Coming to Aotearoa New Zealand cinemas August 22. Opening Night of Whānau Mārama New Zealand International Film Festival.
www.weweredangerous.com
Screening at Sydney, Melbourne and Perth Film Festivals. Stay tuned for other release dates!
WE WERE DANGEROUS is a powerful story of female friendship, from director Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu, winner of the SXSW Special Jury Award for Filmmaking.
In 1954 New Zealand Nellie and Daisy attempt to escape an institution for delinquent girls, in 1950s New Zealand, however not only are they caught, it triggers a relocation to a facility on a remote island. The duo become a trio as well-to-do Lou joins them, and life on the island takes shape under the command of devout Matron. The trio rail against the system, dubious of the benevolence of the bible and taking refuge in their blossoming friendship. It’s hard to reform girls who don’t believe they need reforming. However, a sense of doom settles in when experimental forms of punishment take place in the dead of night. Nellie and Daisy plot rebellion, but unexpectedly find themselves at odds with Lou, who is afraid to break the rules.
Starring Erana James, Rima Te Wiata, Nathalie Morris & Manaia Hall

In Denmark from 1923-1961 there was a home/clinic on an island for "morally defective" girls, that were infamous for how cruelly they treated the girls, which included forced sterilization.

Well, in China nowadays there are many reformation camps that are just as cruel for girls and even boys who "disobey" their parents, be "Internet or phone addict", have "low grades in school", many even starved or beaten to death.

The idea of social undesirable is weird. Everyone is society and some people don't present everyone's desire or opinion. Same this idea that some people are doomed by everyone is just ridiculous and a prejedice kind of thinking.

Also read about female rulers in history. They werent any better and some even worse. Its funny how they are now glorified in mass media and how people naively belive that the world would be a better place under women rule. 😂

Exciting for these young women to get roles to show their talent! The ensemble cast looks wonderful and the visuals. But, In terms of plot and character development It looks like every other Disney movie for youth - repressive society is holding down rebellious and free individuals who must resort to extraordinary means to break down the power of “the man” And once liberation happens, there is Paradise for all except the repressive head mistress who must die Or be confined to an insane asylum. How about a more three-dimensional character for the head mistress? How about the self-destruction that victims of early sexual abuse often find themselves engage in the age of these young women? How do they overcome trauma? With endemic drug problems, mental health crises, and suicide, worldwide, including in New Zealand among the poor and ingineous, I don’t think this plot is really what young people need anymore. If only the girls on the island discovered botany or Zoology or art skills or entrepreneurship to sell things to the mainland or tribal education from a secret text smuggled into the dorms! if they discovered ghosts and spirits on the island, it would be better than just another coming of age story of “liberation by rebellion”
@unkindestcut
@unkindestcut 26 күн бұрын
You can’t really gauge the dimensionality of the headmistress fro a 30 second trailer. And, rebellion against repression doesn’t need to result in drug addiction and sexual trauma, though that’s probably something “the Man” would teach. I like your ideas about tribal education and the supernatural, though.
