We Went Half Way Across the Country for Malaysian Food!

Iris and I needed Malaysian food!? We couldn’t find any in Richmond so we did the next logical thing: we fly to Texas, rented a car, drove a few hours, and ate at Pappa Rich. If you are Malaysia you know what Pappa Rich is. If you do not, it is a chain restaurant from Malaysia serving, well, Malaysian food! We have mad mixed success before finding “authentic” Malaysian food here in the States. Will we be successful at Pappa Rich? Watch and find out!

Seriously though, I think that stuff would do great in an American city. I always told my Malaysian chef friend that if she came to America to be the face of my food truck, we could make a lot of money selling roti canai to drunk hipsters. Make it gluten free and make a killing

@@kcheise I think that is a good idea.. Roti canai n roti john, satay and ramli burger should do.. You could make lot of money with only that menu.. Kaya toast and apam balik (peanut pancake) would be hit too..

Wow! Truly impressed with your Bahasa! I was drooling watching you both eating Malaysian food! I am Malaysian (originally from Melaka) living in the suburb of LA for 30+ years! My favorite is CKT! Btw, you can still make a version of it quite successfully at home if you can find the flat noodles! Or make the noodles from scratch….😜

Not sure about how easy it is to find the ingredients, but I'd say learning and mastering how to cook some of these dishes would really do those cravings a good deal. Hell, even making simple sambal from blending shallots, garlic and dried chillis together cooked with tamarine water would be a base for a lot of dishes. Otherwise something simple like just meat with turmeric and salt for ayam/daging goreng kunyit. Actually kinda helped to cure the homesickness when I was overseas.

Just came across your channel. I don't know you but am sure you have stayed in Malaysia before. Well I was dumbfounded was that for real that craving for food can make some people do crazy things. Come back to Malaysia then.

Ha yeah I miss Malaysian food a lot. A huge amount, but I would not fly across the country for it. We are only two hours south of Washington DC. If I am feeling truly desperate, there are a few places there to get Malaysian food

I hope they love Malaysia as much as we did and still do. We miss it a lot. We lived there for 5 years, so it did feel like it was time to come back to America. We have a general plan to visit at least every two years...maybe more. We are both teachers and in America that means we have June, July, and some of August off from work. We are already planning to return next summer!

@@izounokuda5461 Ya very huge. We always told our Malaysian friends this and they never believed me. It took us 6 hours (no traffic) to drive from KL to Georgetown. If I drive six hours in my home state, NY, I would still be in NY probably. My kampung is 8 hours from NYC. Right now I live in Virginia, and am only 7 hours from NYC. I used to live in New Hampshire. 9 hours from my kampung. But only 6 hours from NYC. Ha...my point is, USA is huge! AND most of it, the western part especially, is empty!
