When I was a kid growing up in NJ, before most shows had rush and lotteries, my mom and I would sometimes go into the city just "to see a show" without having a specific show in mind, and just go to TKTS to see what they had available for cheap. (The first show that I remember having rush was Rent, and at first, that was only for students. I can't remember exactly when lotteries started, but I think around 2005 or so?)

Also, in your list of places you may have seen the Bethesda Fountain, it's also in the baptism scene in the movie of Godspell.

I had so many friends who did the Rent rush line. They were standing tickets in the back.

Finally got to watch this today as I am also getting ready to pack and finish out my trip across the pond (just the other way around, lol). I love these and can't wait for more stagey trip vlogs! It was lovely to meet you at MickeyJoTheatre LIVE last night! Hopefully see you around the US on your next trip, or possibly on my next West End trip, since I'm already excited to return for more amazing theatre over here. Cheers!!

@@MickeyJoTheatre Uh...HELL YEAH! As I said, it was one of the best ORIGINAL pieces of American Theatre I have seen in a long time! This better SWEEP the Tonys! I cannot believe I am saying this but I am now rooting for them to win Best Score. Those songs are so unbelievably good!

I have a little bit more of a cynical view of the buzz around Stereophonic. I enjoyed it (though it was very long), but I think it's appealing to people who like music but not *musicals* (in the traditional choreography and jazz hands sense). It's very good, but the pessimist in me senses a note of snobbery in some of the praise for this show, and I can't help but wonder if it would be getting the same type of response if it was called a musical (which it easily could be).
@corduroylanes
@corduroylanes 2 ай бұрын
@@ThexImperfectionist I agree with the thought that the response for the show would be as positive if it was called a musical. If it was to be called a musical that would be false advertising since it strays pretty far from typical musical conventions with all of the music being diegetic. Having all of the songs be diegetic makes Stereophonic resemble prestige film more than traditonal musical theatre - which brings its own set of fans and expectations from the artform. Couple that with our worlds strange fascination with the inner workings of Rumors era Fleetwood Mac and you have more eyes on this play than some of the other stuff playing on Broadway currently. I'm sure if Stereophonic was reworked to have more traditionally non-diegetic music it would also be praised pretty well. However, in its current state its pulling in film bros, indieheads and Fleetwood Mac stans to Broadway.

I've used TKTS on multiple visits to NYC. There is one principle reason I use this, instead of Rush/lottery. My wife and I seldom go to NYC with any singular show in mind. Lining up for one particular theatre would limit our options if they sell out. By lining up at TKTS, I have multiple options, and there's always something worth seeing. I do like how the roof of the booth forms a seating/waiting area. It allows the line to be less crowded, only one member of a party has to que up. Also, as much as I enjoy theater, it's not the only thing I do when I travel, I can schedule available shows around other sight seeing.

So glad you guys got to see Teeth! I wish Dead Outlaw comes back in some form as well. With these 2, and Lonely Few which I saw yesterday and loved, and Terce and Connectors, and the now Broadway show Illinoise, Off-Broadway musicals this past season have been firing on all cylinders! Edit: Just remembered there was also Buena Vista Social Club, which was not Teeth/Dead Outlaw/Lonely Few level, but still very enjoyable and will be on Broadway soon. And Hell's Kitchen, and Days of Wine and Roses were also Off-Broadway not long ago.

Looking forward to seeing review videos of all the shows you saw. (I think you've got 16 more to go?!) BTW: Personally, I always prefer a Partial view front Orchestra seat to a Full view rear Mezzanine or Balcony. You only wind up missing things happening on the far side of the stage and have the advantage of seeing expressions & other details much better.

Rush prices are lower but I personally put a lot of value on not having to get up so early and stand in line so long! So TKTS can be considered the better deal in that light.

@@hollymcl That's why online ticket lotteries are the best deal of all. Of course, if you don't live in NYC you can't bank on them / plan ahead. But as a native/local, I enter all the time. They're great!

Illinoise fascinates me . As a Brit who isnt familiar with Sufjan Stevens and his work (am wondering if he's bigger in the US) am intrigued to think who would think of opening a dance show based on this work on Broadway. The St James is relatively intimate though still quite large and if a show like Spamalot with popular casting of large names and a known sizeable fan base of Monty Python closed early and couldn't sell tickets, am curious how this will fare.
