This is a demonstration of weaving floats when working Fair Isle (stranded knitting) in purl using two hands to hold the yarn. This video also provides a brief demo of the same weaving method in knit. Visit www.thephilosopherswool.com for a more complete explanation of the knit technique.
The first piece of fair isle is my Wrought Iron design: www.ravelry.com/patterns/libra...
The second is the Unalakleet shawl by Jennifer Thompson: www.ravelry.com/patterns/libra...
Both of these designs are available through Knit Pick's Independent Designers Program.

In our shop we made up a ditty: Wrap the one you don't want, wrap the one you do. Drop the one you don't want and pull the needle through! Thanks for this demonstration!

In addition to the very tidy appearance of the wrong side of the fabric, the floats 'meander' up and down consuming more yarn that just a straight float across the back does and making the fabric considerably more elastic. I think this is, by far, the best way to work stranded knitting. I learned this from a very old video I can't find anymore (I think it was from Philosopher's Wool as you mentioned) and had forgotten how to weave in the float when knitting with yarn held by the left hand. Thanks very much for the reminder. Nice job.

Thank you so much! This is truly brilliant. I have a color project which is flat, knit in rows, and knew how to weave the (right) knit side, but not the purl. I really love this and it’s fun to do. As you mention also, it actually makes an attractive “wrong” side. Thank you!!!

Great technique. Love the reference to Joan (schrouderknits). Her knitting wisdom has helped me out a few times.

Thank you for this video! I have been struggling for days with other videos and my library of books. Your simple explanation of "wrap the wrong way, then the right way, remove the wrong way, finish the purl stitch" is all I needed to know. It is the technique I use for stranding with the knit stitch in the round, but I couldn't manage the stranding of occasional purl rows in the round. Bravo!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! I've honestly put off this color technique because in the past, I was never happy with the floats just hanging around in the back, but now I can't wait to knit up a pair of gloves I've had sitting to the side for almost a year now!

Wow, this video is EXACtLY what I was looking for. I'm very excited to start using this new technique. I thought I knew all the knitting tricks but this one is new to me -- and I need it for a project I'm working on right now. Thank you so much. You're an excellent teacher.

I started making stockings and what a mess I made with other advice of bobbins or butterfly's. I started to just do the intarsia patterns with just long strands of yarn. I never seemed to get tangled but the ending results was to short of yarn at times and so many ends to weave in. My 2nd stocking was so distorted, I almost gave up multi color knitting. I had so many places to duplicate stitches that did not align. After so many videos I found yours and let me add your little ditties on remembering the wrapping,, wrap wrong wrap right etc. was so very helpful. I made small flash cards to have next to me till I get that ahhhaaa moment. Thank you so much. Thank you again

This was so helpful - and for more than the purl. I knit your shawl for my mom for Xmas - was surprised when it popped up here...and was working on the border. Had no idea what the C2 switch was for but now, when you flipped it over, I can see how lovely it is bound over the steek on the back. Thank you - it is a magnificent design...and fun to knit with the weaving technique! I learned a lot!

OMG - I love this technique. I have tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to fair isle (in the round works well enough for hats, but sweaters for me are a challenge). Also, I dislike knitting in the round because of the jog, and that jog can be especially noticeable in colorwork. I am excited to try this technique on a child's cardigan that includes a little colorwork sheep. Thank you for this demonstration.
@riveririsblue

To avoid the jog knitting in the round, you knit the first stitch in the round normally, on the second round you slip that first stitch, and then on the third row you knit until the next color change, where you repeat the steps with new color.

Hello and thank you for this extremely helpful video. I'm a continental knitter and have only now started experimenting with right-hand knitting. What I observe is that the right-hand knitting and weaving in gets a bit puckery on the right side, and when I weave in, alternatingly, one stitch is larger than the other which shows on the right side as a regular sort of pattern. Has anyone had this experience and has been able to solve this problem?

Fabulous video. I was trying to find a copy of the DVD by Philosophers Wool. A Raveler referred me to this video. It did not come up in my searches because I looked for KNIT Fair Isle & this is WEAVE Fair Isle. The grey on grey scarf: is that an available pattern?
