OK, when people say eat rice in Vietnam, in Vietnamese it literally translates to eat rice but they mean a whole meal. They say it for dinner as well

OMG Kathryn I had to laugh at myself when I tried to reach out for your food that was about to fall. Lol, I am so into the videos. I admire that you and Adam can turn negative experiences into positive ones. That is such a good attitude because, sometimes travels do not turn out as we expect them to. Enjoy Vietnam and thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I look forward to your next adventure.😄

I have lived in SE Asia for 35 years now, having emigrated from the UK in 1988... I have visited Vietnam many times, including spending a month there in 2019, and it is one of my favourite countries. And who cares about a few bugs? Comes with the territory in much of SE Asia!

This overnight train trip looks funny and interesting, haha. I always love to travel by train, especially for those which you can stay one or two nights in. Unlike those people who hate the train being slow, shaking and noisy, I just love this feeling on the other way. Becaue the "Shaking bed" makes me feel that I am still in my mom's hands, I can really sleep well no matter how loud or uncomfortable the train is.

Being a daughter of a 30-years-experiece train staff, I always like to travel by train despite it is slow, noisy and shaking. And I'm sorry to say you missed the best part which is a route from Danang to Hue where there is Hai Van Pass, the scenery is so so beautiful ( the last time I see Hai Van Pass was about 20 years ago when I travel from Hanoi to HCMC with my mom, and the memory of seeing it still remain in my mind). Last month I traveled from Hue to Danang by car so we went a tunnel ( Tunnel through Hai Van Pass) and there was nothing. If you have a chance please consider travel by train to see the view of Hai Van Pass ( or you can rent a motor bike from Danang to Hue, you'll get to see the pass too)

My wife and I did this exact train trip last October, in the same 2 bed room. Best nights sleep of our 1month Asian trip. We didn't realize the food was included and declined, not realizing. The bathroom was awful. My Dad was in a 4 bed a few rooms along the train making friends with locals lol. We will always remember it. Different experience to yours but fabulous memories.

What gorgeous scenery. We took 1 overnight train ride between Rome & Paris, and sprung for a sleeper car. Unfortunately, we went through the Alps overnight and missed out on the incredible scenery. Fortunately, we didn't sleep a wink and we saw parts of the Alps by moonlight. I believe there were two reasons why I didn't sleep. Our beds were east/west (perpendicular to tracks), and it would have been more restful to be north/south (over tracks). Also, there were a lot of altitude changes and tunnels, which caused our ears to pop. Looking forward to next week's adventure.
@AdventuresofAplusK

Oh wow! That sounds like an amazing ride and seeing the Alps by moonlight sounds beautiful! I'm interested to try to sleep on a train with north/south beds some time. These were east/west. Our ride was very flat, but I can see how altitude and tunnels would make it a challenge Thanks, Glenda!

Hello from Upstate NY, I am originally from the Mekong Delta south of Saigon and I am a wanderlust myself. I've been watching U2 since Covid year, always enjoy your show and all of your journeys!! It is common that you experience the bugs in Vietnam, I don't like them myself when I am home visiting family. Big part of Vietnam still is a third world country, but it is definitely much better since I left home in the late 70s....U2 are pretty cool travelers, take it all in and enjoy all the experiences.....hope the google translate will help.....looking forward to see your next moves!

I served at a navy base in Da Nang in 1970-71. Things look quite different there now! 😂Glad you had fun on the train. Vietnam is, as you know, very humid and tropical, so bugs will be common. I also saw a huge cockroach when I was stationed in Orlando, Flordia, in the navy in 1968. That critter was about 4 inches long and was skittering up a support post at an outdoor laundromat. I doubt Orlando has outdoor laundromats now. That was pre-Disney, when it was mostly a retirement community full of old people (like I am now) and their tons of dirty laundry (in more ways than one, probably!). Anyway, thanks for taking us on that ride. Fun to watch as always.

My thought as I saw the bloopers..."Whelp, Mr. Roach and his family will now feast for the next year on that!" Hahaha! Many people say you don't really take the train unless you're doing it for the experience. They suggest flying instead as the price is not that much more to fly and it'll be faster.

Hi A+K, This is Xia and Lou, back in Fresno, CA. It was a one in a trillion chance that we met you in Ninh Binh, at the granduer boat tour, on the other side of the planet! My video caught the scene of my wife Lou excitedly yelling her greetings to you at the shore! My sister in law didn't understand Lou's excitement, and thought Lou had seen a king or something. We were excitedly suprised to see you, greet you, hugs, take pictures and videos together. We also have a parting video of both of you riding your boat along ours. We will always cherrish Ninh Binh's beauty, serenity, grandeur, and your friendship souvenir...

It looks fantastic! I've only been on one train, the narrow gauge in Durango, and it went on for entirely too long. 17 hours would drive me nuts! But it's better than a plane, and probably much simpler than renting a car and driving across the country (though if you had no time restrictions that would be amazing). I don't know that I'll ever go out to SE Asia, though I've been told to visit the Philippines since that's where some of my family is from. I'm enjoying vicariously traveling through you though!

I spent a very interesting year in Viet Nam 52 years ago wearing jungle fatigues. The cities have really changed. The biggest buildings back then were the old French ones. The railroad generally wasn't running then because the VC and NVA would blow up bridges. The country side looks much the same. One good memory is bahn mi sandwiches in Hoi An from street vendors. The old part of Hoi An is very cool. There is an excellent museum in Da Nang of Cham (Champa) culture. If you can see it do so. IIRC it is between the downtown area and the air port and a block or two west of the river. The people back then were very friendly (except for the ones trying to kill me). The Da Nang area is lovely. There are some really pretty areas in the highlands. I had a very different experience in Viet Nam than a lot of GIs. The first half or my tour I was out in the bush as an Infantry Platoon Leader playing hide and seek with people who were trying to kill me and vice versa. The 2d half of my tour I was a Civil Affairs Officer in the Da Nang area which meant I was working with Vietnamese civilians doing disaster relief and things like taking medical teams out to remote hamlets. The 2d half was much more rewarding.

Hi, nice to meet you! I took the train from HCM to Hanoi, just over a month ago [early AM]. Probably too late now, but just behind that escalator in Saigon Station is a ticket booth, ....with a lady who speaks fluent English....she could have helped you with your already booked tickets!

It just a tiny cockroach, I live in the U.S and stay in some of the motels during the storm and they were huge cockroaches. We live in Louisiana and hurricane hits sometime one or two times a years.

1. Please try our couple bed on a bus for another transportation option. 2. Sry our trains still need to improve a lot compare to the West. They must offer great service and hospitality with the 2 beds option cause you paid 189$ OMGGGG (Vietnamese rarely use this option). The lunch missing for miscommunication is unacceptable! However, things sorted out. Hopefully you had some weird and fun experience. Enjoy your stay and truly appreciated for visiting VN! Have fun and stay safe!

The train is always a good idea....even when it isn't. LOL It goes places you probably never would have...and you don't have to drive. Nice save at the end Kathryn! How freaky was the "currency amounts" there in Vietnam? 300,000!!! And you find out it's $13. LOL So this roommate you guys had on the train....was it a Texas sized one? Haha.
@AdventuresofAplusK

The views from the train made up for any unwelcome friends and lack of sleep! We're still getting used to large numbers for such small amounts! The roommate was actually a Rhode Island size, very small, but any size is too big!

Wow that train needs some serious cleaning. But it still looked like a fun experience! Riding a sleeper train is on my bucketlist, but a higher quality, cleaner one in Japan I hope lol. I thought during the roach segment y'all found a bedbug! My biggest fear when traveling

As a Vietnamese, I suggest traveling such a distance (SGN-DAN) using airplanes. That's an obvious choice of Vietnameses here. We know that the train service in VN is not good, the train system and every parts of the service need upgrade and changes. We are not satisfied with its current state, but it is where it is now.

@@AdventuresofAplusK It's very nice to hear that. I also recognize a trend of visitors choosing train for traveling, and that's very appreciated. Unfortunately, our train system will not be improving anytime soon. Nonetheless, I hope you have a fantastic trip, and I look forward to meeting you in person one day.

Eeeek…a cockroach! At least it didn’t make its way to your mouths while you were sleeping! I know someone that happened to in their own house! 😳🤮 But seriously, this was a great video! We were laughing after that outtake with the food…Dad was really laughing! The scenery was gorgeous and your attitudes were great! Glad you got to experience this! Keep traveling safe!

I've heard things about this train and more often than not, it's not been great. I KNEW you guys were going to say you saw a cockroach before you said it... and I couldn't help but giggle over Kathryn jumping at the slightest noise thereafter. I know a lot of people take their own sheets... not that it would have helped with the cockroach. 12goAsia are amazing aren't they? We had no way to pre-book the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to the Laos border but they made booking through them and guaranteeing us a bed for the night a breeze. I didn't know it was possible to get a cabin with just 2 beds in it so this was very helpful to learn! Was it possible to fold away the beds to make seats for the day time or you have to keep the beds the way you had them in the video? On the last overnight sleeper train I took, they'd wrenched out all of the original train furniture and just put in 2 metal bunk beds that you'd find in a hostel dorm. I was so tired boarding the train around midnight I didn't realise until the next morning. Having had time to digest it - would you still recommend the train over flying?
@doodahgurlie
@doodahgurlie Жыл бұрын
Most Vietnamese people say don't take the train as they are not well maintained (flying is faster and often quite cheap). But many vloggers do it for the experience. So it depends on if you're doing it for the experience or not.
@AdventuresofAplusK
@AdventuresofAplusK Жыл бұрын
It was an interesting experience! The views out the window made up for any negative! We almost brought a sleeping bag liner for our trip, but decided against it at the last minute because of space and weight. 12goAsia was great! Very easy to use. No the beds were fixed as far as we know. We just sat on them during the day. We've taken a couple shorter trains since and they've gone smoothly. We wanted to do the train ride for the experience. We wouldn't do another overnight one in Vietnam just because flying is so much faster, easier and about the same price

Oh no, if you see one cockroach there's definitely a full on colony somewhere nearby 😬. I would've had to sleep with lights on, doesn't keep them all at bay but cuts down the amount that may come out usually 😬 ahhh I hate it 😂. Ya'll are brave to have that coffee after seeing bugs, but to be honest I get it I have to have coffee so I probably would've got some too! That meat cabbage and rice looks so good, I'm so glad you guys didn't miss out after all of that. I'm assuming Grab is like Uber/Lyft. Thank you guys for another great video!! Sending much love to you guys!
