Hey!
This is an original piece of music using lyrics from the sea shanty found in the Sea of Sorrows book:
wiki.guildwars...
This was made in response to a challenge that KZfaqr WoodenPotatoes issued to the community to turn those lyrics into a song. Check out his channel here:
/ woodenpotatoes
I worked on this with my friend, Erik Scerri. Check out his channel!
/ @erikscerri
And thanks to Alwiren for the wonderful vocals!
/ alwiren
We've never made something like this before so it was quite a challenge! We listened to a ton of sea shanties before starting this for inspiration.
The instrumentation is also fun on this one. You'll hear a mallet, accordion, concertina, banjo, bass guitars, a Chinese flute, a gong, and standard orchestral instruments. I know it's not the most authentic set of instruments for a sea shanty, but it sounds good so dealwithit.jpg.
This was made with FL Studio 12, Omnisphere, East/West libraries, and various Kontakt libraries.
Enjoy!
LYRICS (turn on CC in the video!):
You don't know a storm 'til you ride the wind
'Neath cold and blackened skies, O
'Til you're sailing through a thunderhead
With the lightning in your eyes
Death, he laughs in the sails and the jags
And the bloody sun won't rise, O.
A sailor's life's filled with toil and strife
The sea's both boon and bane, O
We're Kryta bound on a northern tide
Through the lightning and the rain
We'll sail through all these stormy nights
'Til we're at home again, O.
Open sea, and we're homeward bound
Fair or foul the weather, O
The captain swears we'll make our port
Though the sun's burned to an ember
If the Dead Ships come and the darkness falls
Then we'll all go down together, O.
She's a restless sloop with a six-armed maid
A-dancing on her prow, O
Her brassy cannons crease the sea
But the weather's chased her down
Her compass spins, and her captain screams
And the crew's all dead and drowned, O.
The sails are rent, and the engine's blown
The keel is split to stern, O
We lost the rudder to the tide
And the mizzenmast is burning
The rain's like nails, and our harbour's lost
And the compass spins and turns, O.
Now the darkness comes, and the stars above
Circle 'round like sharks at sea, O
Instead of fighting for our lives
We should be sitting at our ease
But I chose the strife of a sailors life
And the ocean, she chose me, O.
The wind, it hounded, the thunder boomed
Thought the storm might just prevail, O
But we shouldered on 'til the break of day
And we tamed that fearsome gale
Held to courage and to honour
And we lived to tell the tale, O.
No, you don't know a storm 'til you ride the wind
'Neath the cold and blackened skies, O
'Til you're sailing through a thunderhead
With the lightning in your eyes
Death, he laughs in the sails and the jags
And the bloody sun won't rise, O.

This is legitimately one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever listened to, the way it peaks and dips... just like the sea :D Love it, love it all, such a shame its not more well known.

Wow, the melody, the atmosphere of the whole song. You gave these lyrics even more meaning and character with your voice. Perfectly fitting Cobiah's story and what he has witnessed through his journey in the Sea of Sorrows. *slowly claps*

this. this is the song. this is how i imagined it. everything that that shanty was meant to be - captured in true perfection. i remember reading it. three years ago, on those worn pages of the book... and i sung it to myself (secretly, as im not a great singer), trying to figure out how it would sound like... and you nailed it. also great choice of singer - although i would now love to hear it in a chorus as well, and wish someone would attempt it :)

This is easily one of my favorite songs. While it was inspired by song lyrics from what I gather is a Guild Wars sourcebook, the actual implementation is all from you guys, and you should be proud of how it turned out.

I know I like to see the lyrics all at once and in the same place, so here you go :) You don't know a storm 'till you ride the wind 'Neath cold and blackened skies, O 'Till you're sailing through a thunderhead With the lightning in your eyes Death, he laughs in the sails and the jags And the bloody sun won't rise, O A sailor's life's filled with toil and strife The sea's both boon and bane, O We're Kryta bound on a northern tide Through the lightning and the rain We'll sail through all these stormy nights 'Till we're at home again, O Open sea and we're homeward bound Fair or foul the weather, O The captain swears we'll make our port Though the sun's burned to an em-ber If the Dead Ships come and the darkness falls Then we'll all go down together, O She's a restless sloop with a six-armed maid A-dancing on her prow, O Her bra-ssy cannons crease the sea But the weather's chased her down Her compass spins and her captain screams And the crew's all dead and drowned, O The sails are rent and the engine's blow The keel is split to stern, O Lost the rudder to the tide And the mizzenmast is burn-ning The rain's like nails and our harbor's lost And the compass spins and turns, O Now the darkness comes and the stars above Circle round like sharks at sea, O Instead of fighting for our lives Should be sitting at our ease, But I chose the strife of a sailor's life And the ocean, she chose me, O The wind, it howled and the thunder boomed Thought the storm might just prevail, O But we shouldered on 'till the break of day And we tamed that fearsome gale Held to courage and to honor And lived to tell the tale, O No, you don't know a storm till you ride the wind 'Neath cold and blackened skies, O 'Till you're sailing through a thunderhead With the lightning in your eyes Death, he laughs in the sails and the jags And the bloody sun won't rise, O Note: The line about Dead Ships I love to alter to be 'If the Dead Ships come and darkness falls/Then we'll bring them down together, O' just cause it's awesome :D Even more note: These were NOT copy-pasted from the book, because this version of the song is missing one or two words (the SAFE in 'till we're safe at home again' is the most glaring one, even though with this melody it could be added in, which I do occasionally :))

This version is indeed not perfectly following the book! I got the lyrics from the Guild Wars 2 wiki which had inconsistencies that I wasn't aware of (the book calls them "Dread Ships" not "Dead Ships", for example. And the wind "howled" in the book, but "hounded" on the wiki). I've since updated the wiki after learning of this discrepancies; I even went back to the singer to re-take some of the lines so that everything's up to date and gave the mixing another round of polish. I hadn't uploaded that version anywhere before, but I thought you might be interested in it, so I've just uploaded it now: instaud.io/3w9z Thanks for the comment!!

@@StephanWells Oh I like this version plenty enough :) When I first read it before I heard this, I tried to put my own tune to it. It went pretty well until that wacky verse near the end about living at our ease but choosing the sea, which has an extra line or two. I was amazed that yours was able to field that with little to no trouble, so that's a point in your favor. I did check though, and the book says Dead, not Dread, although some of the other versions of the song on KZfaq say Dread. I've always personally thought it was exceedingly obvious that it was supposed to be Dead, even if Ree Soesbee typo'd it. Also, I mentioned this song (specifically your version, with your lyrics) in the fanfiction I'm writing (in like chapter 70). Thought you might be interested in that fact (I did give proper credit at the end :)) (and if you want to read the story, here's the link: www.fanfiction.net/s/12947718/1/Book-One-Tyria-s-Real) Happy singing! (Cuz honestly, you've got to be some sort of pro at this).

This is pretty good! I like it a lot. It also fits the "original" GW2 Soundtrack quite well. Still i got a little bit of criticism. In my opinion the singing could be a little more clear. The words should be a little more separated from each other to be more understandable and the on-beat could have more of an accent. The singing might be good on its own, but in combination with the instruments it gets a little too "dense" for my taste. Hard to explain, especially if youre not a native speaker. I hope you dont get me wrong =/

Hey... they didn't have compasses back in Sea of Sorrows! They could barely tell their position from Arah west and east by the end of the book - I doubt they have compasses even by the time it gets to the game. So what's up?
