I am French and I think my favourite French dishes are (there can't be only one!) Paupiettes de veau, bouchees a la reine and Blanquette de veau. Try it and you won't regret it !

You really should have validated those RER tickets. If you don't, you could use the same ticket over and over again since the date and time you bought the ticket isn't written on it. If you didn't want to pay the fine, you could have told them that you didn't have enough cash and no credit cards on you. If you're in a situation where you can get fined, you can either pay immediately or within a few days (at a higher price). As a tourist, you could go for the pay later option and just not pay at all. In any case, they're phasing out the paper ticket system, so the next time you come, it might not be an issue. €40 for the croque monsieur/madame was a bit on the expensive side. They're basically just grilled cheese sandwiches!

I thought so too about their lunch! Even with the coffee, it wasn't worth it. But some locations in Paris, like in all touristy places, cater to the instagram crowd, I prefer a reasonably priced cafe that's not on a main street, so I don't have to pay so much for the location. Je ne vais pas la déguster leur rue de m*rde!

Yeah we were in a tricky spot... the system they have sucks for tourists, but obviously they make a lot of money out of it... but whatever, you live and you learn. And yes, that spot was super expensive. We didn't really notice back then, but it made no sense to us compared to that nice dinner we had later that day... but again, you live and you learn... 🙈 PS: It's nice to hear that they are phasing out the paper ticket system :) Take care and happy Sunday!

It's true, it's the rule and it's logical, BUT, rules can be soften when it's our guests/tourists (I know, we totally forget hospitality here) (It is not a fraud but a mistake in good faith, good faith that is lacking on the part of the metro employees), it was easy to let them go validate them tickets. BTW, I'm thinking that those metro employees have to make a number of fines in a day (or week or month, I don't know) and so for that purpose they target tourists because it's very easy. And as a French, I'm always astonished how the metro system is not effective (stairs everywhere with suitcases in the metro stations of the railway stations!) (not to mention dirt and smell!), the lack of indications in other languages or simply in English, this, in the most visited city in the world. I feel a big shame about my own country. Please guys, receive my apology for the bad treatment. Hope the macarons have made this bad experience less bitter!

The metro system is not unique to Paris. Its the same in Iceland, Greece, England, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, etc... My cousins who live in Dusseldorf warned me that while in Germany DO NOT forget to validate my tickets or face a steep fine! You can find info about ticket validation and fines in the barrons phrasebook under "getting around town: subway." I did have a similar experience while in Paris at 2300 and the officials ticketed EVERYONE that did not validate their ticket. I did not have my photo nor signature on my Navigo card but had my receipt and explained in very broken French using my phrase book what happened. However, the official said he appreciated me trying to speak French while visiting Paris then took me to the photo booth and proceeded to help me fix my pass so I would no longer have this problem... Sans a fine. Its unfortunate this happened to you because they were very kind to me.

First time seeing your video. We are an older couple and we research all the restaurants before we come. Or I do. There are some tourist traps in Paris and food is an important part of our trip to Paris. We’d like to go to wine bars to eat because Food tends to be really good and we get To try The wine before we buy. We have our favorite restaurants we go to all the time. I’m weird also because I don’t like to eat outside, I always go inside the restaurant. Also I pick a café to eat breakfast So I can have a hot cup of tea With my croissant. The joys of getting old😊 Aloha

Hi I have a quick question because I was in Paris last year and thankfully I didn’t have a problem. And when I took the train I paid per ride so when I stuck the ticket in I went thru the turnstile or whatever. I just want to ask was yours a single ticket? Because I thought once you stick the ticket in the turnstile it stamps it right there . Or did they expect you to validate prior to entering. I just want to be sure for next time I go.

This depends on the station actually. We used the train many times during our 6 days there, and only had this problem once at the St Lazare station. We had a single ticket, but our station didn't have the machine to validate it in an obvious place. We didn't have to validate the ticket to enter the train, so be careful with those little stations outside of the city and look for the machine to validate it... always!!

You have to validate metro and train tickets everywhere I've been to in the world. I know it sucks but this is not a scam.

Yes, we know. We have taken the metro in many places all over the world. How it usually works is that you validate the ticket to enter and to exit the station. What they do in Paris in some metro stations is that the machine where you validate the ticket is not even remotely close to where you enter the metro area, hence you don't have to validate your ticket to board the train (unless you live there and know what's up). Then, they have this very aggressive people waiting at the exit of another station (in our case St Lazare I think) and almost exclusively stop whoever is holding a camera to harass them. It was quite disgusting. And clearly framed to take money from tourists. We didn't just share this to complain or anything, we shared it for other tourists to be aware that they are being targeted.

sorry if this is a silly question, im due to go next month. will be my first time using the public transport in paris. is the metro the trains? if not is this happening on trains? and what do we do exactly to avoid any of this? thank you so much

Hi! No worries, no, this is not a silly question! This happened to us using the trains that move you around the city. Be aware on the subway and the city trains and always validate your ticket, even if there's no machine to validate it at the entrance, ask around. They have a very obsolete system (although we heard they were switching to a better one, which hopefully it's true). Never accept help from a stranger either when buying your tickets. Unfortunately, there can be people targeting tourists. This is common in most Western European capitals. I also want to state, that we used the metro at least 20 times on this trip and this only happened to us once, at the St Lazare station. You will most likely be just fine :) Safe travels and enjoy one of our favorite cities in the world 🩵

Hi. This depends on which station you are. Where we bought our ticket, was outside of the city and we never saw anywhere to validate the ticket... in some stations it's pretty obvious where you can validate it. And also, they don't check for this validation at every station. This happens to us in St Lazare, so be aware ;) (they check every tourist's ticket until someone falls for it)

Dear friends, about the fine, just know that they are not "targeting" tourists. It is not a "scam" or else, it is an official one, because both tourists and locals can be fined, not only tourists. For sure, it is an unpleasant experience, and the price is high. But don't get paranoiac 🙂 It was not because you were tourists ! If you had stayed longer and used Parisian métro on a daily basis, you could have seen regular controls in the corridors, and people being fined. It is quite regular. But, again, I can understand you were upset because they did not make the effort to understand that you did not do it on purpose. Some controller can be quite narrow minded.

Yeah, it just felt like they were just stopping people holding cameras basically 🙈 it seems very hard to believe that people get fined for something so small... if you paid for the tickets, then you're good. At least that's how it's been in other countries we've visited... seems like such a terrible and unethical practice. Hopefully they will find a better way...

@@waysoftheworld_ It is true that if you are not aware or if you don't know or if nobody warns you about the necessity of validating your tickets, you can be fined, and it is very unpleasant, especially when you think that you did nothing wrong. So, once again, sorry for the bad experience, but as I said, keep in mind that it also happens to Parisians and French people (it happened to me couple of times, generally because I was in a rush and did not take the time to validate the tickets) 😉 Be sure you were not "targeted victims" because you were tourists 🙂 And if ever you come back to France, just know that it is the same (validation of the ticket) in the métro, but also in the RER, in the bus and in the train, ok ? 😉 Thanks for having taken the time to answer me ! 😉 Have a good day !

Why is the train being considered a scam? It is necessary for them to display the rules in English since it is the language of their train. I don't think the USA provides signage in French.

Well, in the US there is information provided in Spanish (and where I grew up in Florida, also in Haitian Creole), because that's the most common second language. Also, there is no system of 'validation' in the US. Thus there is no chance that you would get a huge fine. For people (tourists) unfamiliar with the system, it would be helpful to know. We were just in Italy and they make this announcement about validating tickets and the consequences if you don't - in English. Why English? Not because of Americans... because it's the most useful for the millions of foreigners and tourists that ride the train each year.

I'm late, your video is 1 year old. I am from Lorraine so quiche lorraine has no onions and even no cheese (just eggs, cream and bacon) but most of us add some cheese in it :) I was sorry for the fine, it's not a scam. I would say bad luck because usually you can't access the platform if you don't validate your ticket. There's always a gate, a turnstile that won't open if you don't validate it. You don't need some info in english, just follow everyone and do the same :) I wonder in which station you are because St Lazare is not outside of Paris and they probably have gates everywhere.. The controllers might have been nicer, I'm not defending them but it's a hard job and they are probably always stressed because many people jump over the turnstiles and they are aggressive if you catch them. Not the kind of job I would do, sometimes scary. Anyway I hope you enjoyed France and will come back. I regularly make boeuf bourguignon, it is sooooooo good

we have faced the same situation, they scammed us too! they asked us to pay 50euros or go to the embassy and pay 100 euros. very disappointing

It's mind blowing to us that you have to pay a fine for a perfectly valid ticket in 2023. Maybe they should check out the train system in Singapore and learn a thing or two... sorry to hear it also happened to you guys :(

I bought the 5(?) day Metro pass [you have to furnish 2 passport photos& I think it was 50 Euros] so I didn't have to deal w/this BS at all....

It depends on how many days you have. Both Rome and Lisbon are incredible cities, but so is Paris. We really love that city so much despite what happened ;) so don't dismiss it because of this. Macarons 5 for 5.20 Euro that is not expensive. Maybe that's why there's no taste ? Know that bakery, not so far from Place de La République. Greetings from Belgium.

@@waysoftheworld_ With the High speed train it is just 1:H20 min from Brussels ( Belgium) You can combinate a second Paris visit with ( Brussels, Gent, Antwerp and Bruges ) And if you buy your tickets 4 months ( day to day) in advance you pay 29 Euro for one trip.

Yep that's a cruel rule, but to be honest I don't feel like it's targeted on tourists (maybe mostly because they don't know about it) I lived in paris for 20 years and got caught few times... Maybe I'm wrong but I think it has changed since the covid

Maybe it was just our perception after the fact, but it really looked like they beelined towards us (we were walking around with our cameras, mic, etc.). And the two guards got our attention separately, so that we each handed our ticket to them before understanding what was going on. Reviews from tourists on Google and Tripadvisor also mention feeling targeted, but of course it's easy to feel that way after shelling out 100 Euros for a non-validated, but recently purchased, ticket...

What's that story with the tickets? That doesn't sound like a "scam". You can't enter the metro without inserting your ticket (unless you jumped over the fence or entered with someone else). Once you are inside, there's nothing else to do. You just have to keep your ticket to exit. For the trains, there's ticket composter machines in the station and on the station platform. You need to validate your ticket in one of them before going on the train. Just like in every country in the world. If you cheat, you will be fined, this is not a scam and you were lucky that you only had to pay 50 Euros. You need to validate your ticket for every transportation mode in the world, especially tickets with no reservation. It's logic 101, because what would prevent you from using the same ticket all year long? "Put the information in English" No, there's already plenty information for tourists and you can ask people. We also don't put information for paying taxi before leaving it... Americans have a reputation for being ignorant, but there's a limit.

Paris has a lot to learn from other metro stations. We did not jump over the fence. This particular station didn't have the machines where you must pass the ticket through when entering. This is common in many places, but then there are either random checks inside the train, electronic validation when entering, or something else. We had our tickets! How you describe it is exactly how it should work, but it's not how it's done in Paris. It's a system that obviously targets people holding cameras and it's very unfortunate. We saw it happen many times (at the St Lazare station). It didn't just happen to us, just read the reviews from other travelers, not just "ignorant Americans" (which we're not, but that's not the point here). We have traveled all over the world and obviously know how to use the metro. Paris is different. At least certain stations are... we just shared for other travelers to be aware ✌🏼

@@waysoftheworld_ I have spent more than 15 years in Paris and have also traveled all over the world. I know that tickets need to be validated. That's why, when I have any doubts, I just ask someone. Parisian transportation are much easier to use than many others. The Tokyo subway is way less tourist friendly. I've never had to pay a fine in Paris or anywhere else in the world. And crying scam when you are caught cheating is not very smart, especially when you pretend to be taken seriously. The only thing I agree with you is that most controllers could be less aggressive, they are often rude, even to people who have done nothing wrong.

"Crying scam where you were caught cheating" lol - ok. We payed for our tickets. It's 2023. No one should have to pay a fine when holding perfectly valid tickets. Check out SG or KL metro system. Paris for sure needs to learn a thing or two from them...

A big fine to PAID train tickets is the most insulting to anyone living in modern society. YOU BOUGHT THE TICKETS. THANK YOU BUT FUCK YOU! Even in the poorest countries, people DO NOT do the same.

The fine is not a scam. It’s part of the process for correctly using the train system. And there is no requirement to post a French rule for a French system in anything other than French. That’s like asking the US to post rules for Amtrak in Swahili. Watch natives use the system, read up on it if you plan to use it (to see if there are quirks you should know), don’t assume every little detail will be printed in your foreign language, and don’t assume a culture is going to make accommodations for ignorant tourists (especially Americans). FWIW I’m American.

Your suggestion that having information provided in English is the same as Amtrak posting info in Swahili is absurd. Of course there is no requirement that a French system post anything in a foreign language. But Paris is the most visited city in the world. And English is a global language, and would be the most easily recognizable for many of the millions of visitors to Paris. They could also post in Arabic, Japanese, etc. The fact that we are saying info should be in English has nothing to do with us being American. It’s just logic. In Florida the train stations post information in Spanish and Haitian creole. It is not a requirement, but a courtesy.

English is the most-spoken language in the world. It’s hardly Swahili. Also, England is very easily accessible by Eurostar train. Probably, by far, most of the visitors to France speak English. If signs in the US are both in English and Spanish, certainly a city like Paris, which prides itself on being a sophisticated, international city, could have some key signs in English. I have seen plenty of signs outside of retail establishments in English.

In Paris there are multi lingual instructions everywhere… they should add English, Spanish and German in the Metro stations… also, the reverse scam is to travel many times with the same « non stamped » ticked… I have almost never been controlled… and usually you cannot cross a gate without passing your ticket in a slut or a magnetic device… 🤔

English is spoken by 1.5 billion people, the most of any language in the world. Swahili is a terrible analogy. If you want to make money just be clear about the requirements.

yea we were pretty shocked by the price of things like beers and simple food in Paris. the croque monsieur we ate somewhat close to montmartre, but at least a 15 minute walk from the super touristy places. but the price was still so high!

En tant que française...je trouve que les contrôleurs du metro ou des trains sont généralement pas très tolérants avec les touristes ...et nous avons hontes des fois de leurs comportement ..j ai vecu cette scène avec une jeunes filles anglaise qui a dût payé 50 euro parcequ elle n avait poinçonner son billet. Elle pleurait çà ne les a pas arrêtés pour autant..c 'est honteux alors qu'elle avait payé sa place ..quand on voit le nombre de personnes qui fraudent et qu ils ne font rien, pour éviter tous débordements...c 'est honteux de s 'en prendre à des touristes..il est très rare de tombé sur un agent qui laissera tombé l 'amande malheureusement...et si vous venez a Paris pour les jeux olympiques sachez que nôtre chere ministre des transport passe le ticket de metro à 4 euros ...comment profitez des jeux pour plumer les touristes..quelle fierté des fois d être Francaise...💙🤍❤

If you don't validate your ticket, you can travel infinitely for free. It is obvious that you have to validate them. Don't worry, they also catch french people doing that. Please don't take the excuse that it's not written in your language. You are not in your country. Nobody owes you anything. Plus you should have seen EVERYBODY doing that around you AND it is normaly impossible to enter the Subway without validating a ticket... So your story is really really weird.

agree nobody owes us info in English, but as one of the most visited cities in the world, it could be helpful to millions of people... also, it wasn't the subway. it was a train and we purchased a ticket from one specific station to the next. and the ticket would have been eaten or nullified when exiting, so we couldn't have used it indefinitely.

For any potential future French tourists - this video is completely incorrect about the ‘scam’. It is totally legit and applied to residents alike - you have to keep your ticket to validate before leaving. They place ‘contrôleurs’ in various stations at random times to verify - if not they ticket you on the spot. They make the tourists pay immediately because otherwise they’ll leave the country and not pay. It’s bizarre this creator didn’t spend a moment to research what happened here…

Yeah what an awesome thing they do to people that are legitimately paying for their tickets, and the way they treat everyone was awful too. We saw what we saw, and that's why we shared it. Tourists should be aware! Take your time too to read the reviews about this awful practice. We were not the first and will definitely not be the last! And PS, we called it an 'official scam', of course is legit and official, but still an awful practice. We literally saw people jumping above the turnstile in other stations and no one doing anything about that... they were literally only stopping tourists (at least at that station)

@@waysoftheworld_ I still don't think you understand - the price of the ticket will vary based on your distance. This allows them to charge a lower price for those making short trips in inner-Paris (i.e, likely all of your trips). So you have to validate the ticket at the end to verify you paid the right price. By your logic I guess we should stop ticketing people for parking illegally, speeding, etc....I'm sorry for arguing, but I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding this French practice and misrepresenting it to your followers, and it frustrates me.

We understand perfectly ✌🏼 It would have been nice if they would have let us validate the tickets when leaving the station. In a metro system that works, it's fairly easy for metro employers to verify when a ticket was purchased and for which route, without the need to fine people for a perfectly valid ticket. It's 2023.

we didn't suggest putting it in English because we are from the US, it's because English is the most widely spoken language in the world - including both native and multilingual speakers. also, USA has information in Spanish and sometimes other languages. In my home state of Florida regulations are included in Hatian creole, as well. so your response is poorly thought out - English would help visitors from countless other countries. that should be obvious 🤷🏻‍♂️
