Not only let at least 1 person know better 2 but also have the means to connect to someone or a place for a second way out or to call communicate for help. Always have a backup plan even when its just the gear that provides enough shelter, safety and food to stay overnight! Also as a an attractive women or women in general better have a dog or a partner joining or even agun for safety purposes.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts should become a requirement. Sure, it's a little cheesy when you're a kid, but you learn the basics of how to take care of yourself in the wilderness. How to make a fire, hunt, tie knots, create a shelter, cook, etc. There may come a time when we don't have the luxuries we have today and we won't be able to look up how-to's on KZfaq. It's important to have a basic set of skills/knowledge just ensure you and your families survival in the event of a catastrophe.

Lots of tourists come out to Colorado and go Into the Wilderness completely unprepared, and many die! FYI, you won't hear about this on the news. I lived in the Aspen area for 20 years, and I was shocked that so many stories were suppressed. My own son had to be rescued from the backcountry when he was 14 when it snowed heavily and his group didn't get back home on time. But we knew where they were, their route, and they knew how to survive. They were coming down the trail, just slowly, and they were exhausted. Thank you, Aspen Mountain Rescue!

Be aware the weather can change in an instant in an area like that, the clue for me was the crazy wind and stormy clouds in the first clip. You did the right thing turning back, I guess you learned some important lessons, like have the essentials to survive outside for at least a couple of days ie some light weight rations like cup-a-soups, packet noodles, water, energy bars, a light weight portable camping stove, fuel, a means of ignition, lighter, or matches, cotton wool to start a fire, an emergency sleeping back and light weight bivvy emergency shelter, torch, whistle, some warm light weight gear, like gloves, hat, thick dry socks etc A fully charged phone with a powerbank that will give at least 2 full charges from empty. Have someone else know where you are going and have a time setup you will call them to let them know you are back and safe, if no call they will arrange help. You did the right thing sharing this experience because a lot would go out there without any preparation or gear.

I was hopping deep into the ocean cause that’s the only way I could not drown, so jump up and go down hard to get to the sand so you can jump up hard and take a deep breath and repeat, so I was pretty far in the ocean, not that much since I was kid, most likely 9 or younger, but still pretty far, and I would have kept going, if when the last time I pushed myself down I felt nothing. Pure fear went through my body at the idea I was at a cliff in the ocean and all the predators that weren’t close to the shore are probably there. Immediately when that happened I swam back to the shore, never went deeper then my chest ever again after that. When I think about it my feet start to tingle.

Adventure is what she found. At a similar age I used to love hiking alone. Being prepared for weather changes and having more food and drink than you need, along with basic first aid and emergency kit. I never needed help. My worst was missing the last bus by 10 minutes (I saw it passing) and having to walk an extra 9 miles back to town for work the following day. Yeah. I was very fit back then.

As an avid kayaker, I always check-in with paddle boarders with “Did you start upwind or downwind today?” They usually look at one another like: “I dunno…” First-time paddle boarders at launch often start by heading downwind first because it’s a nice free assist, but then they get pinned or pushed back when they turn around. It’s good to see you went prepared.

People really do not understand how dangerous kayaking can be I fished a very small stream from a flowing reservoir and had no idea the spot I launched was 1000ft from the waterfalls. Long story short I was thrown from my kayak in sub 40 degree water. For some reason I couldn’t seem to swim up and re surface. I almost drowned, when I was helped from the lady nearest she told me 3 people have drowned in that EXACT same location evidently something to do with an under water current hole. Sucks you down. This was a body of water no bigger than a strip mall. ALWAYS wear a life.jacket please folks

The exact thing happened to me and my son in 14-foot perception kayaks, he was only 12 at the time and we had about 4.5 miles to go back to lake side camp from an island we went to have lunch on.... beautiful when we left our camp, made it over to the island, had lunch, and explored. While getting our things together, the sky suddenly and unexpectedly darkened. Later in the day now, we had to make the push. It was absolutely brutal. We're having 3 and 4 ft waves popping up everywhere. Wind coming from every direction... obviously, we ended up getting back to camp ... safety. Point being , always be vigilant, always have a backup plan for the unexpected in nature. It doesnt take much to derail your plans very quickly. Stay safe and alway continue enjoying all the world has to offer

I noticed as soon as I saw the water and sky at the beginning of your video that you were going to run into trouble. Then the time you spent on the island further endangering you and your pup. Always watch the sky and water, and keep an eye on your time. Even in Summer I have a rule of breaking camp by 3:30-4, 2:00 during summer rainstorm time. Not worth the risk. Life is meant to enjoy. Example: A dear friend of mine and I, both of us fit, he having been a mountain water baby his entire life; me grew up in the mountains then down to the coast, surfed, taught sailing, rowing and canoeing on the ocean growing up. We went canoeing up Green River Lakes, WY, portaged, then crossed the second (first) lake, had lunch and headed back. At the onset, I’d tried to warn him to turn back earlier as a cross wind was bound to come up, and he blew me off since he’d canoed there over 40 years. I warned him again about current and wind changes common anywhere after 2:00-4:00, especially at higher elevation, and he said he ALWAYS had a wind to his back on return to the boat ramp area. Well…..needless to say, there was such strong cross and front winds on the main lake, that boaters, jet skiers, paddle boarders and kayakers were ALL up on the E side of the lake, trapped at various places, looking exhausted. We dug in deep, water coming over the front and sides of the canoe at times from the waves yes waves that came up from wind and cross currents, and I remember being halfway across, looking to the W and E shores and realizing if we capsized, the current was pulling to the rocky W shore and the E too difficult to swim to, let alone the low water temp. I would have been screwed, especially with no thyroid (think no thermostat). I started to get scared, calmed myself, then used that energy. I hunkered down deeper into the canoe, and kept digging while my friend did the same while steering bless his heart. People on the shore were watching us, on the ramp with binoculars, and were shocked when we finally made it. As was I. My arms were rubber for two days. 🛶🏔️💦🌬️
