As someone who sometimes tables at artist alleys and does live watercolor paintings for people- I can tell you he was probably having a BLAST. It is so fun and energizing to be creative around a lively but enthused and respectful group. I wish I could watch him work a little and ask a few questions about his tools and techniques. What a cool opportunity for attendees!

It's true that new Warhammer is lacking that weird, whimsical side that made the original games so attractive. Those old minis may not be as slick as the new releases, but they make up for that in character, humour and downright oddness. It looked like such a glorious time super Suggs and you've captured the excitement of BOYL so well. I'm down for next year now!

Nothing beats hand sculpted minis by a named sculptor with a distinct and recognisable style. You don't need to be told a Kev Adams, Gary Morley, Trish-not-Morrison-anymore, or Perry sculpt is what it is. The personality of the sculptor shines through.

Yeah. Some realy stick out. Sassy nurgling. The chaos sorcerers familiaries. Slaanesh harp made out of flesh.... might not be whimsy. But has a gruesome charm. I play Sisters of Battle. And hands down, the best looking unit is the ridicolous Exorcist tank. I want more like it! The Castigator is... fine. But boring. Compared to Exorcist or the stained glass Immolator

Yeah, I really miss the quirky offbeat style of those vintage greenskins that look like they crawled out of a Brian Froud illustration, or the utterly unhinged early Chaos stuff. Plus the satirical edge of Rogue Trader-era 40K, where the influence of 2000AD was very apparent. Everything's a lot more uniform and consistent these days, which is good if you like that sort of thing I suppose.

Old metal minis were accessible in ways that modern stuff just can't match. As proven in this video, a talented group could sculpt and cast minis for sale in a very short period of time with minimal equipment. This made them cheap to buy and allowed the designers a lot of room for whimsy, so all sorts of silliness made it to the market. 3D printing is allowing for a bit of a renaissance of this, though not so much for the young hobbyist. Most 12 year olds can't just buy and run a 3D printer, but they could buy a lead mini from a shop with pocket money back in the day. Late 80's early 90's were such a golden age of fantastic minis that were really affordable, even for a young, mostly broke me.

Big events tend to be about drumming up business (creating hype for new product). It seems this event was more about the joy and love of gaming (i.e. why we got into this hobby in the first place). Both have their place. The nostalgia of playing older games can bring back the delight of being 'fresh' in the hobby. Seeing new releases can inspire you to keep going. I'm glad you had a wonderful birthday, and hope it inspires you to keep doing what you're doing... :)

Fully understand what you mean. Modern Warhammer feels as though it is aimed towards perfectly painted miniatures that have to be painted a specific way and you can only build them a specific way otherwise they are illegal and you can’t put a certain weapon on a certain model. The reason I fell in love with it originally was because i could spend my Saturdays at my local store painting something however I wanted. Games were wacky and not serious. I miss those times

I haven't seen John Blanche in years, makes me realise how much we have changed, kinda feeling old now tbh, I remember him being a young, dark haired biker looking dude, but oddly clean shaven back in the day, he would often turn up at new store openings, or events, I get the impression he didn't like the direction GW took after Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone sold it, Its great to see him back in his favourite environment, it seems like BOYL islike the old GW, where it was about the hobby being for hobbyists, not shareholders, and being as creative and expressive, and artistic as you want to be, it was Johns odd inquisition and mechanicus models, which were always heavily converted, and his use of oil paints, especially in washes, that inspired my entire painting and modelling style, even to this day.

Having been involved with miniatures since the early 90's, having gone to local cons for years, and been part of a gaming group a long time that played whatever silly fun games that came along, and been removed from that environment, I really miss it. The local con died. Our gaming group broke up and moved due to life and other reasons. And most miniatures people I meet these days are very serious, meta driven, tournament folks. That's all well and good. But I miss the beer and pretzels sort of gaming and hobbying I used to be involved in. Fun stuff for fun's sake. I'd love to go to BOYL one day. From all I have seen it's the sort of environment that I miss. Traveling to the UK is not an option for me right now though. Thank you for sharing this. It made me smile to see people doing stuff like this and having an amazing time even though they're just in a big tent in a rain storm.

What an awesome event - your bubbly personality and infectious enthusiasm made your coverage so much better. Next year, I’d love to see a much longer video of the event and coverage of games -(although I know this would be a lot of work and your enjoyment of such a fun event would suffer, so forget that idea). This video seemed like it only lasted a couple of minutes, so I watched it several times and thoroughly enjoyed each one - great work. I still have my original Space Marines, Orcs and Gretchen from more than 20 years ago and they are still engaging in skirmishes in my retirement (although its getting harder to find games for “Old” Warhammer these days). Love your work 👍😃🇦🇺

I feel that it's because things were hand crafted, and so building these things was a *deliberate* act. It took time, so people used that time to do it in a way they would be proud of. Modern CG aided sculpting (and special effects) are just a "get it done fast" thing where they meet a minimum standard (admittedly, sometimes that standard is fairly high) and move on to the next things. And the result is that everything looks the same, because they meet that standard and put in no further effort to make it memorable.

One of these days, I'll get to make the great pilgrimage to this fantastic looking event, hopefully before I'm too old to carry a case full of lead figures.....

This is a great example of what I love about the English countryside / areas away from the cities. People just living and going about their days amidst very old/ancient buildings, towns/etc. Makes my old archeologist @$$ smile!

Your videos are really inspiring me to tackle that pile of unfinished tabletop minis and paint them just for fun- even my long neglected chaos space marines someday. Thank you for this. I hope I'll have the space for it soon and I hope you'll keep going with your channel.
