"WE WERE THE RAILWAY CHILDREN",COMPOSED AND SUNG BY TERRY MORRIS, LYRICS BY CAROLYN MARTIN,VIDEO BY FRED DEATKER, IS A SPECIAL DEDICATION TO ALL OUR ANGLO INDIANS WHO RAN THE INDIAN RAILWAYS. THIS SONG WILL TAKE YOU DOWN MEMORY LANE.
We were the Railway Children
1.
We were the Railway Children
Our Daddy's did us proud
They ran the Indian Railways
Mumbai & Cal to Oudh
Mum stayed at home with us children
She kept the home fires burning bright
Pa went on line in the early morn(ing) and
Came home late at night.
2.
I wanna be a Steam train driver
Just like my Daddy used to be
Paan, Bidi, Cigarettes sound so familiar to me.
Garam, garam Caapee
Sweet condensed milk tea
Aare Baba have some stick jaw toffee
or Lonavla Chickee.
Chorus:
We hear the whistle blowing as uncle
As an extra cloud of steam puffs up
High into the sky
Uncle Noel's the Station Master
as the train pulls in real slow
And our Budda works the signals
Telling them which way to go.
3.
We were the Railway Children living in the Railway Colony
and, went to the Railway school called Oak Grove
In the hills of Jharipani
The students came from all over this vast and
and beauteous land
Asansol, Pune, New Delhi and even from Jharkand
4
Let's not forget the “Institute”
The dance parties to which we'd go
The little kiddies Christmas Tree
Sport Day, Fancy Dress, the Talent Show.
Come around December 31 with the ayah we would stay
As mum and dad dressed to the nine's to dance the night away.
5
Those railways tracks did clickety clack across
India far n wide
The WooWoo of the whistle heard around the country side
So many Happy memories chase around my mind
When we were the Railway children
…...Another place ….. another time.

Beautiful and hearbreaking. The Anglo-Indians, abandoned by the British and struggling to find prosperity in India or abroad, but homesick for India for the rest of their lives. They deserved a much better deal!!!

Great song ! My brothers and I were Railway children too who lived in the Railway Colony, wherever my Dad got posted. We have studied in several Railway Schools, at Olavacode (now Palghat), at Golden Rock, at Hubli, at Madras (now Chennai)and Madurai too. We loved the Railway Institute and the Railway Clubs in some of these places. We have several friends who were Railway children too and many of them Anglo Indians. It is a great bond that Railway children share. And yes, even now I take every opportunity I get to travel on the Indian Railways !

The days of steam are history....like the 'original' Anglo Indians. There was no place left on the Railways for old workers like my father, who faced antagonism and discrimination from Officials and other staff in the 1960s. There was hardly any option left for AI workers other than immigration. Now over 4,000 people exit India daily!!

Hi Terry, I simply love your song and so special as my Papaji went to Oak Grove with his brothers and some old Oak Grovians too whom I got to know; including the Ross brothers who attended from 1920 to 1935. Beryl Brewster's Rock fame. My family were principally Allahabad and Asansol, Great Grandfather became a train driver for most of his working life after surviving at The Residency in Lucknow during 1857 Mutiny and Grandfather Station Master. And yes, I was bought up with 'ek piali chai' every morning, made with condensed milk which was rather grand. Ive just loaded a memorial documentary for our family killed in Cawnpore, that we have made this year after yet another trip to India to research. Can click my site if you want and should take you there. Warmest regards - Mark Probett (new Zealand)

GREAT DAYS !!! We grew up in the Railway colony at Byculla while my Father was an A grade driver in Central Railway, who went through all the trains beginning from the Steam Engines. The Railway Institute was the best place where we danced and partied in Happy times. Life was Honest, fun and carefree. The Railway people worked HARD and were so dedicated to their jobs. So many lovely friends we had, people from all cultures living as one family. Thank you for the song, and the nostalgic memories.

Beautiful song. Brought back memories of where I grew up. It was a very different and I think, better world then. Though my parents were not in the railways, we lived just off the railway officers quarters and had the best of both worlds. Angloindians were a smart, fun loving community and going to the railway institute for the christmas functions was always a time of fun and enjoyment.

Vow - this really brought back many memories as my Dad spent 42 years with the North-Eastern Railway and yes, we were constantly on the move with his many transfers with that came going to various Convent Schools....my Dad always took us on the engine and explained how it worked, how he used to heat up his food on the coal fires where he also made his tea! We were always treated so "special" - being an Anglo-Indian family....I am so proud of my heritage and the way we were brought up so when our family immigrated to Canada - we found it easy to adjust, but will never forget being part of the "RAILWAY CHILDREN" and the fun we had! God Bless the Anglo-Indians

Brilliant! My father joined the Madras & Southern Mahratta (M&SM) Railway back in 1934 the same year I was born. During the years my father was frequently posted to various stations from Poona to Gadag (My teacher was Ms. Belisha at the Anglo Indian School), Guntakal, Bellary, Gooty, Madras (Perumbur Rly Colony), etc. But the most memorable was at Bitragunta the largest Loco shed of a horseshoe type called the “Round House” which had a capacity of holding 59 locos of XP, XG, WP, WG etc. My first schooling was at The Anglo India school (Miss Flute, a very pretty girl was my teacher) and we lived in a bungalow in the Railway colony which would be 99% Anglo Indians. We had very good friends who would visit us. Very fond memories; I am 82 years old now. Thank you.

A song by the unique Anglo Indian Railway community . Very nostalgic. Thangacherry in Kollam town was home to so many of them who could sing & dance so well. Many have left India for greener pastures leaving behind great memories of a glorious past. Only a few remain. I remember with love Carlton Harris, the most handsome guy & a great body builder. He was the inspiration to so many movie stars & body builders . Famous actress Sheela was the daughter of Railway guard from the Anglo Idian community . Ceaser Fernandez a National level boxer, Ben Morris the fire brand Congress union leader very close to top leadership , A Relative of my spouse, Pamman ( brother of grandma) ( padmanabha Menon), CWS in western Railway & president of Bombay Malayalam Samajam of his time had written several popular novels touching the lives of the great Anglo Indian community . Many popular films were adaptation of his novels . One of the novels was the subject of a blockbuster Malayalam film Chattakari about a Railway Engine driver & his family . It was also the subject of one of the most famous film in Hindi .. Julie ... Very nostalgic May God bless the fun loving happy people who made life so wonderful, diverse & beautiful.

When I heard this song and saw the photo montage my whole childhood went through my mind and evoked emotions that I didn't know existed! I remember the Railway Club where we had sports for kids, Christmas parties and yes our parents did go for the New Year's Eve party although they didn't know how to dance! I wish my Dad were alive so that I could play this for him. We didn't go to Oak Grove, Jharipani but of course we knew about it. Both my siblings married children of railway officers as well. I truly loved this song. It brought tears to my eyes. Anywhere in India if one lived in a Railway Colony there was so much similarity that one feels immediately at home.

How right you are. My dad was Station Master at Gorakhpur. U.P. So, we were 'railway children' too.

My maternal grandfather Anglo-Indian. He was a railway man named George Arthur Francis who lived in Malaysia, married my grandmother who was from Sabah, and then moved to Singapore sometime before WW2. For some reason he broke away from his family and we sadly know nothing of his history. I wonder if he is related to any of these railway families.

My rapport and interaction with them started as early.in childhood days in Pudupet Presentation.Convent leading to St Mary's A l high school G T .leading to Loyola college where we kept ourselves in a group having a feeling superior to those who came from Tamil Medium schools. Finally continued to my workplace at SBI CHENNAI but it did not end there . My relationship.continued in dad's toys shop 'BON MARCHE' at MooreMarket.especiallyduring Christmas season when they all flocked there to buy Christmas Toys as gifts to their children.we had steady stream of customers. One Mr Wilde and Mr Star were regular customers buying gifts for their Railway Christmas Tree in Hubli .On Sundays when we packed the goods for them they relaxed themselves punting at Guindy Race Course J C MORAL .
