Landing your first dev job is really hard, especially if you are self-taught. To make it even harder you almost never know if you are ready to apply for your first job since junior developer jobs are always asking for 3+ years of experience. In this video I talk about what technologies you need to know in order to get your first job and how to find jobs that are a good fit for you.

Ruby and Ruby on Rails was my biggest strength with relational databases, followed by Javascript. I knew basic html and css. I was hired on for backened but now I work with Php, Laravel, Javascript, Vue, Vuex, html and css. I am more of a full stack developer now. Lol. 6 months in. I haven't touched Ruby since I was hired.

I've been learning web dev for about a year and a half now. I was worried that I don't know enough to apply to any jobs. I'm also extremely shy when it comes to meeting new people so that was also a minus. One day I decided that I might as well try to find a decent job and found it the first week after I started searching. I was a member of a local Facebook developers group in my country and the group is fairly active with job postings. I wrote up a decent bio about what technologies I use and what I am currently learning, and some of my ambitions going forward, I also linked my GitHub and portfolio page with a couple of projects. In a matter of days, I got over 10 emails for job interviews and people were actually praising me for the job posting, saying it's really good. I've also noticed a beginner web dev asking me for guidance, it's not like I was a senior dev, lol, but I was glad to help him out and he was extremely grateful. If anything, remember that YOU DON'T HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING. Do you think chefs know how to make every single dish at a restaurant they just started working at? Most - if not - all tech companies have an onboarding process and they also allow you to attend seminars. Just like Kyle said at the start, you learn most of what you will use daily at your job - and you get paid to learn! Of course, this might not apply to every company - google, for example, you might need to know a lot more, but for beginners, I think most of the time we think we need to know every single thing before applying, and never doing so. Get out of your comfort zone and apply! If you're still in college and want to do part-time, I am certain there are companies willing to hire you as a freelancer. If anyone is interested I'd be glad to help you out as well!

I started learning Python from November 2019 and got a job in one of the start ups in March 2020. But the start up did not ran for more than 3 months. I came out and started applying for jobs, but it was difficult to get the job with the skills I had and experience what companies looking for in the Covid19 era. So worked for non tech domain to survive and was learning python and working small projects on my local machine (with resources from internet). So my query now is, I have 2 self projects built: 1. Grocery Store management project ,where it has Python flask framework as a Backend (which I was aware off), For front end I have used html, css,Javasrcipt which is new to me and I have learnt these front end skills ,whatever needed for this project while working on the project. Also for database I have used Mysql which is again the same thing as front end.i,e.. Learnt these Database skills ,whatever needed for this particular project. 2. The second project is attendance tracking, where I have used Python for backend using Flask framework, For front end, I have used react framework which again I have learnt along with working and have little bit knowledge on react from this project. For Database I have used PostGreSql. Also this project uses, Machine learning concept to predict the time, the person comes in and goes out. The reason I have used this project is gain knowledge on react, database and also Machine learning for my resume. Can anyone suggest me, whether this is the right approach for applying for job.? Thank you.

This, so much. I applied for a React Native internship to finish my Computer Science Degree and got the place. The closest I had worked with compared to React Native was Angular, so I was kinda scared because while both frameworks have many similar aspects, I was starting at a company from scratch. When I finished the internship, I was such a much better developer overall, they wanted to keep me but Covid affected their business and the other students doing interships couldn't stay there as well... IMO, it is very very important to not being afraid of asking for help when you find problems, because the guys with more experience can really help you out, as long as you show commitment. No one is born knowing this shit, so dedication and will to learn and put the effort is key.

@@alwinvillero4404 No they don't. The seniors are really open to questions. And to be honest i was afraid to ask question to the seniors with a reason of not wanting to dissapoint them with my lack of knowledge. I'm a junior in college and I don't even feel ready for an internship 😭. Now, I started learning web dev like weeks ago so ofc I'm not ready but dang. I actually studied this bc I liked web dev (only saw html and css tho) in HS, but in college I lost focus of web dev so I mostly used java and C++, I did take a couple of web dev classes but I haven't even been taught javascript there yet, one was html/css + wordpress focused (but I didn't learn anything new, like AT ALL, I literally just learnt flexbox and grid from your videos this week and it wasn't hard, it doesn't even take a day to understand the basics,, what a waste of my semester seriously, I could've been watching your videos, ughh) and another class was about like about CMS and I just learnt some PHP. This semester I'm gonna have an actual web dev class but I asked around and apparently it's with typescript, that's good too tho. Kinda sucks that I'm just actively learning until now. I did try the odin project like a year and a half ago, and I started it again like 3 weeks ago and I'm about to finish the foundations section yayy. But I'm kind of panicking since I'm a junior already and haven't even had an internship.

I asked the guy conducting the interview "So, I am curious, how do you find Deno, is it really that better than Node?" and he goes "oh no no no, we are not using it, we just want people to know how to use it". The website that I am using for looking for a job lists 4/5 skill as equivalent to a senior dev.

Now they are 3 months behind everyone else who graduated, applied, got hired, and now gaining experience on the job. not to mention we are entering a nasty recession, so there may not be any jobs available to them in a few months time

Any input on how covid 19 has affected entry level/junior level positions? I'm a recent grad with no internship experience (with a couple of projects) and i seem to have a difficult time even finding entry level positions.

When people say that dev jobs are in high demand, what they really mean is mid to senior level jobs are in high demand. Over the last 5 years, there has been a huge surge in students choosing to study computer science (way more than when I graduated in 2013), not to mention dev bootcamp grads flooding the market. Junior jobs are way harder to find now because of this. In my experience, the Covid pandemic has not significantly affected the tech market. There was a hiring lull over the summer but most companies have bounced back. The current lack of junior level positions stems from the influx of junior candidates and low demand for junior roles.

This hasn't been my experience. I have projects with react, html css vanilla js ect and I cant find any job that doesn't require you to already be at a professional level. Haven't even got any interviews. There is so much competition for jobs here that I can't find anywhere thats willing to "train me on the job"

I am 2.5 years of experienced software engineer. I am 24. I can confirm what Kyle said is true. I got my first job based on my CS concepts instead of framework and stuff knowledge. That's what they look for as a junior or entry level developer. Trust me, I entered as noob and now I experienced so much, seniors around your, your manager, each of them is contributing to your growth in certain way. with experience you get to know lot of things, but not everything & that is fine. I worked as full stac dev, but my first job gave me light, That I really like to design and build pages, So I am looking for job as Frontend Developer, but expectations from me are much higher than entry level developer. Lot of recruiters just reject because they want react developer and I have no professional experience that, lot of them mention they are good if candidate knows either of these good enough. Thanks Kyle for inspiring, this same thing applies for mid level post too :). For people looking for their first job, github is your only place to visit daily, build , show , shine, get the job!

I started applying jobs yesterday and I'm feeling anxius while I wait for that single email telling me that I would have my first interview, I've been thinking that no body will answer, I just build like 5 projects and 2 of them with css, react & redux, now I feel like they will considerate me after looking at my projects. Thanks for this relief

I wouldn't put the projects u copy for from following tutorials. Because: 1) its not developed by you. 2) even if you copied line by line and are able to explain each line of code, it does not mean you fully understand and can utilize thode concepts to solve the companies problems. I would recommend reading documentations, as you follow tutorials. And look for simple projects u make your own. I know it sounds harsh, but thats the only way to learn i believe

I know well CSS/SASS, JavaScript(ES5, ES6+, jQuery, react), html5 etc but the most I feel comfortable with react.js I don't need even search how to solve issue on the internet.. cus I can do it by myself and your videos helped me out a lot while I was studying exactly React ;) I'm looking for a job exactly based on react cus I feel so much comfortable - even tho I have created a lot of static websites, websites based on PHP. Now i'm testing myself in node.js, express.js and next.js (i'm doing it for myself not for seeking a job with those technologies). I think if I would not have a confidence in some technology I would never try to find a job in that technology..
