJP. Conservative doesn't equate to being radical. Trump openly speaks in public about Radical Islamic Terror, and takes it way too far. I've never heard Mr. Modi speak that way in public. Mr. Modi only speaks of national unity, and has a nation first attitude. You're foolish to think that there is something radical about saying that.
@biswarup077

1) If you are watching news terrorism is going on unabated...and huge stock of 2000 Rs note has already reached them. Fake currency and illegal activities at best will have temporary slow down and for that people are being treated like cattle and forced to stand in queues with all the consequences.. All the impact is on poor people that's why people like you are so enthusiastic about it because for you it has caused only minor inconvenience. 2) Black economy is not 5%. The component of cash in black economy is 5%. The 95% of assets in black economy is not touched and nobody or very few gets punished And also you are not ending future generation of black money either .And for this very limited gain you have forced whole India stand in line (except elites and upper middle class with plastic money ) starved them of their genuine money with all the consequences. Its a horrendous decision only a gimmick loving jumlabaz gov. can take. 3) I agree on this point but to increase tax first we need to end the various sops being given to corporate. India is having one of the least tax to GDP ratio in the world.. This decision by itself is not going to increase the tax net. and if you think this is going to make india cashless you are living in utopia. In this country people do not have fecility for proper drinking water and electricity and you selling them dreams of internet , smartphones and online banking....First provide them universal education and healthcare then talk about all these digital/ technological utopia... 4) It is going to have devastating effect. Effect on GDP does not matter. Already SMEs and agriculture and retail trade is hit which employ 80% of people. The devastation can not be guessed just by looking at cold statistical figures. If you care look at various news channel about the impact of this horrendous decision 5) You have never heard Modi speaking like Trump. Just see Gujarat riot files and scrutinise his role from his early career to as CM of Gujarat. And also research on BJP's rise as a national party from 1980s. Their activities were as bad as Shivsena and they can be qualified as hindu radical party if their entire history is taken into account.

1) The last terror strike is the Uri Attack. After the Surgical Strikes, the exchanges have been exchanges between the two military forces and militant groups across the LOC. 2) You said that "huge stocks of notes have reached them?" If you can find a reasonably credible source citing "huge stocks of notes", I would love to see it. 3) Yes people are standing in queues and it sucks, but the country has to start somewhere. India will never move forward if we keep looking backwards. My goal isn't a cashless utopia, that would be absurd. But India is overly reliant on a cash 4) I took that 5% as an example. In no way can we quantify how much there is. Find me a credible source stating 5% of black money is in cash. 5) You said "you are not ending future generations of black money". Do you even understand what black money is? Electronic banking means less black money because an individuals wealth is accounted. 6) Yes rich and upper middle class people use electronic banking. They put their wealth in banks, investments, stocks, etc.. This wealth is accounted for and TAXED. Which is why they can use debit/credit cards, hence don't have to stand in line. That's why they don't have to stand in line. So please don't turn this into a rich or poor argument. 7) My goal isn't a cashless utopia, that would be absurd, but India is heavily reliant on cash, and requires a push in the right direction. If we don't move in the right direction, then these scandals and scams will continue. This needs to change. 8) Yes, of course you're right people do need access to drinking water, electricity, and proper facilities. That's an obvious point, and the government several initiatives on that as well. I doubt I need to list those out to you. 9) People are smarter than you think, if you give them the right tools. Just because a person is poor doesn't mean they're stupid. Anyone can learn so long as they have the will to do so. 60 Years of neglect and 600,000 crores of scandals by the UPA regime left this country poor. 10) I've taken a close look at all the Gujarat riot files, and you are completely mistaken. You should Read Andy Marino's book: "Narendra Modi, A Political Biography", which is much more balanced regarding the issue. Don't assume that the Supreme Court of India is stupid. Respect the decision. 11) You speak of communalism in the 1980's, and fail to mention the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, and how that started. If I'm not mistaken it was several leaders from the Congress party that fueled it. Not everything is black and white. The INC, in the past, has adopted secularism as well as hindu nationalism whenever it favours them to do so.

1) & 2) There may not be large attack but there is low key activities continuing...Just see the daring Punjab jail break....The note ban is supposed to put a break on these activities but right after 20 days we see this daring acts by criminals/terrorists. This is the time when note ban is suppose to have broken the terror network and they had achieved this...imagine what happens after 2 months or 6 months....They will be right back with their exchanged notes. Here are some of the sources in support of my comment indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/nabha-jailbreak-gunmen-break-into-high-security-punjab-jail-help-khalistan-militant-five-others-escape-4398862/ indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/chhattisgarh-jharkhand-police-fear-misuse-of-jan-dhan-accounts-by-maoists-4385212/ www.voanews.com/a/rebels-soldier-killed-in-kashmir-fighting/3611190.html www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/bsf-jawan-injured-as-militants-ambush-convoy-in-kashmir-s-kupwara-district/story-4osd903sNqTS4TuL1oF1nO.html www.thehindu.com/news/national/telangana/Maoist-sympathisers-held-while-trying-to-exchange-banned-notes/article16684229.ece 3) "People are standing in queue" is gross understatement. People are losing jobs, Small Business, farmers, traders are facing loss, People are dying because they are unable to pay in hospitals, they are going hungry. This is economic holocaust...Please do not underestimate or sugarcoat the sufferings. And India is not over reliant on cash. Compared to all major economies it is not over reliant on cash. And cash is not evil, it is the life blood of the economy in a country like India where we are far away from universal digital infrastructure. 5) You are contradicting yourself. You agree that cashless economy is a utopia on the other hand you seems to be very enthusiastic about supposed benefit of electronic banking in curbing black money. Please explain if cash is impossible to be extinguished as you also agreed, what is stopping people from using cash for illegal transactions. Another brain teaser for you. Technology do not act one sided. Technological development also leading to digital crypto-currencies like bitcoin which can be used for illegal transactions as they can not be tracked. 6) This is definitely a rich poor argument...Poor are disproportionately affected by this note ban. Rich and upper middle classes are having free ride as they do not have to stand in line(It would have been different matter if electronic transactions also would have been stopped.) and they are most vocal about Modi's policies as they are least affected by these policies and they will be the one to benefit from his corporate friendly policies. 7) This is another utopia that going cashless will curb scam and corruption. Nobody is getting jailed or punished. At most they have to pay high tax on their ill gotten money. When they know they do not have to face harsh punishment they will continue with their scams fearlessly. They will move to gold, diamond and bitcoins.They would move their money into tax heavens like panama and Bermuda and Mauritius. May be some petty black money holders will be destroyed after this huge sacrifice by the poor but rich and powerful will continue with their fun. This is not at all going in any direction. 8) & 9) this gov. is the most pro corporate and anti poor gov since 1991.. They have slashed all allocations in social sectors and you are talking about various measures. First give people basic education so that they can go up the value chain in the economic activities. Do not create hollow dream that without huge investment in social sectors the evils like illiteracy and ill health will vanish and poor will zoom into the techno utopia of digital India. By the way India is among the lowest in Human Development index.

Barkha keeps repeating there is a child who could have been born and blames it on the policy. Wonder how many such sacrifices our forefathers made to make the country free seven decades ago. There could be similar emotive narratives when Gandhi called for the civil disobedience movement and similar inconveniences probably to the common man. Does that mean that the call for Independence was necessarily bad? India needs to free itself of the Black economy.

We speak about digital economy, if we get in a city bus (specially Govt city bus) how we pay to collect tickets ? by cash or Credit card ???? think how much India is ready for Digital Economy...

Modi is excellent, but his officers lack intelligence. 1. Exchange of old money to new must stop; the people must deposit their old money in their bank or post offices. 2. All post offices should be converted into banks like Postal Banks in Japan. 3. Everyone must have either post office or bank accounts just like Adhar cards. 4. All post office and banks must issue debit cards and cheque books with cheque guarantee cards to all deposit holders. 5. In that case there is no need to have currency notes. 6. People can withdraw what they like, but they will have 6 months to deposit their old currency notes. These will need more recruitment in banks and post offices...good for the young people. All money will be accounted for and the income tax revenues will be huge.

The lawyer said they admitted the mother near by hospital where she go normally for check-up. If it is near, how much time it will take to go and get the credit/debit card from home? I hope you will realise soon that country(job/duty) is more important than your posts(party/channel).. Perhaps they don't teach you this in your madrasa, but in such emergency normal people ususally have many means to pay for - firstly, ther something called "health insurance"? Then, there is this option to go and alk to this person called the "bank manager" to perpare a something called a "demand draft" to pay at the hospital, perhaps? Under which stone have you been living to expect to withdraw huge amounts of hard cash to pay for such expenses?

Political will and honesty is important bcoz the daily wagers is paid and is there is a raseed receipt and is it listed that they pay the taxes, there is a need to digitalise the system. Think about the transport system can rekshaw Wala give receipt and truck walas who don't knows how the economic system works. Can they provide receipt for the service they done. How a truck Wala who earned a few laks and how he can show his taxes how other bus walas taxi walas private sector transportation can show their taxes. So they clearly targeted the vendors and pedlars and need to first educate them and then implement. The big buffalo will go trough it and it will effect the lower income or lower middle class or lower class.
