Hi Neil, I've watched a couple of your videos and subscribed because you give very nuanced and thorough reviews of the Pay to Play websites. I am a recent undergraduate in human kinetics/kinesiology, so I am a complete amateur to voice acting, but have been told for much of my life that I should do something with my voice. I have had quite a baritone voice my whole life, but also have an impressive range of noises and accents I can do. (so I've been told) Should I focus on getting a decent microphone and preamp etc... and practice narrating/speaking into the mic first before jumping on any platform? FYI, I'm 22 and situated in the Toronto area in Canada.

I would always recommend spending you money on getting the best mic and booth set up you can over the pay to play platforms. You can always join on of the smaller p2p sites and when you have the disposable income you can look at the voices and voice 123. They have lots of auditions but also the biggest pool of competition

Hi there chap, just been watching a few of your videos and am finding your advice very balanced and fair, have a sub! I'm fresh off having sone a radio play for a friend (just for fun) but found that I really enjoyed it and am considering doing professional work. I have a broad range of comical accents, particular attention to diction can speak very quickly and also do monster sounds/extreme vocals. I don't however have my own recording setup. Basically I'm asking where do you think I should start investing time/money?

Hi rich, thanks for the sub. I suppose it depends on budget and spare space you have. Are you looking at a sound booth or just treating a cupboard ?

Thank you for the super helpful video! I liked and subscribed 😊 I’m new to VO work and have just put together my setup. I’m planning to start out on ACX for sure, but I am also curious to know if you think voice123 is a viable option for someone new to the field, or do you have to find experience somewhere else before jumping into a P2P? Would really appreciate your thoughts!

I’ve been w/V123 for years…since their beginning and I Used to book lots projects on a consistent basis.To this day, I have clients from way back to that beginning. But, I have become more and more frustrated with the lack of transparency. On any pay to play site you as a VO actor are going to be competing with thousands of actors for jobs, but it doesn’t seem fair to clients looking to cast expert VO actors that just because you can pay thousands of dollars you’re considered a good or talented voiceover actor - that’s the implication, isn’t it? In other words, by buying that platinum voiceover membership you’re implying that you’re more talented than someone who pays for the premium membership…It’s certainly not the case. Most actiors struggle financially, because they are always honing their craft.Thanks for this great video I’ve made up my mind about what to do it’s just not worth it anymore. And let’s face it pay to play sites only are a few percentage points of how many auditions there are out there and ultimately how many jobs you can book.

Voice123 is a pay to play site. If you get an audition they may ask you to pay for a membership before you submit but I’m not sure. If you get the gig you audition for they put you in direct contact with the person you are working for and they pay you.

Hello I'm looking to start my own audiobook website. I will be focusing on urban fiction. I'm looking for a simple website to turn my projects into audiobooks. I will then take the audiobooks and add sound effects etc. I'm not looking to go through acx because I want to keep 100% of the proceeds through my website. What would be the simplest way or website to hire narrators that I can contact directly? Or is it better to deal with a company that middlemans the job? I have a way to get ghost writers I just need a way to turn the work into audiobooks without alot of hassle.
@CrownStagVoiceover
@CrownStagVoiceover 2 жыл бұрын
Ultimately this will come down to your budget. If you are looking to retain the profit then you will be paying on a per finished hour basis for your narrators. Most pfh prices are around £150. Provided you have that and a platform you should be fine. You will struggle to get good narrations for long form narration reads for less than £100 PFH.

No, you are only paid if you are selected to do the job. These are auditions that dozens of people will also get. You may be selected but you may not. You can audition from anywhere in the world but I’d say only audition in the languages and accents that match your ability

ATTENTION VOICE-OVER ACTORS: If you are a professional VO Actor and a Union member be aware this company is under scrutiny by our Unions and we are not allowed to have anything to do with them. It's just another another scam company that will take your money and if you are paid it is no where near the amount you make from real the normal Union approved engagers. If you're a new VO Talent be aware you will be abused the same as happens to new Film Industry Actors so it is far smarter to train, get a real Agent and contact your local Union for approved engagers. Long ago I did non-Union work and was treated like crap with great difficulty getting my wages even with an Agent because I wasn't their only Client and they just want a commission, any amount. Once I started doing only Union jobs, I was treated many times better, received 10 times as much for Commercials and never had to worry about getting my pay. Here's a quote from my Canadian Union: "Platforms such as Voices and Voices123 undercut hard-fought industry standards by allowing producers to access talent for extraordinarily low rates and minimal terms. These platforms contribute to a proliferation of non-union work and the decline of union work opportunities. There will be significant consequences for Full, Apprentice, and/or Background members found to be working on non-union productions. These consequences may include fines, suspension, and even expulsion from the union."
