We Traded our Campervan for a Cosy Cabin in the Alps
In this Switzerland travel vlog we swap winter vanlife in our tiny vw campervan for a cosy cabin in the Alps! After enjoying an action packed couple of weeks enjoying the Swiss snow, we decided it was a good time to slow things down and stretch our legs. We found the perfect cabin nestled in the mountains of southern Switzerland to spend a couple of nights. From the outside it looks like a standard traditional farmers cabin but with a surprising design inside, where it has been transformed to a 6 bedroom getaway with some of the best mountain views around!
After a couple of nights enjoying cabin life, we make our way back into the campervan and conclude as to which we prefer when it comes to enjoying winter in the Alps!

⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

That happened to me when we moved to New Orleans one year and I went out alone exploring in the southern area. I wound up on a one way road with backed up traffic and wound up on a ferry. I was too embarrassed to ask and wound up down in the fish camp and orange growing area and somehow found my way back. It was a great adventure 😂

You two need absolutely no help in coming up with fascinating stories to blog about! IMHO stay and enjoy yourselves for as long as you like! I believe your fans would tune in to enjoy your personalities regardless of your dwellings. You certainly have every reason to keep Emma as comfortable as you can Al! I do realize however, that I’m not paying for the rental! So that would certainly play into your decision I’m sure! Love y’all! Stay safe! 💖

Couldn’t agree more that mixing it up is the best way. Staying in the van should never feel like a test of endurance so whenever the small space, lack of amenities etc gets too much, then lots of other really cool options to keep it fresh.

My wife and I literally had the same thing happen to us in Switzerland about 2 years ago. I think it was even the same train :)) She was almost angry how big the "road tax" was and I took a good long look at the ticket and realized, nope, that's basically a train ride. Really fun and unexpected :)

Congrats to Al on 57 days of 10K steps. Now every time I see a shot where he is walking through the frame and I know he'll have to walk back to camera to retrieve it, instead of thinking how hard he is working for the channel subscribers, I'll be thinking how the channel subscribers are helping him get his steps done. On the behalf of the channel subscribers, you're welcome. 😅 Seriously though, thank you for this series. It was a corker! 👍 I'm not a cold weather kind of guys but the images of the mountains were beautiful enough to make me want to reconsider and invest in some cold weather gear.

My husband and I are planning a trip to Norway this coming summer 2023. On our previous visits we have always tented, but our age has finally caught up to us - I am 73, he is 76. So for this trip we are planning on renting a van or very small RV and then occasionally staying in cabins. We have stayed in cabins before (nothing so luxurious as the one in this video) during very bad weather, but I personally prefer tenting, even in very bad weather. But I have also traveled in camper vans and RV’s when I lived in California before moving to Europe over 30 years ago. I loved traveling that way! Stopping in the midst of some magnificent natural beauty, popping popcorn (Really!), and simply enjoying the outdoors with popcorn and a glass of wine. Life is good!

My longest streak is 38 years alive- kinda crazy!! There were definitely moments where the streak could've ended, I am so glad I've decided to keep going on this one 😉 awesome job on the steps streak!! I bet you are excited to take those walks with the whole family of beans. Cheers from the US - Great video Edit- shame on those cleaners for showing up early. What if yall were playing with your beans and sausages 🤣🤣 I've had one air bnb where we showed up (20 min late) to check in and the cleaners were still there- the host allowed us an extra hour at check out. But I would be super irritated if I had time left and cleaners showed up, I would feel rushed and that's no bueno.

I learned from a Canadian never to drink cold beverages when eating hot cheese, rouclette/fondue etc. because it just congeals the cheese in our stomachs making it undigestible. Gotta get that wine to room temp or warmer before you sip. What a beautiful treat. Even if it's very rustic and MDF, how lovely to stay in that beautiful place.

I never accidentally boarded a train in my car! LOL! But one time a while back we accidentally crossed an international border. We were in downtown Detroit, and ended up in a wrong lane that put us in the Detroit-Windsor (Ontario) tunnel. Accidentally arriving in Canada would not have been such a huge deal because before 9-11 border crossings were easy. But my husband had accidentally misplaced his drivers license. I don't remember what we specifically had to do to be able to turn around and go back to the US.

Maybe we could do van life with a larger version..full kitchen, bath, and room to move around...the cabin breaks are perfect, and I think "nah" to winter,,,other seasons, OK...you may need something larger once the little one arrives and you're ready to begin exploring again...strollers, cribs etc. take up a lot of room...but you will make the best of it...and we can't wait to see what the future holds for you all..stay safe and warm..God Bless!

Since you asked us to share, I've started a new morning routine myself, waking up 90 mins earlier to get a walk and meditation in before starting work each morning. It's been one of the best things I've ever done for myself in quite some time and I can't really see myself going back.

Thank you for the kind words Daniel 🙏 And hats off to you for your new morning routine! Sounds like the perfect way to start each day.. hope you continue doing it for a long time to come! I (Emma) actually had morning routine for a long time but have fallen out of that habit this past year.. this has made me want to start it up again - so thank you! Also.. enjoy the raclette!! 😋

“I want to recommend this.. but I don’t know where I am… or what I’m doing” 🤣 🤣 🤣. Best line ever!! We nearly ended up on one of those by accident crossing Switzerland but swerved out at the last minute. The alternative is the mountain pass, which can be very difficult to navigate in adverse weather.. your accident was probably the better choice 👍

I would definitely go for a combination of Van and Cabin life. Like you said, being in a van full time with no other more spacious accommodations, would drive one crazy.

Never did van life and only stayed in a couple of cabins. Mostly we stay in our tent. Awesome video!

That view is gorgeous! The living room is cute, but yeahh the stairs, and very basic walls aren’t really appealing. Another adventure ❤🎉

You did ask, I completed 13,100 steps on average every day during 2022! Like you, once I'd done one month I just had to do another and another...January 23 has started the same!! Love Monday's, thank you both (A 60+ follower)

I completely agree with your preference to mix up accommodations. My last road trip included stealth camping in a casino parking lot, a mid-level hotel (after a near-miss at a dodgy cheapo one), staying with family and friends, a no-frills campground, and ended with 2 nights at a timeshare complete with all sorts of little luxuries. That balance brought me home with more energy and in better spirits than I'd have had roughing it all the way.

I remember 2 times we've had a 'holiday from a holiday' ... First was when book 7 came out - we left our trailer tent in the New Forrest and drove home (other end of Hampshire) so we could buy copies just after midnight. The second time was visiting Stratford and staying in a hotel as a 2 night break from a 2 week holiday in my in-law's static caravan - it was a pet friendly hotel, and the first time I'd taken a dog into a lift. Our Dalmatian was pretty chill (90% horizontal), so just looked confused when the lift moved, and differently confused when the door opened and outside had changed! Of the 2 options - mixing van life and short breaks (e.g. cabin life) makes perfect sense. Thanks for a fantastic channel - it is very uplifting to see you show us all the things we are not able to do - you make us feel almost there. Truly great (even if my choice of words might sound wrong!) As has been mentioned - the cabin was finished in OSB (oriented strand board), which I first knew as Stirling board, maybe that was a brand. OSB is used to make SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) - these are 2 sheets of OSB with PIR insulation between. They are one way a house can be pre-built in a factory and assembled (with the help of a crane) on site. As the central core is insulation (rather than wooden battens with insulation between) it has an even thickness of insulation avoids cold spots Usually the interior would be lined with plasterboard - I'm guessing the architect / cabin owner wanted the unfinished look

Van life is just the best but I agree taking a break on longer trips is a great way to keep the human batteries topped up. I took my three kids on a mammoth Europe trip (camping) and one of the highlights was a week in a cabin in Austria - I remember the feeling well 😊
