Thanks a lot, guys! After countless elaborations on how to find the last fish in the lake, it's great to see that you haven't quite forgotten about your sailing customers. Products are great for that purpose, so keep it up, please.

Greg mentioned that you needed a compass sensor to make all this work. Doesn't the Axiom GPS give you that? I understand that it will not offer the same precision..
@RaymarineInc
@RaymarineInc 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Tom. Axiom does not have compass sensor. Axiom will provide Course-Over-Ground from the GPS, but that is different from heading because its dependent on the boat moving. When stationary, GPS course over ground is not accurate. Options for compass heading include our AR200 module, the EV1 sensor module, or adding an Autopilot system (which includes an EV1 sensor.)

Very informative webinar. Thank you. If I understood correctly one can talk a sailboat using Raymarine autopilot. I wonder though if it is possible to jibe using autopilot?
@RaymarineInc
@RaymarineInc 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Piotr. When configured for sailing boats, our autopilots can automatically tack or gybe the boat for you. Pressing the +1 and +10 buttons simultaneously will order a tack (or gybe) to Starboard. Pressing -1 and -10 simultaneously will do the same to Port. (If you happen to have the p70r controller with the rotary knob you'll find the tacking controls in the main menu. Select Menu...Tack Port (or Starboard.)) Some sailors may be uncomfortable allowing the autopilot to create a gybing situation. We have a feature called Gybe Inhibit that can be enabled to stop the vessel from turning away from the wind if you were to accidentally auto-tack in the wrong direction. In our p70-series controllers you will find this in Menu...Setup...Autopilot Calibration...Sail Boat Settings....Gybe Inhibit.

On the sailing data screen of MDF, the text that describes each data point is to small. There's a lot of room to adjust text size, is it possible?
@RaymarineInc
@RaymarineInc 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony. The data labels are fixed in size. I will ask our team what could be done to make the bigger, more bold, or adjutable (or all of the above.) If there are items that are particularly critical you could create a new data page and program them to appear there. With fewer items on a page, they will scale up larger. In the Dashboard app go to Menu....Settings....and you'll see a button to add a new data page. You can then pick a layout, then long-press on each cell to assign a data item to it.

Are there any updates to the Advanced Sailing Tools and a list of Polars included in Lighthouse?
@RaymarineInc
@RaymarineInc 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Harley. We greatly expanded the number of Polars included in LightHouse back in version 3.15 (Guadeloupe) when we took the included number from about 100 to 470. We do have more sail content coming too.

Do you only use the notches on the green and red when sailing upwind?
@RaymarineInc
@RaymarineInc 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Al. The red and green notches represent the optimal laylines for going upwind. The orange notches do the same when going downwind.
@AlGrantnz
@AlGrantnz 4 жыл бұрын
@@RaymarineInc Right - so if we are sailing to a way point (not racing but cruising) upwind - those notches will not necessarily tell the heading for best VMG, but tell the best wind angle to sail to make the go fast upwind (which sometimes might also be best VMG).
@redtim
@redtim 3 жыл бұрын
@@AlGrantnz Not an expert on this plotter, but on all others those lines are your "optimum beat angle". they WILL give you the best VMG up wind. Cracking off a few degrees will give you faster boat speeds, but lower VMG.

Hello! How can we activate the laylines on our Axion 12?
@RaymarineInc
@RaymarineInc Жыл бұрын
When Axiom is setup the first time it asks what kind of boat its being installed on. Assuming you answered that it was a sailboat, you can proceed. If you are not sure, you may wish to do a factory reset on Axiom, and during the setup wizard tell it its on a sailing boat. Once that is done, Laylines are first configured by going to Home...Settings...Boat Details. Under Boat Type, select the appropriate type of sailboat from the list (Sail Cruiser, Sail Race, or Sail Catamaran.) Next, right below you'll choose the source for your polar information by touching the button next to Sail Performance and choosing either Fixed Angles or Polar. If you choose Polar, you'll choose your boat from our built-in database. If you choose Fixed Angles, manually add your optimal upwind and downwind angles. That gets the basics configured. Now, on any instance of the Chart application you can long-press on your boat icon and you'll see Laylines as an options that can be turned on. If you go to Menu...Settings....Laylines...you'll see some additional options that control the display of wind-shifts and tide compensation. By selecting a Sail profile, there are some additional screens unlocked in Axiom's Dashboard application that are also optimized for sailing with laylines and polars.

What are all those other miscellaneous green and dotted lines on the lay line chart? It’s confusing !
@RaymarineInc
@RaymarineInc 2 жыл бұрын
The on-screen upwind laylines are color coded red and green to indicate port and starboard tacks. They are rendered as a parallelogram so you can always see the opposite tack as well. The dashed gray line indicates the direct path to the next waypoint. You can optionally turn on a wind shift display as well that will show any variation to the True wind direction over a specified period of time (3, 6, 12, 30 or 60 minutes.) If you are going downwind to your destination the laylines will displayed as an orange parallelogram, adjusted for gybing There is a detailed explanation of the laylines, polars and other advanced sailing features of Axiom in the LightHouse 4 Advanced Operation Instructions. The PDF is on Raymarine.com here: raymarine.app.box.com/s/3t839g2xf6nko4n0h9re535140rknnpz/folder/21066102633 That section starts on page 187.

What about leeway and heeling angles?
@RaymarineInc
@RaymarineInc Жыл бұрын
Hello Pete. A quick way to visualize the leeway angle is to turn on both the COG and Heading vectors on your map display. Long-press on the boat icon and you'll see tickboxes to enable them. You can also adjust their length by setting the Reference Period from 10 seconds to as much as 60 minutes. The difference between the Heading (from compass) and COG (from GPS) is the leeway angle. With the appropriate sensors it is also possible to display heel angle on your MFD or instruments. Our EV-1 autopilot sensor core, our AR200 module, or the new DST-810 Smart Depth/Speed/Temperature transducers all have the necessary sensors inside to calculate pitch, roll, yaw and heel. You can display them in Axiom's dashboard app, sidebars, or floating data items. On i70 instruments, they are also available for display.

For boat shows and static events (not on a real boat) we have a data simulator that feeds a stream of randomized data into the MFDs. Sometimes the simulation comes up with very odd combinations.

Again, nothing for the new Element S chartplotter that is designed for sailors. There is only space for 4 boxes on the chart display, yet you really want at least 6 boxes to include time and distance to go along with SOG COG, local time etc. I did raise this with RM on the forum so they could take this suggestion and implement it to make the Element S a great chartplotter rather than the poor relation to the Axiom.
