SpongeBob SquarePants had a previous name of SpongeBoy, with his original Nickelodeon show being called SpongeBoy Ahoy. Why did it go from SpongeBoy to SpongeBob? A well-known story reveals that it's because a mop was named SpongeBoy. Turns out, that's completely wrong.
Stephen Hillenburg had intended SpongeBoy Ahoy to be the final title of his Nicktoon, until someone else was using the name SpongeBoy. In a recent video from KZfaq creator Kid Leaves Stoop, we discover the truth behind SpongeBob SquarePants' origins, and what we had wrong for so many years.

Is crazy how Spongebob has more then 20 years and he's still relevant like it came out yesterday (specially because the franchise peaked a long time ago), most of the cartoons came out at the same time didnt had this luck

Honestly, the mop story didn't even make sense when I thought about it. Trademarks only apply within product categories. If a mop held the trademark for Spongeboy, that would only mean other cleaning products couldnt be named Spongeboy. Television characters would be unaffected. Seeing that there were actually comics made to promote Spongeboy pencils makes the story feel much more logical.

I remember Hillenburg himself saying on a SpongeBob DVD extra (either the original film from 2004 or one of the early season releases) that the reason they changed the name was because another character was already called SpongeBob, something to the extent of "we really wanted to call him SpongeBoy, but there already was a SpongeBoy, so someone suggested "what about Sponge-Bob?" and that stuck." I always assumed it was something like this and have never heard the mop explanation. Anyone remember that clip?

Unpopular opinion: Season 5-8 isn’t that terrible😭 Sure it has more bad episodes and isn’t up to par to seasons 1-4, but it also had some gems as well

There's a character called Spongeboy in Bob Burden's comic book series Flaming Carrot (which was the source material for the 1999 film Mystery Men). I always thought that was why Hillenburg's character was renamed SpongeBob.

I remember searching up Spongebob on my cousin's computer and just looking at everything and I saw that the name of the show was supposed to be "Spongeboy Ahoy!" like we all know, but I was also told that the show was supposed to air on Adult Swim and that he would've been a green sponge and that Spongeboy and Patrick (if that was supposed to be his name) were supposed to be gay, but there was another show or something like that named Spongeboy and the name was changed to Spongebob and they marketed the show to children as the Spongebob we know now. Yeah, I have no clue where that came from, that was back in like, 2017-2019
