Күн бұрын

Weather Report was founded in 1970 by musicians who had met whilst playing with Miles Davis. This Montreux Festival show from 1976 follows on from the release of their album "Black Market" but features the line-up that would release their most famous and successful album "Heavy Weather" in 1977. Previously only available as a bootleg of a TV broadcast, this new DVD release is fully authorized and has been restored to its full length.

Kevin Grey if your looking at these posts, is Wayne Shorter's NIght Dreamer on the reissue Tone Poet schedule? There are so many but I would be curious to hear what you can do with Return To Forever's Romantic Warrior. Ok, add in Weather Report's Mysterious Traveller, Black Market, Weather Report, Mr. Gone.

Ah, I met him once! He was playing at Pasquali's on the beach in Southern California eons ago. Clare Fischer (RIP) was presenting with my then crush, sorta friend, Professor Roland Vasquez, drummer. I went to the patio out back for the break and Alex joined me out there along with the bassist, Jorge. Anyway, Alex was very a sweet spirit, but I had little idea at the time how world-class he was/is. He played all the percussion that evening. Anyway, that's that.

for you younger keyboard players -- notice when Zawinul plays the melody on the ARP 2600 that the keyboard scale is reversed. As he goes up, the notes go lower, as he goes down the notes go higher. Zawinul actually wrote the melody for Black Market with the ARP tuned this way. Inspiration can come from anywhere, always try crazy shit, don't be shy! (from a 40 year pro keyboard player)

I spent a lot of time with the band this year - 1976 - and recorded them the following year. The band chose a path that would bring them tremendous success, with groundbreaking new music even breaking thru to the radio. Jaco brought a brand new sensibility to Weather Report, though Joe really struggled to accept his starring role. Truth is, and Joe knew it, Weather Report rocketed musically after 1976. It was a tumultuous time, even toxic backstage, but audiences were blissfully unaware.

Glen Bledsoe Saw this tour in Hartford, Bushnell Memorial Theater, April or May 1976. Phenomenal. My second time seeing them, the first was on the tour for the Mysterious Traveller lp, fall 1974, at the same venue, with the extraordinary Alphonso Johnson on fretless & piccolo basses. Shakti featuring John McLaughlin opened this 1976 show, also amazing (I love Indian instrumental music, too. And I would go anywhere to see Johnny Mac, electric or acoustic). All my ticket stubs are currently in a storage bin, but I doubt that it cost more than $7.50 for the best seats in the house. I was in one of them, somewhere in the first ten rows, center floor. And, this was my first time witnessing the genius of (drum roll, please, Alex) Mr. Jaco Pastorius. After this concert, I made SURE it wouldn't be the last time I saw him. His playing on the title track, and "Barbary Coast", really impressed me. One of the most purely musical concerts I've ever been to. Imagine, in the same night: McLaughlin, L. Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, and Jaco. He was one of those people who only needed one name! As I like to say, "They just don't make 'em like this anymore...". Ps, I'll never forget hearing the homage to Joe's deceased former bandleader, that was one of the new tunes: "Cannonball". They panned the train sound across the P.A. speakers in stereo to open & close the track (pun intended), just like the album. And it was freaking LOUD! Long live WR!!

Speaking of the Montreux show, Zawinul biographer Brian Glasser said: "This 1976 performance is sufficient proof that these musicians were serious. They quite simply tear the place up, playing as if their lives depended on it...and cover more ground in a one hour set than most groups do in a year of touring. It's tiring to watch and listen to because it's so intense from beginning to end."

@@marcusberankis8960 Err...OK thanks Karen. You're making the false assumption that music that other people like has no effect on me. Like it can only be something neutral to my senses and joyous to them. This is false. If I am forced to listen to cheap, repetitive, simplistic, talentless, recycled pop garbage it absolutely impacts me in a negative way. No matter how hard I might try to enjoy plastic pop, it simply upsets me and is likely to ruin my mood. Fact. And, I'm quite sure, the people that like that sort of music would not hesitate to voice their dislike of a track by Tool, Grizzly Bear, Sparta, Miles Davis, At the Drive-in or Waax. Thankfully, KZfaq seems to have a lot of their live performances uploaded just for unlucky guys like me. Just wish they'd allowed people to videotape the acts back then. i started listening to weather report, mahavishnu, return to forever, etc. back in 1971, when i was an air force member, stationed at a god forsaken outpost (malmstrom afb) in montana, being from texas the shock of the freezing weather, but i found these albums at the base store, man they got me thru the lone nites, i'd fall asleep to them. got bless their talent. what has happen to the music of today?

Incredible. I've never seen less of Jaco in any Weather Report video ever. His face didn't show up for the first half of this film! That's unusual. It was as if whoever filmed this purposely said, "okay, everyone focuses on Jaco, let's spotlight the other guys for a change!" LOL.

I am forever grateful I tracked the band over most of Europe and - having only a very low budget - was allowed entrance as the fan I am and remain. These guys are (were) WONDERFUL people. I shall never ever forget... Much love and a biiig THANK YOU, Joe, Wayne, Jaco, Alex and Manolo. I still recall every single minute!

I thought maybe the footage was reversed, except Joe’s hands looked normal on the Rhodes! That is just the weirdest thing! And, like other’s comments, can we not have so much of the “proctologist’s “ view? Close-ups are awesome, except for when there are only close-ups!!

MediaGrope Love Alphonso. Can you say "Cucumber Slumber"??!! Some of the slickest, funkiest, hippest fretless bass playing you'll hear from 1974. And I saw him do it live in Hartford, CT, with WR in October 1974 (how I acquired the ticket to this show is a whole 'nother story in itself. I posted it on another KZfaq thread some time ago. It could only have happened in the 1970s (okay, maybe in the 1960s as well, or at a Grateful Dead concert, but Weather Report wasn't even 'born' yet...).
