The update you have all been asking for, sorry it has taken longer than expected. I like to be able to form a bit of a picture before sharing any vet issues with the world. Anyway, the good news is that Moose man is doing really well, and we are nearing having two more ponies to ride! Hope you enjoy guys, sorry for the very rough edit and chatty style, life has been BUSY!

You did this very intelligently. Waiting until 9 months is GREAT--so many people do it at 6, or even 5 months, which is really too soon. Sounds like the self-weaning was already starting on both sides and they will be OK. And moving the mares is certainly safest. Makes all the difference in the world to have 2 babies at once--being herd critters, it is very hard for foals to feel suddenly abandoned and alone, and having that known and loved pasture mate will allow them to get used to the new normal very quickly. I know it's a hard time, but so much better when you do it all right, as you have! 🙂

You have to listen to the mare/foal duo as well. I wanted to wean later on (my colt was 5 months and a half), but my mare just couldn’t take her kid’s shenanigans anymore. She didn’t even slow down when I took her to the trailer and she never looked back!! My colt was running around with his friend he didn’t even notice she was gone 😅 she was getting super annoyed with him and wouldn’t let him nurse as much, so she was ready to move on. It was the easiest answer smoothest weaning I ever see!

Why in the world would it cause controversy? Hopefully no one is daft enough to think that foals don’t need to be weaned. And goodness they are 9 months. You gave them more time than most! Nicely done.

Poor Moosey poppet! But so glad that he is doing so well and sounds like you picked the perfect time for weaning as at least that was stress free! And also, I agree with Hobbit - I want to see a Rich dressage lesson on Bear! Her dressage was always so good.

honestly that is the BEST response and behavior i have ever seen and from both sides, the mare moms and the baby foals. the mares were sighing sighs of relief lol which was a lovely moment and comical to say the least , and the foals looked ready for adventure where they were super calm and curious rather than anxious and worried. This was absolutely the best weening process i have ever seen where none of the animals were sad and crying but in fact super happy and relieved lol. i would say stupendous call on your part!! perfect even!

We had bits of old rusty metal resurface in our 25 acre house paddock turns out it had been used as rubbish pit by previous owners over the years . When we dug it out with the backhoe we found all sorts of goodies. Old glass bottles with marble stoppers, similar old jars with all manner of seeds , musket balls , remnants of an old car, all manner of bits of farming equipment, it was like a treasure box of time . Took 3 big truck loads to get rid of all the rubbish that came out of that pit haha 😛. Big accidents waiting to happen there , the jumping & dressage arenas where in that paddock- phew 😅

Weaning can be such a stressful event for everyone but Meg and Hobbit waited a good amount of time to see the mares starting their own weaning process before separating them. I worked on a yard where they had two 5 month old foals and weaned them by shutting them in stables with the top doors shut. It was just awful. I couldn't believe what was happening to those poor little babies. But megs ponies are always so happy and calm. She always does the best by them which I why I have followed her channel for the last 4 years. Glad to hear Moose is ok!❤

That's basically what I did when I weaned my foals (many years ago when I bred horses). Lead the mare and foal into the field. Let the foal go, who promptly trotted off with their pals. Immediately took the mare back out of the field, onto the trailer and drove to a yard about half a mile away. Worked really well and neither really missed the other until they were brought in that first night and suddenly realised the other wasn't there as usual.

So glad that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I know all of your horses get the very best care. It is those little punctures under a hairy pony that can cause so many problems. Thank goodness you and Hobs watch over them all like hawks. Glad the weaning went well and you are right! The mommas looked relived to be away from their demon spawn! Can’t wait to see Bear and Brynni (hope I spelling it right) are getting back into work. Make sure your Elphick Event Ponies neck strap is secure on Bear!

Most breeders wean the foals at 4 to 6 months, so 9, waww i'm really surprised. Fillies are calmer but colts can be ennoying. Once separeted for one month, they can be together in the herd. But mostly the colts stay with other colts from +/- same age. Many people who has one colt or one fillie, they bring them to a special breeding stable for young horses, and when the coltd have to much like a young stallion they're separeted from the fillies. In the netherlands there are dtables with more than 100 foals, and you have to be in time to have a place. Because in wintertime the weather is so bad that they can't go outside in the field😊

Very Good, Meg🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤ You made it through another typical breeding farm calamity 😂. I swear you could put horses in a rubber room and they will STILL find a way to hurt themselves 😂. You handled all that brilliantly! 👏 So...the 5 horses to work! Very good! Before all that gets into full swing, it will definitely help if you focus on doing 10 to15 min/day core workouts and some cardio. I know your body might be like mine and encourage you to NOT run at every chance it can make a statement 😂 so go easy and see what it says.😊 It has taken me much longer to return to formally working out thanks to the many old "minor" injuries telling me they happened😂❤❤❤. So honestly I think cycling might be the next step to give the ole lower back a break. And with all the natural concussion they comes onto the lower back as we ride, I am SURE your lower back will appreciate the break. I found i really enjoyed the 30 min bike rides which helped me just get into a rhythm and clear my head. Idk how safe it is to ride a bike on the country roads where you live. But if it isn't safe, getting a mountain bike and doing a bridle trail moght be worth considering. Once those workouts stsrt becoming a solid part of your routine, it will REALLY make a bigger difference than you can imagine in improving your strength and confidence.❤❤❤
