Weirdly enough, there are MLM's that tout themselves as training women in "financial literacy" for the low, low price of $299, but then post an unhinged rant about how they don't want people who aren't clever enough to "solve the problem" of not having $299 to throw at their upline (who were selling Monat shampoo two years ago until everyone realised it was a sinking ship). They basically tout an AI bot that can trade crypto for you & some sort of training with a top financial person (who turns out to be a life coach who's at the top of the pyramid because he got in there early enough). The best part is that they've made a little webseries pretending to be the Kardashians, showing off how rich and successful they are by renting out an AirBNB that they got kicked out of for violating pretty much every aspect of their rental agreement (smoking, dancing on counters, gatherings, being genuinely horrible people etc.) What qualifications do they have, you ask? Well, the first episode shows them talking about graphs. They discuss what the pointy bits are called, then fawn over the fact that one person made fifty quid over an undisclosed period of time. The next episode consists of bitching about someone who called them out for dumping their downlines at Monat without telling them (it's a pyramid scheme, so the bottom layers are screwed if the top ones do a runner). The last half is basically them shouting. A _lot_. Because they love each other so much you guys! It's like watching the popular girls at high school who pretend to be besties but are trying _way_ too hard so it starts feeling really weird. Anyway, by this time next year they'll be on the next fad MLM the moment this one starts to get stale.

You can also just buy access to the backend management network and just reroute the SMS through yourself. There was a talk on the Chaos communication congress a decade ago and the price for access back then was between 200 and 300 Euro a month for the access to the backend network.

If I recall, it started from distrust of government. The idea of a currency not tied to any government had appeal for people of a certain mindset. A few of them struck it rich and it kicked off a digital gold rush as people started buying with the hopes of striking it rich, and others started creating new currencies and eventually new block chain products to hawk to all the eager investors. Naturally, the gold rush also brought in scammers as well. Ironically, crypto currency fails as a currency since people don't use it as money; they use it as an investment.
