Watching yr Maori traditions nd yr Haka,s that spirit go, s right thru me. And I'm thousands of miles away from U in South Africa. Since young I always read about The Maori, s nd was always fascinated until much later the day came when I saw it live for the very first time it completely blew me away so immersed I was in it.

I saw the Brazil women's national rugby sevens team do a haka on TV for the New Zealand women's rugby sevens team. They had come to New Zealand for a rugby tournament, but came two weeks early to train because their coach was Maori. They lived in a traditional Maori meeting house in a big communal room and lived and ate alongside the local Maori who were the coaches tribe. The Brazilian team all got traditional maori tattoos and we're taught maori songs and a haka. Girls do a different style of haka. More demure and graceful yet still fierce with their actions, and not squatting or poking tongues. I tried to look for this haka on KZfaq but couldn't find it. The Brazilian girls nailed it and we're naturals. Maori and Portuguese have the same vowels.

Despite the fact that it's such a raw display of emotion and intensity .. In this context it is an inexplicably high honor to have haka tautoko performed for you (a haka of support). Its associated with love, respect, support and well wishes. It does speak to people on a very primal level so those goosebumps, emotions and feelings you're experiencing are a very normal reaction. Also you dont often see people connect on this level anymore so it can be overwhelming but in a good way.
