12:18 Light has gasoline in what is basically a sandwich bag for his booby trap. The gasoline would eat through the plastic and permeate in his desk drawer. When Light wakes up the next morning for school he'll be really lightheaded from the fumes filling his room, with Re'Uuk laughing his ass off in the corner.

I was never much of a smosh fan as a kid but that video is why for many years before I actually watched Death Note, I thought there was actually such a thing as a Life Note.

Ryuk's original design was actually meant to be a hot human guy. But they chose not to go with it, because it would get in the way of Light.

@@Jewish_Childoriginally, the author planned for shinigami to look like humans, Ruk being an attractive man with white hair; then they changed their mind because they believed people would find ryuk to be hotter than light. Typically, you want the protagonist to be the center of attention, so Light having his thunder stolen wouldn't be the best move. So the shinigami got the monster designs we know today.

That's intentional. The mangaka also wrote a manga about writing manga (Bakuman) hilariously enough, and it's very much based on his own experiences. And he very much goes into how you can create humor via combining absurdity with seriousness.

1.) You need the "real name" of the intended target, so writing nicknames or aliases like "MrBeast" wouldn't work. 2.) Visualize first, THEN execute. This is to ensure writing "John Smith" doesn't take out every single person named John Smith. A picture of the intended target works just as good in this regard, though. The actual in-series rules are numerous, covering general shinigami etiquette regarding the notebook (for example, shinigami CAN kill without using the notebook, but doing so will result in punishment AND death), as well as what the notebook can and can't do (deaths can't result in collateral casualties, users can't physically buy/sell the notebook, etc.). Shinigami, and their "King", aren't beholden to disclose these rules to the users (though some notebooks have the rules written out for them to read at their leisure), and the King can add new rules in the future, so there's always room to add unto those that already exist.
