Quint's monologue about the USS Indianapolis is, in my opinion, one of the best and most chilling ever done. The fact that the actor, Robert Shaw, was actually drunk probably made it even better.

Fun Fact: The reporter on the beach was Peter Benchley, the guy who wrote Jaws. I'm sure some other commenters have mentioned this, but Bruce (the shark, which was named after Spielberg's lawyer), didn't work all the time. The mechanics had problems with the water, so they had to work around it. That's probably why it's so good, because of the suspense with the music and seeing the swimmers from the shark's POV. When they would get the shark working, they'd make announcements on the island where the crew was staying, so they could all hurry to the beaches/docks and get back to filming. Also, the shooting stars you saw in the background were a happy coincidence. In fact, they didn't realize they were there until they went back and looked at the film.

Jaws is often referred to as the original Summer Blockbuster and catapulted a young and upcoming movie director Steven Spielberg into directorial fame and launched his directing career which already had success with a movie called the SugarLand Express. The USS Indianapolis Monologue spoken by Quint is all the more terrifying due being based on a real event. It is historically accurate as well. Originally the mechanical shark nicknamed Bruce, after Spielberg’s Lawyer, was supposed to be seen often but kept malfunctioning frequently do to the affects the salt water as the movie was shot in Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts and in the open ocean off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard which was a very ambitious gamble on the part of young Steven Spielberg.much credit is given to the musical score and Spielberg’s on the spot creativity in finding ways to insinuate that the shark is present using thing like the yellow barrels. The music or shark Jaws theme plays a roll in the way you hear or don’t t hear it. When you hear it means the shark is likely present and when you don’t hear it the shark is not present. There is a behind the scenes video of the making of Jaws as well as one that I think is great in explaining why for its time the mechanical shark was a great movie monster that audiences could believe in due the direction of Steven Spielberg and the musical score compose by famed movie soundtrack composer John Williams.

Fun facts: the man who plays the reporter at 13:45 is the same man who also wrote the book! Also, the point where the actor who plays chief Brody sees the shark and says, "you're gonna need a bigger boat" was the first time he sees the shark, and the reaction he gives to first seeing the shark was kept for the movie!

It depends on the merit badge you are trying for what you have to do to earn it. In this case it is a badge that requires a mile swim, preferably in over the head open water, but it is not actually a merit badge. It is a badge you can earn even as an adult which is different than a merit badge.

The scariest thing about this movie was how many millions of sharks were slaughtered indiscriminately because of the phobia towards them this movie produced. Peter Benchley has said he regrets how he depicted sharks and became a major proponent of ocean conservation in the aftermath of his novel.

One of the all-time greatest films! John Williams score is one of the most recognizable in cinema history. The Mayor comes across as an idiot for keeping the beaches open. But if I remember right, he actually had a reason, albeit selfish one. In the book, he was in cahoots with the mob. Which isn't mentioned in the film. Also, Hooper (Dreyfus character) is different from the book. In the book he's more...unsavory if recall. He and Ellen (Brody's wife) have an affair (she has a bigger role in the book).

The guy at the beginning of the movie couldn't have done a thing even if he'd been cold sober. Btw, when I was a kid in the 70s in Massachusetts, I was friends with a kid who's dad was one of the cops on that boat! Martha's Vineyard is a very pleasant place, esp if you're there off season.

Seeing you two react to one of the most iconic and classic movies ever reminds me of how deprived your generation is for excellent quality movies. These days, everything is done with green screens and computer graphics, but the REAL art was practical effects, and although "Bruce The Shark" was a huge animatronic creation that broke down a lot, the look of a practical effect far exceeds the false reality of CG. Jaws came out the year I was born, and it launched not only Steven Spielberg's career as a director, but also John Williams' career as a movie score composer. That iconic "dun-dun-dun-dun" bit put him on the map, and John Williams went on to score the Star Wars movies. I swear that after I saw "Jaws", every time I went near a body of water, I had to see if it had sharks, and I'm talking swimming pools AND even freshwater lakes! "Jaws" is so iconic that it is quoted probably the most of all films, and certain scenes are also replicated in other movies. About that shooting star effect you both caught, it's not real. It's kind of a lens flare, since those scenes were actually shot during the day and the camera had filters on it to appear as if it was dark. What you saw was a flare of light off the lenses that even fooled astronomers for a time. I'm surprised those shooting star/lens flares didn't end up in a lot of films, since shooting night scenes during the day was something that was somewhat common back in the day.

At 6:38 actor Robert Shaw ("Quint") looks strikingly like my Grandfather: the face, the hair, the laugh, and especially the way he talked when "Quint" gives his famous monologue about the USS Indianapolis. He almost mumbles when he talked, and when he laughed and talked, it was sometimes hard to understand his trailing-off words. Every time I watch Jaws, I can't get over how much I see my Grandfather in "Quint"

There is a badge for the Mile Swim. It is not a requirement for any merit badge. It's a separate thing. Minor detail, but it always bugs me. However, Steven Spielberg, a former Boy Scout, did develop and teach the Cinematography merit badge.

I was 13 went this came out and My parents would not let me see it in theaters but over the years I have seen it many many times. To this day some of my most favorite movie lines came from this movie and Quint is responsible for most of them. no matter how many times I hear him tell the story about the USS Indianapolis I still get chills. That was a true story and between the sharks and the thirst driving men insane I cannot think of a worst situation to be in.

Jaws actually changed culture and gave sharks a bad reputation. Spielberg actually regrets the reputation sharks got because of his film. What a great film though. You should check out the next film Spielberg did after Jaws. It's called, Close encounters of the third kind. About Aliens. The actor who played Hooper, Richard Dreyfuss stars again. It is brilliant. 👍

Such a classic! I’ve loved this movie since I was a little kid. I’m 36 now, but when I was 9 years old I did an ice skating routine to the Jaws theme song. I was dressed in blue sequins with a shark fin and my prop was a small inflatable raft with a manakin in it dressed as a fisherman (complete with hat and pole). The ‘fisherman’ had his leg hanging over the side, and at the peak of the song I swooped by and snatched his leg right off. The leg was stuffed with blood red fabric and I finished the routine carrying it around the rink like a trophy. I guess the fabric, which looked fake enough up close, was quite realistic from the stands 😅 I got first place though!

This is the reason (since the late '70s) I have so much phobia about swimming in the ocean. It has even caused me insecurity about fresh water lakes... or any water that I can't see through (deep water). Yes, I know that is illogical, but when you're dealing with a fear or a phobia, logic doesn't seem to win.

The villain in this movie isn't the shark it's the mayor, and I hold to that. I mean I understand a small town could suffer big if the tourist money stops, but that is nothing compared to 1 life lost. Good old Ben Gardner... always delivers. Shoshana's face right before the "we're going to need a bigger boat" line was priceless. That line is said to be improvised but it is a classic. And this movie still holds up. Don't get me wrong there places it shows its age but... your reaction shows it still has what it takes. Quint was "obsessed" but he was the expert. When he dies and it is just the chief left on the boat...

You should definitely watch the documentary about the making of this movie. Pretty unbelievable. That part where they investigate that wrecked boat and the guys head pops out - Spielberg thought he could get one more good scream from the audience so they filmed that in a swimming pool with milk added. This movie almost ruined his entire career. The fact that he insisted on shooting this movie on the actual ocean instead of a movie lot was unheard of before. And so many times he was almost done in by that. And that second kid pretending to be a shark is now like the mayor or something of Martha's Vineyard where this was shot. And this movie ended up being out on the big screen for like a year. Enjoyed watching it again with you both.

$10,000 would be worth nearly $56,000 today. The script originally had a lot more scenes with the shark. But because it was continually breaking down they went through extensive rewrites and everyone agrees it's better this way. The problem with the shark turned out to be the electronic controls. They worked fine in fresh water but shorted out in saltwater. The solution was to switch them out to hydraulics. The jump scare with Ben Gardner's head was an added scene and filmed in the editor Verna Fields' swimming pool, with milk added to make the water cloudy.
