🎥 IG:@capt_louie - Last week on Monday we spotted probably one of the strangest things I've ever seen on the water. This absolutely enormous Tiger Shark was floating belly up. After the third pass we circled around it she woke up and swam off. I have absolutely no idea what was wrong with it, the belly seemed inflamed and I don't know if she ate something or was pregnant. Any ideas.... I've heard a couple theories from guides and anglers I've showed it to but would love to know if anyone has witnessed something similar.

Sharks float upside down called tonic immobility, a trance-like state causes temporary reflex of inactivity, very rare. It can remain in this state for 15 minutes before it corrects itself, swims away.

The shark was in a state of tonic immobility. When Sharks end up upside down they go into a state of rest. It's a weird phenomenon but it happens. This is how orcas overcome sharks to feed on them. They role them onto their backs.

I mean its one of their tactics . In the majority of cases they just rum them with their 5 tonne body while travelling 60 kph. And sharks wouldnt even notice them until they are couple meters away. Echolocation is no joke

Tiger Sharks are the only Shark that will surface to gulp air to remain Buoyant in one spot to watch for prey, but in this case it rolled and went into Tonic Immobility

Yep. Upside down sharks go into a kind of catatonic state called tonic immobility. Still completely alive. And water was flowing over his gills with no problem he was just taking a "rest."

The tonic immobility is dangerous for sharks. Its usually not a big deal when the Sea has waves and streams, that forces water flowing in the Shark and eventually wakes them. But this time the water was so calm It could have died in that state

Nurse sharks are a little different they have a certain way that they can keep the water flowing over their gills and survive with less forward movement all the time. Otherwise sharks have got to keep swimming or they suffocate.

Likely caused by a killer whale. As pretty ad they are they're assholes and will flip sharks over and play with them for fun. They general do this before eating it but this guy was "lucky" sharks don't "rest" they have to constantly be swimming to breathe they even do it in their sleep. Now this is very obviously not all sharks but for tiger sharks, great whites, and whale sharks just to name a few it's true.

I was a scuba diver for the Oceanic Association. That seems to be a female pregnant shark. When sharks turn around they go into what is called a catatonic state because of how their muscles relax and their breathing becomes deep and rhythmic.

Be careful with the propeller dude, unless you know something’s dead you’re gonna end up hurting something that’s alive like you almost did here, the shark needed to be just a little bit more forward to have its face slashed up and then it could’ve been actually dead if the wounds were bad enough

I was basically born in a boat, but, I'm not a fisherman or a boat owner since our family moved away from the beach after I turned 11years old I was listening to the sound of his engine and I'm like, is this man really using a gas powered prop on tiny raft to get near a fat ass sea creature, let alone a shark....? Not only are you in danger, so is the animal.... wtf! I hate inconsiderate owners, of any theme... gun owner, boat owner, bike owner, etc. If they're bad, they make everyone else look bad and shouldn't get the privilege to do it... 😂 got way too close to chopping that tail....

sand tigers have one unique habit. They are the only sharks that come to the surface to gulp air, but not to breathe. The air ends up in its stomach. The air makes the shark more buoyant, so it can float motionless in the water as it watches for prey.

The tiger shark was inverted so it was in something called tonic immobilisation, also Tiger sharks have extremely sensitive organs so having an outboard motor running 2ft from his head is like putting our head next to a jet engine, so basically you woke up him up with very disturbing banging lol

It’s called tonic immobility. Occurs with all shark species when they are turned upside down they become highly relaxed and sometimes look asleep or dead.
