I've seen a lot of pricing videos and didn't expect much but this is actually pretty good. I've never done hourly rates and mostly fixed price. I've done some websites with a low upfront cost and monthly payments. They've worked out well because I choose carefully who I work for and unless you are negligent or raise prices a lot, clients stay for years because it's a pain to change. I agree that per-page pricing isn't a good idea. I've never done that. My clients usually have no idea how to build a website and when I tell them how easy and fast it is to add a page (with content and design potentially adding complexity) it builds trust.

Hi Darrel, I am a business owner as well, and I have recently started offering web design services to my clients. Some of my friends are helping me in this business, but we have been struggling with the price. Although we have a pricing solution, I think this guide will be a great help for us. I understood several things from this video and I will definitely be upgrading my price guide after watching your video!

I'm retired now but in my company i used both pricing tiers depending on the size of the site and the client but I always started with a mock-up draft using stock photos and lorem ipsum content to give them an idea of what it's like. the draft was factored into the pricing so if they went ahead with the project I'm paid for it and if they dropped out I didn't suffer much loss I also required a contract explaining they would pay in at least four payments and broke it down to what each step represented regarding the stage of the site. this helped me because in that contract it discussed additional pricing for modifications along the way so that if they wanted to make big changes I wasn't stuck working and not getting pain. after full payment they would get full access to the site and all of their domain and hosting passwords etc. worked well for me.

The method I use is literally a flat rate per product on e-commerce sites. So agree a price per product that covers product page, description and SEO. It also covers the cost of misc. pages I started that when I got caught out badly by a customer who just kept adding products and as my word was my bond..It also deals with price objections. Them: "That's a bit expensive" Me: "Dude, you're selling £1000 armchairs, remember this cost is one time, per item, no residuals or commissions ongoing" They soon see the cost benefit and know the more product they put up the more it costs.

Hi Darrel! Thanks for all these awesome videos. I have questions about how you organize working for multiple clients after you build their websites? Do you have a video going over how to track, monitor, and maintenance a growing clientele? I know in another video you discussed an SEO platform that makes it super easy to add multiple websites and get reports. Do you have videos or is there any way to consolidate hosting, ESP, domains, and all the backend stuff under one easy hood? Or am I a dreamer?! Thanks.

I keep on coming back to this video for a refresher. and it feels good. I just hope Darell will get to read this comment. I wanted to know how I can price for reconstruction of a website. Like, they already have a running site, but they're not happy with it and wanted to have an upgrade. Can we consider that like creating a new website? even if i am only applying a new theme that works well with their plan in mind. the site is in wordpress btw.

I have found combining hourly rate with project price gets good results. For example I estimate how many hours it will take then add 25% on top of that for project creep. I.e if I charge $50/hr and estimate it will take 10 hours (=$500), I tell the potential client that I will develop their website for $750 OR $50/hr, whichever is lower. I tell them I also give them a work log of the time it takes for all tasks, so they can see exactly how much time was spent. Often the project comes in under project, so they spend less than they were prepared to pay. Sometimes it takes longer, in which case they get more than they paid for. Either way the client is usually very happy.

Let your project websites speak for your experience so that they can see tangible results and choose among the various types.. Starting out I kind of prefer hourly.. but only $20 an hour in Canada?.. i dunno about that though.. Pretty much NY prices.. Custom databasing is the trick as well as styling for custom sites..... I also think helping them set up their own web servers instead of using hosts is a better strategy so host sites won't usurp their industry if they violate terms or pass away.. The "about us" page, that is really their job to submit to the designer.. but it is good to give them a template.. my comments are not advice, more like questioning statements as I am just starting out... thx 4 posting video, every little bit makes us wiser...

I do a custom set-up fee for a relatively modest sum, not as much as I could charge for a one-time fee, but certainly not criminally low where I run a risk long-term. I was also taught from a young age that people need to have skin in the game to be committed. If you charge them too little with the promise of seeing a return down the road, a client might lose interest or sight of the goal. If you charge them too much, they might get spooked. If you charge them "just right," then they feel they have invested too much money to let things fall off the radar, meanwhile if they do drop the ball, you've seen enough of an initial return that yes, you might still be at a loss, but not nearly as much of one. I then do monthly payments, in addition. So one-time custom set up fee based on the size of the project and then I offer monthly plans that include different features and packages, as well as a manageable number of support hours. If they exhaust the number of support hours, then there is an hourly rate. I've found this model weeds out the cheap clients while keeping me accessible for any business that is truly serious about their brand without going beyond my scope either. I know my limits and don't price beyond it, but I'm also not going to play games with people who don't understand the value a great digital presence. Your website is a reflection of your brand. If it's some cheap thing a complete amateur out of their depth put together, that's how people are going to view you and your business. If your site is polished, refined and tasteful, or at least in line with what your market expects of you and your brand, then you are going to be taken more seriously.

@mattsgalaxy823

@th3doorMatt
@th3doorMatt 2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend milestones. It keeps both parties accountable. Depending on how much you're charging for the entire project, 50% before work has even broken ground can be a bit...daunting. If it's a decent sized project, setting up smaller percentages can help keep things on track. Say, for example, you're working on a site with e-commerce and a LMS. You could determine you need 30% down just to get started. Then once you build out the core pages of the site, the easy stuff, you can set a milestone of another 25% to begin work on e-commerce, then another 25% for the LMS, and finally 20% to hand over the project. This is also a method that reduces stress and pressure on you. Hypothetically we'll say it's a $30,000 project. As a client I will be engaged and definitely keep tabs from time to time if I am required to put 30% down ($9,000), but if you're asking me to put $15,000 down initially, I'm going to be on you DAILY wondering when that thing is going to be ready and where are you with X, Y, and Z. Why? Because I've made a big commitment already. By demanding they drip feed payments throughout the process, it ensures you're getting paid for the time you're putting in, while also preventing (not ensuring) that the client is a bit more lenient because they know that their first payment is for the core, their second for the e-commerce, their third for the LMS and fourth for completion, so they know if they haven't made the third payment, you're not working on the LMS, therefore any questions they may have regarding it are going to be irrelevant. Hopefully that helps.

Two questions. Content. Is it typical for a client to have all of the info they want on the site written out and then you just add what they want, or should you know their business and develop the selling points for their visitors. Second are graphics/photos. While there are stock images available on the Web (either free for commercial use or paid) I find that it's not personal to use stock images (and everyone goes to them); however, would you bring a camera take images for them or require the client to provide the photo content? Same question for graphics (including logo designs). This has been area I've struggle with because all of that extra work adds a lot of additional costs. If you make them do that work they could respond "what the hell am I paying you for to do this job for us?" This is especially true for businesses that don't have a functional website (very outdated) or who want the world yet not pay a premium for that world. Finally many do not trust the freelance Web developers (much like micro sized businesses (less than 10 employees)) because there is no big agency behind the name brand (like a Web dev company with 50+ employees and recognition). Additionally if you are one person doing all this work, to value yourself is near impossible because how do you value non tangible things?

I'm no Darrel Wilson but I do work for a media company I'll give you my 2 cents even tho you didn't ask :). With all the clients I've worked with the smaller business or mom and pop shops are the hardest to get content from, they either don't have graphics or have them but don't have the actual good quality stuff so I need to go to there facebook and get it from there :( our bigger clients will usually provide all the information we request upfront when they come in after our initial meeting. Most of the time with smaller places they wont have the time to make custom content for a website and you might have to just create the text and what not on your own sadly. But like before with bigger clients you can request the information and they would have someone in the office that will write it up for you, not saying small business wont its just more the time when we ask we also offer that we can write it for them and they usually just want that. With the photo taking, we use stock photos when we can and if they client has photos of what they do/provide we ask for them, usually with social media nowadays the business should have at least something in photo form. With bigger clients we also offer to send out a guy to do photo and video and thats another charge, you can also include the charge in the initial cost and explain it to the person buying the website from you. With valuing yourself, that's a hard one. At first you're going to be taking a L with how much you technically make hourly, I think my first personal client I made around 3 dollars an hour for around 15 hours of work. But that's just the nature of it for me at least, I'm slowly building personal clients and working as a web dev and eventually I'll be able to work on and with my personal clients as a full time job but not right now. Anyway I hope this helped and good luck!!

After many years of working for myself... ultimately clients just want to know your hourly rate (especially corporate clients). Most web agencies charge anywhere from $100 per hour up to $300 per hour. An hourly rate is hard to get out of, because clients want to see hourly charges broken out on invoices. If you don't like hourly rates... then I hate to break it to you, but this is what most corporate clients will expect to see.
@darrelwilson

While hourly rates are common in the industry, consider offering package deals or project-based pricing to provide value and flexibility to clients.

@@darrelwilson An initial package price for a mom and pop is fine, but when you get into bigger clients (5K to 50K websites)... If you want the job... your 16 page proposal will have hours and rate(s) breakdowns. A proposal with a big number and nothing explaining that number (like hours times rate) will get thrown out. You can attempt to disguise an hourly rate within a package, but in the end they just want to know your rate against other agencies. When they simply ask, what's your hourly rate?... you better be prepared with an answer.
