I moved back to Kansas after being away for 30 years and am a little surprised at how modern most of the farms have become. Less surprising is that the Mennonites are very well set up. These folks work hard and know how to invest in their community and make it prosper in the modern world.

I'm in rural Virginia, and we have several Mennonite communities here. The work they do is incredible, prices reasonable.they are having the same struggles as the rest of the farming world, inflation, so forth, but they are absolutely fair in their prices. The communities by us, at least.

What kind of hay ( alfalfa, timothy etc.)do you grow? We have a portable ice maker because in fridge just quit and hubby doesn't want to fool with it. Large zucchini cut in half, core it out, fill with Italian sausage, onions and peppers, cover with spaghetti, marinara or pasta sauce. Bake in oven covered with foil 45 min - 1 hour. Remove foil, sprinkle cheese on and place back in oven until cheese is melted how you like. Yummy!

Love horses, used to drive horse and carriage at The Westin Hotel in Kauai, Hawaii. We had Clydesdales, Belgians & Percherons. My assigned horse was a 3 year old Belgian gelding named Mike 40, he was the best. But I did drive the other breeds as well. Still miss them but now in my 60's with health problems. Great memories! I moved there from St. Louis, MO after my sister won a free trip and took me with her. I now live in Milton FL and going to the Homestead Meet-up in Santa Rosa in October. From the land of baseball bat sized zucchini, the 8ne you picked has just made it to "large" size. Yes, the larger zucchini make for better breaded and fried, or breaded and BBQ'd zucchini; slice in 1/2"-3/4" medallions across the zucchini. Also the bigger zucchini work better for 1/2" or so cubes to be added to all sorts of dishes. And, they are all the easier to holdmin to when shredding for baking, adding to soups including canned soups, adding to tomato dishes like spaghetti sauce, BBQ sauce, etc...

Fun too watch how they cut and bale hay in different parts of the country. I grew up in California central Coast, an only saw the rectangle shaped bales. The Zucchini looks great , carrot zucchini comes into mind.
@Growmap
@Growmap 2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of different sizes and shapes of bales. California usually 3 wire 100-120 lbs. Texas 2 wire 55-65 lbs. Giant square bales. Round bales used to be larger (5x6 were the most common). Now they're smaller to fit better on trailers only 4x5). There is a lot more hay in a 5x6 than a 4x5. Also, they used to be tied with string which I like a whole lot better than the netwrap they use now. Terrible stuff - hard to remove from round bales if you have no equipment to lift them. Apparently, they can netwrap much faster than string tie which is why you almost can't find string tied bales anymore.

Love that the Amish go around the area for yall. The Amish by my hometown were allowed to use tractors and whatnot. They just weren't allowed to own them. Same with power tools and phones. So everything was rented or borrowed. And they also used horse and buggy for regular transportation. Kind of interesting. It was always fun to see their horse and buggies lined up in the Walmart parking lot and to pass them by on the road. And they were always the best, hardest, and fastest workers around. If you needed a job done quickly and correctly, they were the ones to go to.

🇦🇺I would take lots of photos and make photo albums for the foster children to take with them when they returned home. Things like riding bikes, camping, beach days, Church, outings and theme parks etc.

You’re blessed that they are able to do the haying for you. I can’t imagine how long it would take to do it by yourself.

Good Job, Cassie, I move our horses by myself from pasture to pasture. It is always best to stay calm for them & for saftey. Besides like you said, it makes it MUCH easier the next time & they know what to expect. I have trained our horses to walk thru the gate with me on the other side of the gate from them.

Brought back lots of great memories of help out in our family farm my grandparents had ..out in a little town called damar Kansas! Soon as we could drive at 14 with permit they would put us to work during harvest..wheat. and yes bailing hay too!! We still have the farm. My aunt bought it and now we bring our grandkids even to help !

When the Amish come next time, put a drone up to film them. It looked really cool to watch across the field but may look even better from above. Like a symphony as they move those tractors around or a waltz if you want to refer to dance. Amazing people doing amazing things. As always, thanks so much for the share & Cassie, you really can juggle your tasks of the day. Being a coach shows you really know how to play all positions when called upon.😊😊😊🌻🌻🌻🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

You are correct on the Amish. Our west side Amish use horse drawn hay mower, rake, n baler The ones on the east use tractors here in Michigan. They said cause one is Old order the other is new Order here in Michigan. They also process our chickens/turkeys for us for $3.00 a chicken, $5 a Turkey or duck

Here in Western NY we have a sizeable Amish population. They still use horses for most things but i know a couple sawmills that have payloaders for moving logs …. they park them at neighbor farms lol. They like cell phones too lol but usually only the older men have them

You can certainly eat the zucchini, just core out the large seeds. Slice the zucchini thinly and fry them after they have been covered in flour and dipped in beaten eggs loosen up the eggs with a little bit of water and back into the flour again. Salt and pepper while cooking. It is delicious. You can also dehydrate them or freeze dry them and throw them into soups. They will add a good mild flavor to the soup.

I guessed 50. So I was wrong! It amazes me that the rules for Amish depends on where they live . Stay cool in this midwest heatwave.

Don't leave the cubes in the tray, they will melt, especially with the heat & humdty cause it's not refrigerated. At least mine melt. I keep them in a large zip lock bag in the freezer or you could use a bowl or bin, I just don't have room for that. Love my ice maker, good luck!

Now is the time to get seeds and start planting again. Major food shortages are coming. If you can't do it yourself, find someone local and support what they're doing. Many will be going hungry the way things are going worldwide.
