In this video we have a sit down chat with father phil and uncle phil about our history with milking cows way back in the 1950s milking shorthorn cows by hand from there to when we lost the majority of our cows to TB in 2004 and had to give it up.
Hope you enjoy, any questions hit me down in the comments below, thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe for more. Videos every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

That was so nostalgic for me. MY Grandfather had a 2 unit Alfa laval milking unit and milked 26 cows. I still have one of those buckets today. I was there when we went from churns to bulk tank. Just like these fellas I recall it like yesterday and often chat to my sister about these times. Thank you for putting this video up. Keep your family safe and best wishes from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

My dad milked cows up until the 70s. He had a dexta. He used to run the dairy vacuum pump off the pto if there was a power outage to allow him to keep milking. He used ten gallon cans too. Sometimes he had to chase the milk truck on the dexta (with the cans) if he was running late.

Great video Phil, I'd missed the dinner table chats. Jaysus ye had a rough time of it with the TB so in 04 and onwards, a credit to ye to even go back into cattle. TB wiped out the cattle on my Grandfather and uncle in mid 80's and it ended up sinking the farm a decade later as they hadn't modernised the tillage enough to keep up. Ye are a credit to the industry to lay it bare like that 👏

Great bit of farming history there Phil. I know exactly what the lads are talking about, 10 gallon and 20 gallon milk churns and coolers. We used to stand the churns in half an old tar barrel with cold water running into the barrel and cooling the churn from the outside. And milking the cows by hand. Hardship!

The many trials and tribulations of trying to stay in the game and become a fantastic success in the world of farming eh Phil!!!! All I can say is that you have some mentors in dad and the uncle (who is looking fekn fab thank god !!!!!) What does not kill us makes us stronger wa….!! Fond memories of the plate coolers of old and the washing board ones too but not so fond are the memories of the cold water in the pit washing udders twice a day and the cracks in the hands stinging afterwards if ya got a bit a caustic water on em when changing the milk sock for the following morning...... fecks sake they were the best days of my life and I would do it all over again if my back would let me !!! Stay safe folks !!

This was such an interesting video, can't wait for the next one. It brought back memories for me of the milk churns having to learn to roll them out to the wooden milk stand on the road and be dared not to tip them too much. I don't remember hand milking, but I do remember Dad had a portable Milk Parlour, mostly it was on a concrete base at the farm but if the cows were a fair way from the farm he used to take the milking parlour out to the field and leave it there to do the milking.

If a cow gets TB it is killed and (incinerated I think) to prevent further spread of the disease, if there was TB on the farm now then there would be constant tests for months afterwards and plenty of animals gone to waste, problem with the TB test is that it only tests for if they have come in contact with the virus
@steyrman2

Hi I understand the Tb the cows go to be slaughtered sometimes the Tb don’t show up but the point I’m making is the milking herd was taking out because of TB when the stoped milking the went to suckler herd TB is still a problem but the have a lot more stock on the farm now the can’t have the same losses to TB what changed to cause this
