Hi guys, You always have a great relaxed vibe in your vids and I can feel that love you have for your Eva. Always hate dealing with underside mounting holes and or having to drill in the hull etc. Its the fear of a seal leaking that gets me. Per the Keel : Why not tackle the bit of rust on the Keel now ? Even though two years is pretty good, you're right there to sand and recoat again keeping it 'at bay'. Hopefully you can finish up without further delays. Have a great day !

Brett, that smell from the rudder is "styrene" . When you walk into a fiberglass shop it's the reason there is great ventilation systems. I would have been nice if you tried pressurizing the rudder with compressed air by opening a hole higher up and sticking an air nozzle in for a quick blow out. I don't think you have anything to worry about right now. Rudders are routinely wet, poor thing lives underwater.

Instead of replacing chain send it out for re galvinized about 1/5 the price of new chain and adds years. Drop the rudder and put a bead of 5200 where the shaft goes in ,beneteau 's are famous for stress cracking around there thus allowing water in.Want no rust on keel drill and tap for 2 anodes I used tear drop no rust in 5 years😊

Water is likely coming around the rudder post at the top of the rudder. Try Gflex sealant. I have 2 screws in the bottom of my rudder to drain. I can't seem to stop the intrusion. The fluid is is a mix of water and chemistry from the foam inside the rudder. The word 'potable' has a long O. Not like the O in pot. Should you spray zinc on bronze? Inducing galvanic action? Try 'propcoat spray.' You guys do an excellent job. One of my favs.

The through hull sensor is quite adequate with a slight tilt for the critical depths you need to navigate. Do the trig. A 10 degree tilt from horizontal only means 1.5% error. If you are in 10 feet of water, the sonar will read 10.15 feet. At 15 degrees, only 3.5% or 10.35 feet reading in 10 feet of water. At 20 degree off horizontal, the error would be a reading of 10.64 in 10 feet of water. The lowest swells in still air mean you cannot trust to get that close anyway. Good job.

Rudders taking on water is common, the challenge is it softens the core which over time will be a problem for the survey.. A little safety suggestion , you are holding your electric sander with both your feet in water not a good combination.

I used to own a Beneteau 473 for 12 yrs, water leaks into the rudder around the stainless rudder post on many of the models, I drilled a 1/4 hole into the bottom of the rudder and let it drain until I launched, then I plugged the hole with 5200, and used the same hole every year. Just fill the hole with 5200 and place a piece of masking tape over it to hold it in until cured.....Then launch. That rust on the keel is a bigger project, I had mine media blasted down to the cast iron, then coated with several coats of epoxy barrier coat, then re-faired, it was quite expensive, but never rusted again. keep up the good work, love your project boat. @11:04 My recommendation would be to be more drastic. You do not want water in an enclosed area. How much is absorbed in the foam? Please dry it thoroughly.🥺 @18:43 Maybe you should check the documentation for the margins. And realize a sailboat wil rarely be exactly vertical...😉🤣 @20:34 What I did with my cast iron keel years ago was pretty similar to what you did.😁 But I drilled and tapped 2 holes at each side, and put anodes on it with stainless steel bolts.🤓(Edit: Be sure to use a lube like copper ease for this.) (drilling and tapping in cast iron is a pain, I did it quite slow and with enough cutting oil.)🥵

As to the rudder, its better to use a vacuum pump going to a collection pot. And use vacuum plastic and tacky tape with some cloth or breather cloth inside. That will clear the water from inside of the rudder. And if there is a large void, you could vacuum draw in resin to displace the cavity that was filling with water.
@joes7166
@joes7166 Жыл бұрын
vacuum pump is a great idea. If one isn't available, use a squeeze bottle-like for mustard or ketchup with a spout- and inject acetone into the holes. Acetone displaced water and evaporates quickly. Vacuum would work better to pull some resin into the void.

I noticed before your were pressure washing your anchor chain that it had some rust, but not too bad. If it doesn't come off too well check and see if there is a shop that can sandblast it. It will take all the rust off no problem and if there are any areas that are really bad they will be revealed right away. Chain can be repaired if need be.

By itself, the water in the rudder won't hurt anything. However, if it is in contact with the stainless steel ribs where they connect to the rudder post, it will start to breakdown the SS, particularly at the welds where micro cracks form and electrolysis between the SS and the weld takes place. SS gets its resistance from exposure to air, which allows the formation of a chromium oxide layer. If it is buried inside the rudder and kept continuously wet with salt water and no oxygen, rust can begin to form. We had the same problem. Probably drained several gallons of water out. Had to completely strip off all fiberglass and foam coring and dry it all completely and then rebuild the rudder form. It was very important to seal the post area so water can't migrate in.
@jackdbur

For your chain you can get a 2 pack industrial zinc coating that will stop the corrosion, for a temp fix use coldgal spray spraycans after hitting it with rust converter,the best is if you can get your anchor chain regalvanised, for repairs to your rudder you will get better results by adding 1/4" chopped fiberglass to your thickened epoxy make it extra thick. You could also use a big syringe to pump some epoxy into the holes to rebond the skin to the foam.

Trick for getting the sensor housing "level" would be to invert it, having designated a fore an aft then drop it down from inboard through the hull, then mark the tube along the hull, cut to fit, sand smooth.

You should consult with someone who knows more than us about that rudder, if there was water in there that means there are voids, voids lead to flexing, and flexing can lead to catastrophic failure. I don’t know how long ago you found this problem or if you put the boat back in the water by now but the last thing you need is a broken rudder in a storm.
@BrianNavalinsky
@BrianNavalinsky Жыл бұрын
Probably separation at the rear of the rudder due to freezing in Massachusetts. If the core is saturated, you will eventually have to address it. I would love to see a larger rudder on that size of boat. You aren't racing it, but you still want good control. Good luck.

While the angle of the thru-hull isn't much, the induced error will get worse with distance from the hull. I suppose you could argue that the deeper the water, the more room you have for error. But it is something to consider.

To keep the prop from collecting hitchhikers coat it with a some lanolin or Penaten (you can probably get both at the drugstore), it also protects against galvanic loss. Also,if you can’t get nylon instead of SS screws for the anode, coat the SS screws with a liberal blob of lanolin to reduce the galvanic reaction between the SS and the anode.

Water inside the rudder is not a problem (assuming the stock & wings are s/s). Losing the whole anode IS a problem. If it’s been gone a while you may have galvanic corrosion in your seacocks or any metal in touch with the salt water. That could be a BIG problem. The anode could have gone prematurely if you’ve been moored in a marina with lots of stray currents in the water. Replace it and check it frequently: if going fast replace it regularly and find the source of the stray current. I guess your new B&G log fitting will be removable, while at sea, for maintenence. I remove mine whenever the boat’s not used for a while - to minimize growth of barnacles on the log: just unscrew the top fitting, pull the log out (a flap will reduce water ingress to not much), and install the top cap. Did you really say you like to have lots of holes in the hull? Surely not! Minimum no. of holes - as every one can sink you. And keep a plan of them by the chart table: one day when water’s rising in the bilge and (inevitably) it’s dark, you’ll need to check them all very quickly. In such a panic it’s easy to miss one.

loosing the propeller anode is a bigger issue but it could be you used stainless bolts. The most common cause of the prop anode loss is that you are using stainless steel bolts. These promote a galvanic reaction that corrodes the zinc in the immediate area of the bolt heads and the anode is lost rapidly. Recently nylon bolts have become available for these props

Be careful with the water in the rudder. Could be a sign of delamination and cause instability

Can you guys buy some zinc coating kits, and do the chain in sections while on the boat, you will need to supply DC and have a safe chemical solution. Keep your original chain forever.

Hi Brett and Jade! Since you've been living off grid for such a long time I'm very curious about your solarpanel setup. I'm rebuilding a schooner with my dad, and we have to buy new panels soon. I believe you use flexible solarpanels? Have you ever had any problems with them in the past? One of your loyal subscribers mentioned I should be talking to you, and I'm hooked immediately. Thanks for making brilliant vids!

Another great video. Shouted y'all out to the wandering Hillbilly. Not the same, but still great. Nice work getting to it with the patch work in your next video and overall maintenance. Stay safe and happy sailing ✌from the prairies of 🇨🇦.

What brand of catamaran is that yellow one in the yard? It looks like the hulls are aluminum.

i am an RVer and watch your channel for the adventure. cleaning and maintenance is the same with the RB and with the same degree of worry as with a boat.

I had this problem often. I used a vacuum to suck the water out which really worked well. I was worried as I stored my boat in freezing temps on Lake Superior an d was concerned about cracking with the freezing and thawing process.

Hey y'all, not sure if this helps, but I have the same boat. I also have B&G nav with the fwd scan. Dont put too much trust into the fwd scan. Fwd speed has everything to do with how quickly you will overrun your info. I learned the hard way...yikes. I love the wind rose feature tho.. Love watching your channel

A few years ago , i decided to take a break in my job for two and a half years and go sailing in the Caribbeans with my spouse. We bought a 44 foot long sailboat and sailed from St Marteen to Grenada during 2 years. I mainly enjoy it even if living on a sailboat is not so easy. A sailboat needs a lot of maintenance, there is always a long to do list with the hull, the sails, the motor, the mast, the kell, the rudder and many other things, and in these islands it's not always easy to find the people and the materials we needed. We were lucky not to have major incident, including hurricanes, but owning a boat of this size is almost a full time project if you want to really care about it. And, of course, it costs a lot of money because everything is so expansive. Two years was a good period, i could probably stayed longer, but i am not sure i would have stayed for ever. The life style is a little rough , and during this 2 years we get older of maybe at least 5 years ! The sun, the wind, the salt and the lake of comfort with very few water and electricity are the main causes. And i am not sure that after several years you are still enjoying the Caribbeans as when you just arrived. You need to go back in more civilized towns to be able to enjoy it again. I didn't quit my job because we needed revenues to live and we didn't have any other major income. Apparently you can live with your KZfaq channel income, but you have to think a little further. You have no guarantee that it will last for ever, and maybe one day you will be tired of the boat life. I really encourage you to keep your pilot job and to alternate periods of work as pilot with sailing periods. You could probably manage to do both by working as a pilot between the numerous Caribbean islands. You have to think also about your retirement even you are still young. I wish you the best and good luck .

i was thinking the same. being a pilot is not some thing you stop and start again. but i think they have some savings and youtube income. 355k subscribers is pretty good.

There is always water inside rudders of this type. It enters from the top along the rudder shaft. You could make a plug at the bottom that can be removed to drain the rudder. That could be smart if storing on land during freezing temperatures.

The bottom of your rudder is around two meters deep in the water which means some pressure already. It may well be that your rudder is at least partly or worst case completely soaked. Depending on the quality of stock and wings (the latter is where the two halves of the rudder are mounted on) you have a serious problem if the wings disconnect from the stock any time in the future. You should talk to the boatyard or someone who has profound knowledge about your boat. Since the boat builders often use different techniques and/or materials across their production lines it is not sufficient to know that e.g. in a 42 footer of your brand (Jeanneau ?) a certain method was used to build the rudder.
