In 2012 our very own Andy Baddeley set the parkrun World Record with a time of 13 minutes and 48 seconds. 10 years on that record still stands and rightly so as it is incredibly quick!
So we thought if we teamed up, could we beat the time as a relay? Welcome to The Running Channel’s parkrun World Record relay attempt!
↓↓ Will we beat Andy’s time? Who would you want in your relay team? Let us know in the comments! ↓↓

We can all look at Marathon runners on the TV and think, maybe I could run that fast, but then the camera cuts to the very enthusiastic person trying to keep up on the path beside the racers, and you realise, just how quick they are going. I recently did a race, that involved a pretty nasty couple of hills (the Man 'o' War run here in Dublin) and I did a sprint finish, which my watch told me was a pace of 2-33 for the last 150 odd meters. Andy ran just 13 seconds slower, for 5000 meters, mind blowing stuff. Not to detract from Andy's achievements, but having done timekeeper at my local parkrun a couple of times, I see the pride in people's faces when they PB, that PB may be 25, 30 or 40 odd mins, but all were hard earned and worthy of pride. So folks, whatever your parkrun PB is, give yourselves a pat on the back, oh and Andy and the crew, take a bow, seriously, that was super human running from all of you.

I've done 3 Parkruns now and really enjoying them. Our route doubles back so I (briefly) get to see the leaders coming towards me. They almost look like they're sprinting. To think that this lot would still be running for 4 minutes after Andy finished his world record run is mind blowing. These very fast runners would be over a km behind!

My relay idea is you have a team of five, you take turns of 200m each, so each runner will run 200m x 5 turns in total, 1km total each, yeah? Should be good. I've just had a crazy idea for batons - you cover the baton in velcro, wear one velcro glove. As the runner gets close to the handover, they use their non-velcro hand to rip it off. Therefore - how easy is that to then stick the baton into the next runner's velcro gloved hand? There's no way it's going to drop or go wrong. Like all ideas - maybe someone has tried it.

Before I watched this video I was not aware of the park run record. The idea that Andy did this without supershoes on grass kind of bends reality in many regards. These guys all sprinted 200-400 meters with vaporflys on. He found another dimension to power through in his park run. The idea that he traversed non flat terrain at that speed is absolutely super human. The monologue about the park run is true. I know he held medals and records on the track and that's incredible in and of itself. But track conditions are intrinsically perfect in competition. There's just so much stuff to blame in a park run. Wind elevation mud grass... My mind can accept beating an animal like a cheetah on the track in a foot race easier than I can accept Andy's speed in a park run. The biggest smile I've had watching a video by the running channel.

Wonderful video! 400m segments @ 2:48 pace would be out of the question for me, but I think I could pitch in 2 or 3 200m sprints close to that pace. I regularly tack on 6x200m hill repeats @ 3:20 pace (about 40 seconds) at the end of my easy runs, so on a flat track with more rest in between, 33-34s 200m would be within reach.

The fact that he was only 11 seconds behind my first 2 mile pr (13:37) in a 5k is absolutely Vin Dieseling! With not so good shoes, on grass, no pacer, and what seems like not the best diet he could have had at that time, it seems super complex, even though it's simple in the grand scheme of things, it seems soooo hard to understand, HOW he did it!
