Your teaching style of breaking down complex topics to an introductory level is absolutely phenomenal. Before watching this I had no idea what Ethereum or Smart contracts actually were/did. 99% of the population still have never heard of Web 3.0 and the mechanisms of smart contracts; I truly think awareness alone will change the game

Hey Siraj! I find your video interesting. I have been bullish on blockchain for the last 2 years but after much thinking and research, I feel like we are overestimating blockchain. True, it can have some applications in the real world and it's only the beginning, but I think that we don't understand well enough the consumer's needs. Plus, you're saying in your video that Web 2.0 is controlled by giants of the Internet (that's true) but they control a SPECIFIC MARKET (Amazon for the retail, Baidu & Facebook for the social networks, Google for the search engine). They can gather as much data as they want but I do think that there's still much space to innovate outside the markets they control without blockchain. You're speaking about the fact that data are taken away from us, but the consumer eventually likes to have suggestions on what to buy, what to use. Obviously there are moral and ethical problems but I don't think that consumers really want a decentralized system. We have known cryptography for a very long time, it's not new. We know how to encrypt and decrypt data. I think you're missing the big point here. Problem is not whether blockchain is good for the world. Problem is does it solve big and painful enough problems to bring about a major change in consumer habits.
@kc-me6wl
@kc-me6wl 2 жыл бұрын
great points here...i have started coming to the same conclusions myself and aim to investigate more exactly how crypto will change lives...i dont think its a matter of whether people want decentralised systems - people wont care as long as a major issue is solved - that all that matters :)
@BGALUM
@BGALUM 2 жыл бұрын
Valid points, though I have never been one to push blockchain or bitcoin. All of this depends on technology and having enough electrical power to run the systems that perform the desired functions, verification, computations, etc. As a libertarian minded individual, the concept of decentralized automatically seems like a great idea. The problem is this doesn't solve a world problem specifically but does create a new one in terms of energy consumption. This becomes more true as countries that have historically been less technologically advanced make the transition to technology adaptation. While the technology is fantastic, even four years later this still seems like a solution in search of a problem. As a life long technology advocate, consumer, and adapter, I no longer see technology growing to enhance life, but more of an obstacle to living life to its fullest. Blockchain, bitcoin, Twitter, Facebook, etc pulls us more into a virtualized world and marketplace more detached from reality.

Siraj, thank you so much for what you are doing. It's incredibly noble of you and I highly respect the work you are putting out. I am a computer science student, and I want to make a difference in the world and I've always thought of computing as having the incredible power to do that. I believe the technology can come, what's even harder I believe, is shifting people's mindsets, and figuring out how we can really implement this as an idea through people, and through existing large corportations. The code is easier for me to understand than how the economy works, how people work, and the motivations they have for doing things, and how they respond to change and uncertainty. Perhaps as you had said, this is an issue AI can solve as well. You have inspired me with your enthusiasm and I'm sure others as well. Its hard to put thoughts into words very clearly, but wholeheartedly I think the actions of an individual as yourself have great value and impact on us as a humanity. Thank you for educating me today.

Hello Siraj, Love your videos, you do an amazing job ! A few questions / comments for you : Do you agree that we still have some time to go in order to compete with the cloud data centers ? Solutions like kubernetes and federation they already allow to go cross data centers and create real decentralized services. That work even on promise and on "hybrid clouds" I really like the idea of fully decentralized systems, however for now they are unusable for the problems we are trying to solve. Few contexts in which I would like to have your input on how to dencentralize them for web 3.0: - Databases (ACID storage, decentralized querying) - Known computing languages (For now, only specialized computing languages can be used) - Performance of the global network (Datacenter speed and cross datacenter speed is unmatched [cpu,ram,disk,network] ) - Performance per node executing code (We will need more than a few mu(s) of cpu, more than a few MB of ram, more than a few MB of disk) - "Standard", for now there is none. Ethereum is living on his bubble, same for IPFS, etc... Just in order to this things to get integrated in a web browser without the requirement of extra plugins and so on. It will need to go through w3c and browsers need to agree to implement those api's IMO: CDN's & DNS's could be the first to be replaced if IPFS and any X distributed storage would be implemented. But this requires more than simple isolated actions and projects. It requires people working at the current IEEE and W3C to propose those changes. Keep up the good work

Hey Siraj just wanted to say it's really heartening to hear you talk about these things. Too many people in tech just care to create cool things, & are blind or willfully ignorant of the societal & ethical implications of what they build. As a programmer & believer in the tenets of free (& distributed) software, it's encouraging to see another 'woke' (& really talented) programmer.

Hi Siraj. I have a question. I was using a service call stamp.io from Stampery. And I registered a file to the bitcoin blockchain, but I only have a hash address to verify that the file that I register corresponds to that hash. On the first part of this video you say that one advantage from web 3.0 compared to web 2.0 is that our data got stored on multiple servers (nodes), so I download the file from the blockchain for example to prove that the file I upload corresponds to the file I upload if blockchain only store a hash not the file really, blockchain is only a ledger book not a store of files.
