Presented by the University of Edinburgh, Journal of Parkinson’s Disease and Cure Parkinson’s, the next in this quarterly webinar series focused on the role of the gut-brain axis and nutrition in Parkinson’s with Edinburgh University’s Professor Tilo Kunath as chair. Prof Kunath was joined by Professor Per Borghammer of Aarhus University who studies body-first models of Parkinson's; Professor Kieran Tuohy of the University of Leeds who researches the gut microbiome; Richelle Flanagan - a WPC ambassador, co-founder of the Women's Parkinson's Project and My Moves Matter, and registered dietician living with Parkinson's - and Rick Lay, our former head of Marketing & Fundraising and Parkinson's advocate.
One of our panellists, Richelle Flanagan, has published some free e-books on this topic, as well as additional resources for helping people navigate life with Parkinson’s. Please visit her website, ‘My Moves Matter’, to access these and learn more: www.mymovesmatter.com/

Thank you for this great Webinar - have learnt a great deal today. Wondering whether, in the early stages, regular fasting helps Parkinson pts.

Great presentation - on the topic of the ketogenic diet - I find it extremely easy to follow. nutritious and delicious with no problems maintaining my weight - you can eat the prebiotic fibers on a ketogenic diet as well - you can blend the med and keto diets very easily

Thank you all for such an interesting webinar. I suffer from EO PD - diagnosed in 2008 and I am now 63 - and the absorption (or lack of) of Levadopa/diet is definitely my major problem and as was mentioned has taken over my entire life. I have a dietician but, as mentioned, we are all different and, for example, I get severe constipation if I eat carbs during the day but then the protein upsets the Levadopa etc.etc. I live in Italy so I can take advantage of the Med diet and great fresh food but it is still so, so difficult. And as Dr. Flanagan said - sometimes the meds just don't even get to where they are supposed to go. I am going to start the apomorphine pump soon so here's hoping. Would there be any possibility of doing a webinar on this new treatment ? Thank you all again for the excellent insights,

I found this presentation particularly interesting because I was only diagnosed with PD 4 years ago (in Feb 2020) but I had pain & stiffness and anosmia six years before that in 2014! So I really have had PD for 10 years. I am only in the past year starting to develop GI issues (with slow motility).

My husband is fasting, keto diet and exercise. He is doing very well. When he goes off his diet and exercise he has more tremors and pains.

For me proteins and medication are a problem, and it could be interesting to have no ptotein during the day and have them late on the evening, but protein for dinner gives me rls, how do you handle that ?

I have been stumped for quite a while about this question. When I have a bowel movement in a bedside commode and I clean it out. There is usually it looks like a rice thinner left in the pot after I dump it out before rinse it. I’ve had Dr tested for parasites and it came out negative both times. Do you have any idea what this could be, I figure maybe have leaky gut and it’s something to do with that

“We don’t know” seems to be the most used phrase these experts used. Interesting for sure. 🤔

Great webinar. Thank you! Question: for last 5 years my wife has hand tremor periodically L>R when holding a cup or plate with fingers of floppy/relaxed hand. The liquid in the cup or food on the plate end up on the floor from shaking. When she squezzes the handle of the cup with her fingers, the tremor decreases or goes away. She has poor sleep, but not other classical symptoms. Is it a sign of Parkinson's? Any hope for reversing it with the passage of time (fasting OMAD & long 5-7 days fasts, organic whole & fermented food, sleep, exercise)? Thx. BTW, she is 70 yrs old, no other health problems, no meds.

Hmmm .... strange pattern? Correction: We have noticed that it is not so much about floppy/relaxed hand, but her 4th and 5th fingers shake, so if she holds a cup with 1+2+3 fingers without touching by 4+5 fingers, it is okay. This is exactly what happens when she squezzes the handle of the cup = her 1+2+3 fingers are at work but not 4+5. Is it normal or strange? Looks like an ulnar pattern?

I believe I hear mistaken ideas. What is unhealthy about high animal fat?

High animal fat is NOT unhealthy. Anyone who says so is very behind the times.

I have been following the keto diet (with a lot of meat) for over 4 years. I am very strict about that even though I don't have Parkinson's. In those 4 years I have watched hundreds of KZfaq films on this subject. The latest science shows time and time again that meat IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER HEALTHY Keto FOODS is an excellent diet. There are excellent KZfaq channels about (high fat and low carb) keto including 1) Low Carb Down Under 2) Metabolic mind 3) Dr Eric Westman

“So clearly the dietician is the answer.” I know of no dietician who would cause more good than harm. “90 percent of Parkinson’s patients don’t have access to a dietician.” Outcomes would be worse if they had such access.
