Difference of the tanks… The fuel pump “hole” is bigger on the 99+ tanks. It took me forever to find an insert that could be used with an external pump. Remember when this cobra was built, fox body stuff was readily available. I ended up using the aeromotive setup but was expensive and new. I believe that is the reason for the swap.

It is also much cheaper to convert to return style fuel with this tank and the baffling was not good on the stock tank. The common swap became to do an 03/04 Cobra tank as it had much better baffles versus the fuel pump basket all other 99/04 used.

My vote for future of the car is when the built 5.4 goes back in the Lightning use the stock 5.4 short block in it and have the 99-01 C heads rebuilt and put it back that way. Cost effective and with a lower boost retune probably still an 11 second car with modern tires and other upgrades.

Since the engine turns back a bit but is locked up when you turn it forward , my best guess without having seen it is that the timing chain is broken on one side and is binding up locking the engine. Dual overhead cam engines tend to still move some usually backwards if a timing chain chain breaks.

@@MruGotP3NED1 I would expect a lot more carnage in one of the cylinders if a valve dropped though. I mean unless it was a really low RPM failure, but that doesn't explain how the idler got annihilated by the belt like that. The keepers and spring were still in their proper places as well, so it seems more like a timing set failure, either before or after the engine stopped running abruptly lol

4:50 Try using some brake cleaner for rubber lube, you'll be amazed. I found it out by accident once when I picked up the wrong can one time. Your stuck motor reminds me of last week's hell. In '91 I bought a '69 SS Elcamino and 6 years ago I sold it to my best friend. Last march, he passed away and left it to my daughter (she wanted it when I sold it but, I talked her out of it). It hadn't been started for 22 years! I cleaned out the whole fuel system. I removed the plugs and squirted oil in all the cylinders and made sure the crank turned. Then, I changed the oil and primed the heck out of the oil pump. Reinstalled the distributor and cranked it over so, I could see 50+ psi on the oil gauge. Reinstalled the plugs, put fuel in carb through the vent, and started it. It fired right up and died after a few seconds. It did this several times. I was working the throttle to keep it running, nothing over 2,000 rpms. The 5th and last time, it made kind of a "klink" sound when it quit. Crank wouldn't turn. #3 plug is regapped as in zero gap. Used my camera, shattered piston. When I get my Stupidru back together, I'll pull it and see if There's enough left to fix. Hope you have better luck! At least yours might only have rusty cylinders.

Something else to keep in mind from my history with SC these 4V motors back in the day. if you go back with a similar setup, the Vortec uses the same super long 6 rib belt, and stock factory tensioner to drive all the accessories, and the blower, and keep tennis on everything. Some companies offered an 8 rib conversion, to help with belt slip. Still, that's a lot of small idler pullies and accessories winging around at 6-7 K to make power on this motor, and the pullies better be dead on aligned, or ....issues

Did you guys check the VIN to verify it's a real Cobra? I mean, it's got a stick axle and Cobras came with IRS. It could have been changed for the strip, but that doesn't look like a drag car (with the current wheel/tire combo). Also, the fish gills on the rear quarters are Saleen pieces, I believe. With all the changes, I wonder if it's a converted GT - a Faux-bra. I don't know if Ford skipped 2000 Cobras due to shame over low hp numbers, but they may have been focused on the 2000 Cobra R.

I’m willing to take a bet that there was too much boost for the factory engine… which caused the head gaskets to blow… then there was fluid that sat in the cylinders. (Insert mic drop here 🙂)

but the that would mean coolant would be in the plug wells. it was water, not coolant so the engine might have flooded at some point

Hi guys, my name is Glen from Canada (Edmonton Alberta) , love the channel. I bought an old 68 Camaro that had no spark plugs in it for 2 years, I was told to put kerosene in a rusted locked up engine and let it soak for a couple days. It worked awesome and never cracked any rings and ended up working awesome. There is an oil in the kerosene that eats up all the rust

Tried posting a link but seems it it not allowed. I searched beefcake on blueoval news and a link came up from SVT performance. Stock motor was put in after the built one up blew. Not good news... Needs new motor and no good forged components of value from okd one.

It won’t let me post links but keep checking the comments of this video, there are many people who know the story of this car. I just saw a comment from someone who claims he witnessed when this car blew its engine. Good luck with the project tho.

If the engine locked up at high rpm, could the momentum of the alternator etc have broken the tensioner?

Alex, when you rebuild the engine. Stock crank balanced, molnar pwr rods, diamond pistons. It will be good for 1200 no problem. That teksid block, have done 5.88 with no sleeves in the 1/4. That's after seeing 9's, 8's 7's and 6's. Also, I highly recommend a head cooling mod. The 93-03 4v don't have proper coolant flow in the 6th and, the 8th cylinder. So they ruin valves.

If you need cams, I recommend Todd Warren at apocalypse performance. Also, there was a 2000 cobra r with a 5.4 4v. There was also an 02 cobra in Australia. Only 200 of the 02 cobras.

My dad brought a old 53 GMC with a Straight six in it and I used a large screw driver on the Flywheel to rotate the engine 1/4 inch at a time. After an hour I got it rotating with the starter. That was six years ago and she still runs like new.
