In World War II two weapons outgunned the rest. The German MG34 and it's update the 42. Belt fed these weapons guzzled ammo easily outgunning smaller capacity magazine based rivals.

The high rate of fire of the MG42 and its distinctive sound caused panic all troops from all countries who fought against the Germans in WW2, due to mutilations caused by it. The Americans had to create a manual with psychological instructions for official orientate the troops; however the fear of gun persisted to the end.

@mxblyxky
@mxblyxky 2 жыл бұрын
@@Legomax18 I don't know where it can be found; it can also be a reserved series of service orders; but the fact is that the US Army was keen to try to neutralize the negative effect of the sound caused by the high rate of fire of the MG42, as many soldiers did not move from their positions after hearing the bursts. It is known that one of the tactics used to decrease the fear of MG42 was to tell soldiers that the weapon was not efficient; but of course, the mutilated bodies of those who fell said otherwise. The fear of MG42 reached all allied nations. Even the soldiers of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force who fought the Germans up the mountain in Northern Italy remember very well the peculiar sound of their bursts.

@@mxblyxky Fascinating. There’s no limit to what one can learn about WWII. Sad that the firsthand accounts and word-of-mouth tales are growing exponentially more faint with each passing day, as the last of those guys and the Greatest Gen rapidly disappear. @@Legomax18 I know the style. It's the "Boy from Hollywood"! He got used to seeing in films and "documentaries" the heroic allies to win whenever they are angry to see their "heroes" discredited. Same with Sherman. The denial Hollywood boys were outraged to learn that the tank was a coffin on tracks in front of German armor. Only in recent years has this been revealed through the testimony of veterans. This vulnerability was covered up so as not to discourage the crews and not cause a scandal, as more than fifty thousand were produced. My boy is now doubting that the MG42 was a weapon that instilled terror, as this, for obvious reasons, was covered up during the war and remained so later. Do you know what a machine gun that fires 1200 rounds per minute does to a body? It can tear off arms, head and cuts the body like a chainsaw. That was the psychological effect on the soldiers who had to advance against her. The Reichfürer Himmler felt ill and had to withdraw as he watched a public demonstration in Prague of hostages being executed by on MG42 in reprisal for the killing of germans soldiers by guerrillas. Pieces of bodies and limbs were torn off with the hostages still alive.

MG42 is around today as the MG3 in 7,62 X 51mm Nato ammo. Spain produced a 5,56 X 45mm version of the M42. The only drawback was regular cleaning of the gun, because dirt and dust could jam the MG42. Now it is being replaced by a MG from HK.

To an extent, yes. But the MG34, with its very well structured (too "sleek and mechanised") parts and components need constant care from the elements - snow, cold, dirt, water, etc. that most needed to be disassembled often. It IS one of the best handheld weapons of WW2, at least before the introduction of the 42 and Stg 44 (both of which came too late for the Germans). Nevertheless, these are all a witness and proof of German engineering superiority.

+Firmus Piett Which Browning? There were literally 3 used during WW2. The watercooled M1917 was the most accurate HMG of the war in the 7.62 caliber, due to its weight and a sturdy tripod. The M1919 also benefitted from a tripod. The M2 HMG also made by Browning was a .50 BMG HMG that could double the range of the MG42. All 3 were made from solid steel parts. The MG42 was stamped steel with sights on the receiver and a barrel that detached. That alone does not spell accuracy.

The MG42 was a squad level weapon for a 13 man squad, not a company or platoon level weapon for every 80-250 soldiers like a browning. That's why the video compared it to the BAR and Bren which which was the Allied squad level weapon for every 12 men. The MG42 still exists in the MG3 and M60, so you know it's good.

just to clear things up, the mg42 and m2 browning were developed to suit 2 completely different doctrines. Therefore neither was really better. The m2 browning was meant as an antiaircraft and light anti vehicle weapon. It was not a general usage mg like the mg42. The soviet 12.7 dshk mg is a more realistic comparison. Furthermore as I said the mg42 was meant as a cheap general usage mg that could be used in infantry, antiaircraft, vehicle mounted, and static roles. It was not meant or used for taking out light vehicles. It had a better chance again ground attack aircraft but i cant say anything about its effectiveness in that role.

It's strange that both Germany and Japan were able to take on half of the world between them and even though they were completely defeated, within decades they were richer than most of the countries that had actually won the war. It shows that national character and the spirit of the people are very very important in how a country will end up becoming. The Chinese have the national characteristics of being very independent and hardworking and self confident and their ancient history and their recent history shows those traits time and time again. No the Minimum ROF was 900 the standard was 1,200 and 2,000 is just in your Wehraboo delusions and was NEVER done Irl at 2,000 the Gun would jam in 2 seconds, it was not designed to cope with that ROF.

I was a MG51 server in the Swiss army in the 80'. The Swiss MG51 is essentially a copy of the MG42 just a Rolex edition Absolutely a great MG but at a rate of 1200 S/sec , 30 sec of fire were 30Kg to carry around (7.5 caliber) , the MG and the tripod were another 16 and 26kg +another 10kg of extra equipment don't be fooled that's a lot of weight to carry as such they don't make any sense in modern context

In my opinion the mg's 42 biggest flaw was its rate of fire 1500 rounds per minute you would burn through ammo so quickly you'd be out before you know it and that gun would melt in no time the amount of ammo they would have to make and bring just to keep up with the rate of fire seems enormous but that's just my opinion

Facts ! Finally a expert saying 1500 rpm and not 1200 like every other noob.if the mg3 is a slowed down version of the 42 with a cyclic rate of 1200 then...he knows.

I know one thing that could out gun a mg 42, a ppsh41 may not be a lmg, but like the mg42 it has a very very fast fire rate
@headhunter1945

True that it does have a high ROF. The MG42 as issued with the standard bolt from the start of WW2 had a firing rate of 1,500, the PPSH had a firing rate of 1,250. By the end of the war they also made heavier bolts available, so some of them fired "only" at 1,200 rpm. Beyond that, though, the PPSH fires a pistol size round (about 700J of energy) while the MG42 fires a full sized round, and a powerful one (4,100J energy) at that. Lastly, the maximum effective firing rate of the MG42 is 3,500m (3,828 yd) when outfitted with tripod and telescopic sight, while the max effective firing range of the PPSH is 250m (273 yd).

Better than new mg's. Germany, Austria, Sweden, Croatia (partially) are still using it in 2022. And no i am not talking about MG3, i am talking about genuine ww2 era MG42. Of course that 90% of bundeswehr LMG's are MG3, however .. there are still more than 60 units using MG42. Difference is mainly in caliber and in rate of fire. MG3 is 7.62x51 nato and has 1000-1200rpm rate of fire. MG42 is chambered in 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser) and has 1400-1700rpm rate of fire.

So in this Death Wish 3 1985 Charles Bronson film! Someone a junkyard owner had a couple machine guns from world war 2 and Browning M1919 and a MG42! When he tried to shoot a mg42 it didn't fire and got over jumped on by the gangs! If so anyone why didn't his mg42 work in that film scene? Thanks!
