In this video, I'm weaving two dishtowels with 8/4 cotton. In the pattern, I have integrated a lot of houndstooth. During the video, I explained in details how to weave houndstooth and also how to achieve nice selvedges with houndstooth.

THE LAMP
During the video, I presented a great reading lamp that BenQ kindly gifted to me for free. If you wish to learn more about this lamp, here's all the info about it:

THE YARN
For this project, I'm using Hobbii yarn again. This time, I'm trying their cones of 8/4 cotton. I used them in two colors:
-Light gray: Ash (07)
-Light blue: Cornflower (17)

I was gifted 25 pounds of 8/4 cotton, and did not know what to do with it. I saw your video and immediately warped my loom for your pattern and they are lovely towels and even though they look a bit complicated the pattern is pretty easy. Thank you for making these videos, they are so helpful for people who aren’t creative, but want to weave beautiful towels

Interesting! I am in the process of weaving houndstooth towels so I searched and found this video. I wasn’t confident about the way I was doing selvedges. I have been trying to capture the inactive yarn each time by looping around it with the active yarn. It means I’m reaching “backwards “ to capture that yarn. I was afraid the loops on the selvedges would be too long. Now I realize after watching your video that I don’t need to do that. However, for the sake of consistency, I’m going to continue doing it on this set of 2 towels and try your method on my next houndstooth towels. Your selvedges look great! Each time you make a video showing your personal technique you help someone who has a question about it. Thanks!

I made some towels during the pandemic using Lily Sugar and Cream brand yarn in a couple of different color stripes. Sugar and Cream is not mercerized. I have not used Hobbii. If the cotton yarn used does not say "mercerized", it will "shed" like a dog during the weaving process and when the project is first washed. I had to take a plastic hair pick and comb the sheddy bits out of the fringe. My weaving teachers told me that when weaving towels for actual use, to go ahead and abuse them, i.e. wash them in hot and dry them on the high or cotton setting in the dryer. So I did. Make sure the dye is color fast, though (cut a few lengths and stick it in boiling water).

Thank you for sharing all those great tips 🥰 How do you like your Lily Sugar and Cream towels? I would love to try this yarn and I feel like they would give thick towels 😊

I’m a very very beginning weaver..if I can even call myself that lol. I also used the Lily sugar and cream yarn and I love the towels it made. They are absorbent and, in my opinion, aren’t too thick. Definitely thicker than the 8/4 cotton I used on another towel, but I would definitely make more with it. Your videos are so helpful!

I love the color blocks, and that they are not all plaine weave. What shouldn’t towels have some cool patterns to them, yes?

I find the 8/4 from Hobbii to be very absorbent. I do hem them and try to remember to use 8/2 for the hem area so it isn’t quite as thick and makes a nice hem. I also got tracking with mine which can look kind of cool but I’m not sure why I am getting it.
@Curly_n_Yarny

Using 8/2 cotton for the hem is a brilliant idea! Thank you so much for sharing 😊 and for the tracking, I have been receiving lots of questions about that. I'm considering making a video about it!

Great idea about edges with 8/2. Thank you. I’ve just finished 8/4 cotton towels & have tracking too. Would be interesting if there is a particular reason for it. Haven’t used them yet but good to know that they will be absorbent. 🤞

From what I can remember being told, it has to do with the spun nature of the fiber. It is both distracting and fascinating.

hi there, I have been enjoying your videos. I have a 16 inch rigid heddle loom but I am discovering it is a bit too narrow for tea towels because of shrinkage :(. So I am wondering what size is your rigid heddle loom? I am looking at whether or not to buy a wider rigid heddle loom. I look forward to more of your videos. T x
@Curly_n_Yarny
@Curly_n_Yarny Жыл бұрын
To answer you, my loom is 32" wide 😊 I like my tea towels wide and I usually weave them about 24" wide. But you might find that you like your towels even if they are a bit narrower than that. Also, before buying a new loom, you might want to look into weaving a double width. It's a bit advanced, but it can allow you to weave projects wider than your loom 😊

@@Curly_n_Yarny Thank you so much for responding to all my comments. I confess, I gave into temptation, I bought the 32 inch loom and it should be arriving in the next couple of days, ooops it just kinda fell into my internet shopping basket, I don't know how that happened lol After I bought it, I then found your bath towel video and thought, yes that is my justification for the bigger loom. I can't make a tiny bath towel. I might get away with it for a tea towel but not a bath towel. My family are going to love me even more getting a hand woven bath towel for Christmas, well...... perhaps not this Christmas but definitely next year. I have also tracked down where to buy the cotton chenille for me in the uk :) Thank you again for the inspiration. I really enjoy watching you. T x

Bonjour, merci de vos super vidéos ! J’aimerais savoir si il y a une différence entre les linges tissés avec du coton 2/8 double et du coton 4/8. Merci et bonne journée.
@Curly_n_Yarny
@Curly_n_Yarny Жыл бұрын

Can you please explain how you keep track of the length of your towels while weaving?
@Curly_n_Yarny
@Curly_n_Yarny 4 ай бұрын
Sure! I have used 2 different techniques over time. 1. I use a bit of masking tape that I tape to the project. I note on in the amount of inches woven and I advance it on the project as I progress with the weaving. 2. I use a paper measuring tape from Ikea and I pin on my project as I progress. I hope this helps!

Is it OK to warp with 8/2 cotton and the Weft 8/4 cotton for dish cloths or dish towels?
@Curly_n_Yarny
@Curly_n_Yarny 4 ай бұрын
I don't see a reason why not! Do you know which heddle size you'll want to use and if you'll want to double your warp? Depending on what you choose, the look and thickness of your towel would differ, but they would still be dishtowels!
