Weathering miniatures, using paints different than the classic acrylics can seem daunting. In this weeks video I will try to make it less frightening for you. Showing you how you can weather miniatures, warhammer and scale models using enamel washes, oil paints and crackle medium (worn effects). Sit back and enjoy the process and maybe you'll feel comfortable enough to try it out yourself.

I first started with scale modelling and I was surprised when I got into miniature painting that these techniques aren't popular. There's so much stuff, filters, panel line washes, streaking effects, mud effects, splash effects, a ton of pigments, etc etc. My tip is to seal off the pigments with a wash or a Pigment fixer and when applying washes, it's recommended to apply satin or gloss varnish first, to prevent removing paint that's under when rubbing with the cotton bud. Also, when using a Chipping medium, acrylics or any water shouldn't be used on top of it without being sealed, if you don't want more chipping, because it can reactivate the medium. Usually a filter applied on top of a chipped layer seals it off quite nicely and smoothens the transitions

The pigments remind me of when I was a lot younger in the early 80's we would use powdered pastels with a q-tip on the wings of model airplanes to simulate rust. We would buy the chalks and just scrape them with a razor blade to get some powder.

Also if you're interested in that angle, check out for Martin Kovac's Night Shift channel kzfaq.info/love/NM5EknY1XBA9buLmJqYLdw . Again, he's focused much more on achieving in-scale realistic weathering which isn't a perfect match for the exaggerated style of wargaming miniatures, but definitely lots of lessons to be learned on weathering effects.

Here's some more. If you don't want to spend the money on the AK/mig stuff, hairspray works great too. Vallejo has chipping fluid too. With that, I use a brush to do specific areas. If you don't want to use enamels, Vallejo has all kinds of weathering sets and bottles in acrylic form. I use both. You just got to get in there and do it. I also use the airbrush to do dust layers. One thing that helps is to do a satin finish or gloss finish. When you are done, flatcoat or satin finish it. It's amazing what effects you can get with those weathering sets and bottles.

The easiest way for me is taking a piece of ripped sponge and dip it into the brightest highlight color I used. Then I just stipple it carefully on the mini (remember you can always add more but taking some away can become work) after the stippling I use black to fill in the marks left by the sponge you can be really messy here it may even strengthen the effect. That’s it for me folks. And thanks for the video Emil!

Something to make a note of when you do this kind of weathering.. When enamels cure they dry matte and hard, and they wont lift if you use other enamels or thinned oils over the top.. oils on the other hand can lift if you put an enamel over the top as the thinners in the enamel will reactivate them. if you have to use oils before enamel, its best to let them cure out for a few days and then put a varnish layer on to protect the oils before going in with an enamel and potentially undoing all your previous work.

I'm a armor modeler. And the one thing I can be cocky and sure about is weathering. I even go into detail on where in the world the vehicle and figures I'm doing are and what time if year. Just like anything, it's all about layers. The biggest mistake people make is, they do a phenomenal job painting the figure then half ass the weathering. It adds life. So on yours, great job.

I decided to not mess with oils, since I have almost everything based on acrylics, BUT the enamel streaking grime I bought was a godsend already and made a huge difference and was only 1 product. Eventually I'll get some more types (like the slime), but other than with the oils, I am good with 2-3 products, instead of a colorrange and such.

Tip 1) if you are on a limited budget for the AK interactive just go for the light rust and streaking grime. the others are less useful. Tip 2) AK's EU website after the shipping/Exchange is cheaper than Amazon prices to Canada (you may have to buy 3 to offset the shipping)

I can recommend using hairspray (in a pump style bottle) for chipping as well; the pump easily allows you to decant some of the hair spray, which you can apply with an airbrush or regular brush depending on how much coverage you want. It also activates with water and gives you a lot of control over how much chipping you want and the size of the chips, plus its generally cheaper than acrylic chipping mediums. When it comes to weathering, I stick with oils and pigments; its just personal preference, but I'm not generally a fan of enamel based products as I've had bad experiences with them. You should check out 2 Brushes, 1 Cup and Dr Faust's Painting Clinic; both of them also tend to do great work with weathering effects, and Dr Faust has done a lot with enamel washes run through an airbrush. I think you'll enjoy some of the stuff on those channels.

Awesome video, thank you. Hearing the kids playing in the background was hilarious, the struggle is real. Some questions: - the point of the chipping medium is to add extra texture to the model, correct? - do you know how does an oil wash compare to an acrylic wash that had flow aid added to it? - does an oil wash and AK enamel washes act similarly for panel lining, etc? Enjoyed the video immensely, keep up the good work

Try using disposable makeup sponges instead of cotton swabs to remove the enamel, it's much cleaner and easier and you won't end up with a bunch of fibers on things. I've been using enamel washes for years, glad to see they're catching on with more miniature painters.

Great video Squidmar, as always! Btw do you use some kind of gas mask for your AK enamels in air brush?

Have you tried using your pigments to create rust effects? That’s my primary method. I drop a couple pieces of pigment then just touch it with a damp brush with 70% alcohol it’s cool to add different coloured pigments to give that really rusty with different stages or ages of rust layers. There is an example on my Instagram if you want to see.
