Currywurst is THE thing we germans can fight about a lot. Cut or not cut? What type of sausage? Ketchup, mayonnaise and/or special sauce (mostly Schaschlik sauce)? Additional ingredients? Friendships are ruined about this.
@larswesterhausen7262
@larswesterhausen7262 5 жыл бұрын
It depends. In Berlin they actually prefer skinless sausage, cut into pieces and covered with tomato based sauce and curry. In the Rhineland it's more like "Bratwurst" cut to pieces. The bun is optional, but not essential. More common with grilled "Bratwurst" and mustard.

Wait, what? You came to Berlin and didn't try döner kebap, the most popular street food ever invented here (and it was, despite the name)?
@berkaypeker5532
@berkaypeker5532 5 жыл бұрын
You can say döner became popular in Berlin but it's not true that it's invented in Berlin. I think it can be called German influenced döner. It's invented in late 19th century during Ottoman era in Turkey. Furthermore, you can see variety of döner kebabs in Turkey compared to Germany
@MartinIbert
@MartinIbert 5 жыл бұрын
Well ... that depends on your point of view what döner kebap is. Of course the idea of meat on a vertical rotating grill is not a Berlin invention, neither is the idea to serve meat in a piece of flatbread. But AFAIK the classic Berlin-style Döner Kebap (meat with salad and sauce in a quarter pide bread) was indeed invented here and became sort-of popular in Turkey only later. There is a reason why döner kebap shops in places like Austin, TX or Dubai are Berlin-themed, not Turkey-themed.
@berkaypeker5532
@berkaypeker5532 5 жыл бұрын
I partly agree with you. I just wanted to emphasize the difference between döner and Berlin-style döner. When you say döner, people think all döner kebaps look like Berlin-style döner but actually there are variety of döners in the world including syrian-style. We have döner types specific to different regions. Their sauces and bread types are different that is why we call them differently like Hatay-style döner kebap, Bayburt-style döner kebap.
@JohnSmith-ez8dn
@JohnSmith-ez8dn 5 жыл бұрын
@@berkaypeker5532 Wrong - what you are talking about is the Kebap itself, the roasted Kebap, but the Döner Kebap, with this name and more important, HOW it is served, was invented in Berlin.
@berkaypeker5532
@berkaypeker5532 5 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-ez8dn As a Turk I know what Döner and Kebap means. Even others Gyro and Shawarma based on the word 'döner'. Arabs couldn't pronounce Turkish word 'çevirme' so they made it shawarma and Greeks translated it and called gyro which means spinning like döner. I say it just became popular in Germany because of Turkish immigrants. They just brought döner with them and changed a bit by adding some veggies.

So you went to a mega hipstery american café and drank american coffee, you had vegan Currywurst from Curry36 (worst, most tourist hipster Currywurst in Berlin...), a Pizza and korean food at the Hipser Markthalle 9?! Hmm no Berlin food at all and Hipster overload... Bit disappointed :( You should to try a Döner in Kreuzberg, Neukölln or Wedding, a proper Currywurst at Konopkes or a shitty looking little food wagon on the side of the street (cut up sausage with fries and Ketchup and Mayonaise), Pfannkuchen from a bakery, Berliner Weisse at any little restaurant in Berlin, local beer like Eschenbräu or something like that and if you eat meat, try Eisbein with Sauerkraut and Berliner Schnitzel to get a bit of authenticity.

Better yet, get a Splitterbrötchen from Bäcker Hacker in Prenzlauer Berg. And Konopke in Weißensee, not Prenzlauer Berg. Berliner Schnitzel might be hard to find though as people are not likely to serve cow's udder these days. Maybe at Herz & Niere in Kreuzberg. You could get Leber Berliner Art at Zum Schusterjungen in Prenzlauer Berg, though.

I see many Germans complaining about the two did not try "real german" food. I am 54 and since I was a child we e.g had Pizza in Germany. So I would consider it a modern german food cause its been common in Germany for decades. Otherwise when do you want to pull the line? 1950? 1710? Why does someone have to try old school german food? Modern german food is actually a large mix of international influences these days and this mix is what defines the german food spectrum for me, not all this Sauerkraut, Kartoffelbrei, Schweinshaxe, Rotkraut, Maultaschen, Spätzle and all that often quoted stuff I was forced to eat many times though I never liked it. So why force visitors to eat it, just because it is - no has been - typical? Others even feel insulted cause they read "german food" in the title and saw them eating pizza. What's this conservative food patriotism good for? They ate what they liked and afterwards they can say "we liked the pizza we had in Germany". I prefer that to "we tried Sauerkraut and we hated it - german food sucks!" ;-)
@b-h-t
@b-h-t 5 жыл бұрын
You have a point. I also think, that nowadays it's really common in Germany to eat all these things. For the moment I feel like the Asian cuisine has a good standing in Germany. But non the less Germany has really traditional food (way beyond the frequently cited things here). I would say one has to chose between just eating tasty food while maybe exploring the most recent cuisine at a given location and exploring traditional food from a given location.

Sam_on_12th I have different information en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kadir_Nurman Kadir Nurman (c.1933 - 24 October 2013)[1] was a Turkish-born German restaurateur, widely credited with having in 1972, in West Berlin, introduced or "invented" the fast food sandwich commonly known as the "kebab" (German: der Döner), consisting of traditional Turkish döner kebab meat stuffed together with mixed salad into a flatbread.[2][3] Nurman received a lifetime achievement award from the Association of Turkish Döner Manufacturers in 2011.[3] Afterwards, Nurman told the German magazine Frankfurter Rundschau that he was unhappy with modern döner kebab sandwiches, as "there are too many ingredients" in them.[2]

As a turk I can tell you that the mobile burger-like version of Döner Kebab has been invented in Berlin. If you buy a Döner Kebab in Germany a half piece of bread stuffed with meat, sauce and salad is what you will get. You can eat it there or you can take it with you. You will not find something like that in other countries, especially turkey. In turkey they will serve it on a plate and you are supposed to eat it there with a knife and a fork.
@boreqyas
@boreqyas 6 жыл бұрын
@Holger Summer If you actually just read the next part it says: "Several people have been credited with being the "inventor of the döner kebab" in Germany, but such claims - including that for Nurman - are widely considered inaccurate.[4] The familiar rotating döner kebab meat, roasted on a vertical spit and sliced with a sword, has been well known in Turkey since the mid-1800s. Its invention is attributed to the town of Bursa,[5] and often credited to İskender Efendi; though it has also been ascribed to a cook named Hamdi, decades earlier in Kastamonu.[6]"

Well, if you guys believe Löwenbräu would be a good beer, then I don't want to find out what you drink at home. Personally, no matter where I am, if it says Löwenbräu, I'm not entering, just because the beer is just too bad. Furthermore you're going exclusively for stuff that hardly differs from fast food and you're entirely missing the actual good part of Berlin. If you have a chance to come back again, try restaurants like "Dicke Wirtin" and you'll discover a whole different world of the REAL Berlin.

Its hard to watch you eating all these international stuff when you come to my country, instead of trying our traditional german food. Come to the south of germany and have some "Semmelknödel mit Rahmschwammerln" or "Krautschupfnudeln", "Kasspatzn" and so much more. But the most disturbing fact is, that you try to explore german cuisine that is mostly based on meat and you will never find what german food is all about as an vegetarian. Have a nice trip and come to my place in Heidelberg. Restaurant Wolfsbrunnen since 1550.

you're confusing german with bavarian. it's not like traditional bavarian food is all over germany or is the epitome of german. there are tons of other foods. besides, although i'm not a vegan or vegetarian, it's just stupid to call them out for trying to explore german cuisine in spite of that.

Jay Bee This is exactly the point. Natural meal for a homo sapiens. If you don't like it, it's also ok. I'm always wondering why vegan food has to look like non-vegan food nowadays? I can't see any reason why you can get "vegan sausage". When you eat salad or vegetables you also don't "press" it into a sausage form or do you? I don't. And I think that Hank only wanted to point out that this is not typical German, also Pizza, it's common, but not typical.

Johanna Gerke-Saat If you think so I'm fine with it. I don't complain when someone prefers eating vegan. My point is - encountering to Jay Bees question - why does vegan food have to look like meat and sausage? When I cook lentil it will look like lentil, not like a steak.
