Each year, patients with lymphedema mark March 6 as World Lymphedema Day to bring awareness to the disease. An estimated 10 million Americans and hundreds of millions of people worldwide have lymphedema and other lymphatic diseases (LD).
Some people are born with lymphedema (primary), while others develop it after surgery or traumatic injury (secondary lymphedema). Many end up with secondary lymphedema as a result of cancer treatments, such as surgery or radiation. Physical therapy with a certified lymphedema therapist can help control swelling and improve movement to help patients reach their goals.
Check out the video to hear Certified Lymphedema Therapist Megan Leser, PT, DPT of Renue Physical Therapy at McLaren Caro explain what to expect during physical therapy treatment for lymphedema.
