Can you make a part 2 video series on this and try more older game titles to see if they will run? @@AprilSamurai I just feel like other channels are too focused on discussing salesman like topics and "use cases" and that the hosts dont even know how to use the stuff all that well. here it's like one of us geeks, one of us true "powerusers" doing the video. kinda like Major Hardwares videos. i like to see someone talk about tech who has a passion for tinkering and experimenting just to see it happen like in this video here since i do similar things on my own. its always fun to see these creative project videos tho. the big contrast would be that when someone like Linus does a fun creative experiment video like this, it seems he has other people like his guy Anthony doing the actual thinking in the background while Linus kind of keeps circling it back around to something marketable.

@@AprilSamurai honestly, I feel that most of the tech youtubers show they can purchase equipment, set it up, run benchmarks/games but very few can actually get much past that. Ufd tech & Linus do the worst when they do a creative project video and never even figure out how to accomplish the task the video is about and kinda just give up. I love gamersnexus but Steve is such a industry investigator that his content is rarely that entertaining outside of his worst of the year build vids. Yes it's the same engine (Unity) but they both use different graphics API backends. Also a warning for anybody who wants to try this: Do not install the L4T megascript version of Steam unless you install box64, install wine, and then build Box86 first: it uses a newer version of Glibc than 18.04 has (I think it's 2.29, whereas 18.04 only supports 2.27). Finally, someone showcases the true modding wonders of the Switch! There was nothing quite like a fully unlocked Switch until the Steam Deck arrived. Running Kodi, Android TV and RetroArch on this machine is beautiful (I even made a fine custom Mega Bezels NTSC+CRT RetroArch shader preset specifically optimized for the Switch), and at home, I actually prefer streaming games from my actual PC on the network using Sunshine or Steam Link over actually attempting to run them on the Switch itself. Having a v1 unit with the original 20nm Tegra X1, I don't have the luxury of pushing the clocks nearly as hard, but the memory overclocks that are in my reach are still good enough to fix the usual performance issues plaguing many retail Switch games. And when I'm feeling rebellious, I also stream plenty of emulated Wii, Wii U and 3DS games on the Switch from my desktop, even getting to use the Switch touchscreen for those games. Running the entire operation on my local network, performance isn't actually bad at all, and it also means getting to play RTX titles with the Switch at 60fps, which is quite the trippy sight, even if it's actually just acting as a wireless display and controller combo.

i dont think its completely fair to credit this to the switch... nintendo try to do everything to stop people from using their device as they see fit, switch is intended to be an locked platform except that nintendo failed at it, the modders or in this case linux is the one who deserve credits. im saying that because there is no guarantee that future nintendo consoles will be unlocked like that any time soon, they will try to make it harder and harder each generation, while platforms like the steam deck are quite the opposite, funding valve means funding this openes (at least for now, if they dont change their mind in the future, steam client is proprietary but at least steamOS is floss)

@@igorgiuseppe1862 Personally, even better if a corporation tries their absolute A game to lock a device down only to have all those artificial locks completely and thoroughly destroyed by the community. I want them to waste their time and money, only for their years of work to be defeated in a month's time. Nintendo has a history of trying the best lockdown techniques available only to have them fall completely flat because Nintendo hackers do not rest until they leave no stone unturned and no lock intact. We need more scenes like the Nintendo scene. The Switch was destined to be cracked wide open in record time from the beginning regardless of how good of a job Nintendo did on its security, like every other Nintendo console before it. So much so, it even brought collateral damage as various other previously secure devices also got cracked because of the Switch due to sharing similar architecture. They want to be the Disney/Apple hybrid of game consoles so bad and their own fans just won't let them. And I love them for it. Still, I won't deny it. Valve's been doing god's work out there, and the Steam Deck is a marvelous piece of technology with unrivaled features out of the box. It is thanks to Valve's work on Proton that my life as a Linux gamer became so much easier. And if the Steam Deck had existed when I bought my Switch, I probably would've gotten it instead. Heck, I might just buy a Steam Deck either way. But I never buy systems that I can't unlock.

By the way, proper 64bit WoW64 support for Wine is coming. It will finally allow people to run old 32bit Windows software on 64bit-only Linux without requiring multilib, and make it easier to implement CPU architecture translation overall. This, combined with DXVK, might be the step that finally allows people to easily play old PC games on their Android and other mobile devices.

@@3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 i dont think that hackers that try to hack nintendo consoles are better than the ones who try to hack other devices, the issue is that nintendo is less competent when it comes to lock their devices. that is why i dont think the solution is to have more hackers, soon or later we might be defeated by companies, having more hackers or better is part of the solution but the most important part is not to support $$ those companies to begin with. companies like valve are much better in that regard, they could try to enter the console market with an closed system and ecosystem but chosen not to, the way they "fight" against piracy is mostly trying to offer an better service than betting on things like DRM.

This is really really awesome seeing box86/64 run a Nintendo Switch! It seems the NVidia drivers are of good enough quality to run most games through DXVK/VKD3D without any graphical issues. The bottleneck seems to be the x86 translation on the weak CPU cores. Perhaps you could do a follow up video, trying to run the same games with FEX-Emu (git version) to see how it compares to box64. FEX-Emu is getting a lot of love lately.

something interesting you must try is vita2hos, a homebrew program that can be loaded from atmosphere (the most used custom firmware in switch and copies the og system horizon), this software vita2hos is a translation layer to play almost natively Vita games on switch since both systems are arm based (it's kinda like proton on linux, but to play vita games on the switch)

This leaves me thinking what would be possible to do with a Jeston Orin! I really would love to test it myself but I don't have the funds to buy one just for testing this. I would hope that you could test it for all of us see how far can we go with the translation layers! Thanks for the great work!

Isn't that an AI accelerator chip? The cpu/gpu may be better than this chip, but it'll still be pretty crap.
@Guilherme_Oliveira72
@Guilherme_Oliveira72 8 ай бұрын
@@tappy8741 No, it's a SBC that runs ARM, so imagine that you have a phone chip but you can use like 15 to 25W. It's the same concept as the Switch actually but way more recent. The SBC version of the switch SoC was commercialized as the Jetson Nano, the current version of that product is named Jetson Orin, it has AI accelerator logic but it still has the normal CPU/GPU, but the current CPU cores are way faster than the Nano and the GPU is way bigger and has a much newer architecture.
@tappy8741
@tappy8741 8 ай бұрын
@@Guilherme_Oliveira72 I understand that as a modern chip it iterates cpu/gpu and will be on a much better node, the cpu in particular is much improved. Still they've pushed AI in the marketing and may have de-emphasized raster performance in favour of cuda cores for ai/ml if it came to it, if I were to guess the gpu may not be as impressive for gaming as you might imagine. But 17 billion is a lot of transistors, if we're lucky they've "wasted" some of them re-using consumer raster instead of designing a more optimal AI solution for their primary purpose. Samsung 8nm is pretty good, behind tsmc 7nm but either at this point will be cheap as they are not bleeding edge but still pretty efficient. It's like 5 year old tech, best suited to large wide designs at lower clocks for power efficiency.

I have a 2017 model and it handles overclocking ok, The fact it can run gta 5 is mind blowing. I would love to see a dedicated video showing windows games running with as low of settings as possible. I believe gta 5 would run much better with shadows off and all graphics options at the lowest :). Great video!

this was really fun to watch. and no wonder why MiHoYo hasbeen radio silent on Genshin for the Switch. At least we finally know why. I would honestly greatly prefer Honkai Star Rail to be ported anyways havent touched Impact since Star Rail released 😆 MiHoYo could at least say " we tried and failed" with impact though.

the amount of gain is not the point, its the type of gain that is worth it. this doesn't just demonstrate that the Switch can run Linux that runs Windows games, it demonstrates that ARM devices can run Windows games without Windows. and that's beautiful, the only things that would be more awesome would be a RISC-V device doing the same, though it would probably be just as impractical.

@sawyiier4870 I'm excited for the next Switch, but this video really shows how bad the Tegra was in the CPU side of things, and DLSS doesn't really solve a CPU bottleneck. Hopefully NVIDIA will ship a better CPU this time around, if a Maxwell GPU already went that far then an Ampere GPU with DLSS could be mind-blowing on Switch.
