We hit the streets of Bamberg to taste test Germany’s most popular street foods: Currywurst & Döner! Watch our reactions to see what we thought!
Although it's been a rough go getting out during our first month in Germany, we were eager to try some new foods that many of our followers have suggested. This is just the beginning of our dive into some incredible German cuisine. & yes, we still are trying to say Döner the right way :).

Rules for a good Döner-Store: - First words you hear while entering are: Hallobittschön! - Salesman calls you "Chef" - His wife is baking the bread in the background - You can choose between Chicken or calfmeat - "Mit Scharf" is more than a few sprinkles of Chilli powder Döner is Love.

Döner can taste very different in germany. Depending on salads, sauce, kebab . The Berlin-Döner is not the Cologne-Döner. And the Cologne-Döner is not the Munich-Döner. So you have to try everywhere you go.

As I have lived a year in Nuremberg from Cologne and back again I can tell you another difference. And that is even bigger. In Bavaria most Döner is turkey. That's it. Only a very few Shops have Beef Döner (and then very expensive) or Chicken Döner which is way more common in the north or at least in Nortrhine Westphalia. And I never had real good Döner there. And I checked out a few. The beef döner was absolutee disgusting. Another thing I learned that many "Wurstbuden" (Sausage stands like the one in this Video) sell Bockwurst as Currywurst. It's a completely different concept. I only found very few stands in Nuremberg, Amberg, and Munich that sell a real Currywurst as it should be. So many tourists never actually eat a Currywurst as they think they did.
@RebellHAI
@RebellHAI 3 жыл бұрын
@c b There are regional differences. Yes there are. You can find it anywhere. In Beer, in Bread, in language, in what people eat, the hell even different water. So of course there is a regional difference in Döner as well. But that seems to be different for every other person. But believe me, I tried many all over Germany, the difference is sometimes huge. But you're right as well. Sometimes it depends on the quality of the meat, the combination and most important: the spices. But, again for me, it seems that, at least in the Nuremberg area, I didn't had found one good Döner that could compete with the ones say in Cologne area. And I checked around 12 different Restaurants in Nuremberg. Only two or three of them had given the choice for beef as alternative for turkey. Only one had chicken instead of turkey. So it might be bad luck that I just didn't find a good one. That's very possible. But speaking of experience it is was it is.

Smells funny, you sure it's even edible?" 😂 Next recommendation, (since you love to put things in Brötchen🙄) is "Leberkäs im Brötchen", a kind of meat that has nothing to do with liver or cheese, but is delicious when hot. Also, more for breakfast, you won't find it on the street: try to hollow out your Brötchen through one side and fill it with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and chives. It's fantastic! So I know how it is to leave everything and (almost) everyone behind and start all over again as a Johnny-come-lately, not only in a different country, but also on a different Continent. My wife and I travelled A LOT during this time and we have seen at least 30 States and most of the big National Parks and other "Have-to-go-areas". That years might have been the best times of our lives. So take it all in and have fun. And if you ever happen to drive through Northern Germany (on your way to Scandinavia or so), please consider a quick stop there, so we can have a little chat about our experiencies whilst eating a "Krabbenbrötchen" or a "Backfisch" :-) And I love your family. One of the best content I've seen in regards to production, information quality and fun. Stay save!

Or other types of names who I don't know because I am truly a "Nordlicht" how we call it here. Northern Light. It's a definiton of people who are living in the North or grew up there. It's not a Bread. 😃 And the "Döner" has so much different tastes and Varieties here. Every store or Grill/Restaurant makes it different. 😊 So, the Taste is almost always different. Definitely try Döner in the Northern half of Germany (that is, anywhere North of Bavaria). They use a weird pita bread in the south that doesn't taste nearly as good as the Turkish bread used everywhere else. The seeds on your roll that you thought were fennel, look like caraway to me by the way.

Currywurst is a Berlin invention from after WWII. A snackbar owner created that special sauce and soon everybody else tried to copy that. Unfortunately that lady died a couple of years ago without telling her secret before! Döner also swaped from Berlin and perhaps the region around Dortmund over whole Germany. Bit by bit more kinds of salad found their way in. But now you still have to check out the one missing speciality: Roast sausages with mustard. I saw them in your video an the grill. And now I`m local coloured and recommend the thin short ones with sweet mustard, preferably from "Händlmeier". That`s a mustard producing company from Regensburg and they make the one and only sweet mustard you need for roast sausages (here some people will say something else about that, but, so what?!). And - it`s the only mustard you eat with THAT Bavarian (more Munich but anyway) sausage: The "Weißwurst" (translates literally "white sausage")! It`s such a shame that no restaurants can open now, because you have to be introduced the right way in eating "Weißwurst" the first time: Weißwurst + Händlmeiersenf + Brezn (your bretzel) + Weißbier (and peel the sausage before eating!!!) 😁👍

Oh I love home cooked meals so much more than the fast food you tried. There are a few sweet options as well, like Hefeklöße mit Blaubeeren, which are steamed buns with a hot blueberry sauce. So good! My grandma’s kitchen used to be filled with homemade buns.. we also like to eat them with melted brown butter and salt. Or Milchreis, which is Milkrice, with melted brown butter, a sugar cinnamon mix and apple sauce. Or Plinse, how we like to call them here in a part of east Germany. Imagine a mix of a pancake and a crepe. I like to put butter on them and then just sugar. They are served with apple sauce as well. So much more to explore!

If you ever get to go to the swabian area you need to try Käsespätzle and Maultaschen (not the ones you can buy in the supermarket though)! Also, I have a feeling that pronouncing Döner is the best way for you to practice the German 'ö' sound :) the closest you can get to it is to take the "thinking sound" - uh..- and say it instead of the O. It's not perfect but might help along the way.

The Curry Wurst was invented in Berlin in the early fifties and they say you still get the best Curry Wurst in Berlin at Konnopke's. But I'm sure you will get good Curry Wurst in Frankonia, too. Although Frankonia (where you live) is rather famous for it's Rostbratwurst. Especially in Nuremberg.

Do you know that there are currywurst eating competitions in Germany? It's about sharpness and Scovile heights, e.g .: Scovile starts at 80,000 and goes up to 9 million sharpness. (80,000 drops of water on a drop of hot sauce to neutralize it). The doner kebab is also available in a thin dough roll, and tastes differently in Germany. Next you have to try french fries with mayonnaise or an "Zwiebelmettbrötchen".

I think it was after his last travel to the US when he said that he wants to try Currywurst this time. Bc of his brain injury, he is lying a lot. I already knew that he would pass on Currywurst when he would just hear the word. So, there was an event at our city and i ordered some Currywurst with some fries. As usual, he didn't pay attention when i was talking, so he didn't hear my order. After I've got my order, i asked him if he wanted to try some sausage with the sauce. He wanted to, bc it looked delicious. He tried it. Afterwards i asked if he liked it. He loved it. I said: "So, you just ate your first Currywurst!"
