Prosthetic rehabilitation in atrophic jaws using dental implants represents a challenge for any clinicians. Factors that are potential sources of complications are bone quality, soft tissue management, and anatomical variables. In order to have a long‐term outcome and benefit for the patient, the treatment plan should consider all these difficulties and variables. With the introduction of three dimensional (3D) diagnostic imaging and treatment planning technologies in implant dentistry, the preparation and placement of dental implants have become the norm in quality patient care, especially in patients with severe atrophies. Guided implant surgery has helped facilitate, simplify, and overcome the most common challenges in dental implant therapy. Modern implant software are able to reconstruct anatomical areas in 3D allowing clinicians to virtually plan implant placement from CT or cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan.
In today’s practice, CAD/CAM technology is frequently a foundational element of an integrated digital workflow for dental implant placement and restoration. This technology includes an intraoral scanning system, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), implant planning software, and CAD/CAM design and milling software and hardware.
The convenience, time-saving and efficiency of designing and fabricating a solution that can quickly and easily be modified or replicated on site are just a few of the advantages of using CAD/CAM dentistry. Specifically, this type of approach enables clinicians to operate difficult cases with a minimally invasive approach, with a prosthetic restoration, that has a predictable success rate.

*Dr. Giampiero Ciabattoni
Born in Bologna, enrolled in Medicine at the University of Ferrara in 1991. He then graduated in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics at the University of Florence.
He has attended several courses in Sweden at the Branemark Clinic for years and worked with Prof. Stefan Lundgren of the University of Umea - Sweden and Dr.Eric Van Dooren Antwerp-Belgium and dr.Mauro Fradeani.
Participate in various studies on the immediate function, guided surgery and post-extraction systems an is' speaker in Italy and to the foreign countries.
Professor in the Master in computer-assisted implant prosthetics at the University of Genoa.
Author of the book Digital Implantology,. edit.Quintessenza Int.
Private practice in Faenza, with activity devoted to oral, and particular interest to the surgery for implantology and implant-prosthesis.
*Dr.Alessandro Acocella
Dr. Alessandro Acocella qualified in dentistry from the University of Florence in 1999 (cum laude). In 2003 he specialized in Oral Surgery (cum laude) at the University of Florence.
From 2007 to 2010 he worked as Clinical Research Associate in the Oral and Maxillofacial department at the University of Florence. In these years he was involved in teaching in several Implant Dentistry courses as Assisting Professor.
From 2010 and 2012 he was coordinating a private course in Guided Implant Surgery (Nobel Guide).
In 2013 he awarded successfully his Ph.D., defending a research project on: “Histological and histomorphometric analysis of autologous vs homologs bone block used in implant dentistry”.
Since 2013, Dr. Acocella has been working as an oral surgeon and implantologist in his private practice.
He is member of Società Italiana di Osteointegrazione (SIO), European Association of Osseointegration (EAO), and Computer Aided Implantology (CAI) Academy.
Dr. Acocella is the author of several publications in peer-review journals.
His research interests include implant dentistry, digital implantology, bone augmentation, and hard tissue healing.
