Google Drive AND DropBox have been the best cloud storage solution for a long time but recently got rid of their unlimited storage tiers and it's sending shockwaves through the filmmaker and photographer community. That's right, no more google drive unlimited storage and no more dropbox unlimited storage, and honestly, no more good online storage solutions at all. See how Google raised our prices from under $300 to over $11,000 PER MONTH and why this is so bad for content creators... and maybe even what to do now that cloud based file storage is dead.

Preach brother. This should be downright illegal. I only had about 40tb but they offered me zero options. Zero solutions. Wasted hours and hours and hours of my time during busy season moving data around (downloading it to local storage). Very very bad from google. I have closed all my google accounts as a result.

Thankyou for making this, I needed it! Had no idea about Glacier and Cold/Hot/Warm storage! We switched to dropbox before they renegged on unlimited, so for now we're just going to keep our most recent 15 films on cloud storage and manage our couples expectations around that Nothing ever stays the same... haha

Thanks for making this video, it's exactly what I'm going through with my company and nice to know we're not alone. I literally just purchased the dropbox unlimited storage plan this summer only to get that email about it coming to an end within a couple of months. I've come to the same conclusion as you, which is to buy another NAS and I guess keep it offsite as a clone. Not ideal by any means, and a waste of thousands of dollars setting up our cloud infrastructure. PS gave me a good chuckle to see the comments from those who don't understand tiered storage workflows or how much data running a video production company generates.

@@WeddingFilmSchool this is actually unbelievable to me: I was just dealing with dropbox customer service today about an issue of my new storage limit being imposed at 3TB less than it should have been. I wrote to them to get the 3TB re-added to my limit for what was going to be the next 5 years of my honoured plan price, and they straight up said “not going to happen, here’s a refund if you want to close your account.” They would rather not have me as a customer at all than store my date. They were going to make $7,000 off of me over the next 5 years of my plan’s honoured price. I wouldn’t have believed it if it hadn’t happened to me. They just straight up do not care about production users and want them off the platform entirely. Crazy to me that they’d leave that kind of money on the table, but goes to show just how much they can squeeze out of poor saps that AREN’T being grandfathered in. Just wild.

honestly once your data storage needs surpass 100 terabytes I think it's time to look at self hosting yes it can be a little more expensive up front cuz you have to buy your Hardware but in the long run you will have a higher level of privacy and a greater level of control over your data

So annoying! And yet, that's why I keep files for a year after sending them to my clients. In rare cases when a client approaches me after several years and asks for their files because they lost them, I apologize and explain that I am not a storage company. In other words, every client is responsible for keeping their files in their own storage.

I think the problem is that the cost of storage is going up online and not down and our terabytes per user ratio is way off compared to normies. I don’t think it’s gonna get better for filmmakers’s and photographers. I think it’s gonna get worse.

480TB on google drive lol. Dont blame google drive being sick of all these videographers photographers all over the world storing there raw archive footages they will never use again. Back up your active projects yes but archiving your raw files on google drive and forgetting about them no need. Cold storage it your self if your really need to. Lets also not forget google would also have to back this up in multiple locations also. 480tb 2x or more 🤡

My thoughts exactly. Using that much storage was always going to bite them in the ass. Yeh you have an unlimited plan so you 'can' use that much, but don't get all pissy about it when the provide then expects you to pay for it.

@@WeddingFilmSchool it’s not Google’s or any other cloud service’s responsibility to operate in accordance to your less than ideal data management practices. Your service was always subject to their ever changing TOS. You accepted that risk when you signed up 12 years ago.
@WeddingFilmSchool
@WeddingFilmSchool 10 ай бұрын
@RLfilmz you’re totally missing the point. My data practices are perfectly fine. I have three NAS’s, I understand archival and object storage. I get it. I also acknowledged multiple times in the video that they can do whatever they want and that is perfectly normal that they would not want to provide unlimited storage for everyone for all time. The issue is the way that they handled their existing clients, and the implications for creators on an ongoing basis, who are impacted by this. You might not have tons of footage and you might not be very busy as a creator, but a lot of us are. The long-term implications of the insane cost of storage online for people who files are getting bigger and bigger should not be lost on you.
@RLfilmz
@RLfilmz 10 ай бұрын
@@WeddingFilmSchool We have close to 200TB of ever growing data. How they handled it would not matter if creators were using their service appropriately. Just migrate the local data to another platform. And of course the cost is going to be high- you're paying a trillion dollar middleman to do what you can do for yourself. But also, if - you have 3 NAS and have appropriate archival storage - you aren't using cloud as a primary storage method - you understand that any company is free to change their services and pricing then what are you upset about? What is it you expected them to do?

Have you really never looked at the price of a 20TB disk? Thats like $450 a disk at the very least. And you expect Google to let you use an amount equal to 25 x 20TB disks for only $250 a month? I know its a multi-billion dollar company and they don't operate on a consumer level where they buy individual disks, but to make my point lets pretend they do: That would be a $11k + investment for them upfront just having to buy the disks alone, no server, network or electricity bill included. And that $11k investment is JUST FOR A SINGLE CUSTOMER. I think everyone can see that from a business perspective this would not be a very sustainable investment. I get that it sucks that your cheap cloud storage is no longer cheap, but acting suprised while you could've seen this coming from a mile away is really on you my guy.
@WeddingFilmSchool
@WeddingFilmSchool 7 ай бұрын
Did you even watch the video? I literally addressed the fact that it was unsustainable and Google should have never promised this to begin with. Clearly consumers were getting a good deal.It’s the fact that their customer service sucks and they needed to assist customers who they sold unlimited storage too at migrating to proper cloud solutions. They created a problem for us (the consumer). Not the other way around. They should have integrity and help with migration and offer solutions to power users who took them at their word. I also reject the “you idiot. U did it wrong” gate-keeping by people like you. A mega corporation made a promise to consumers that let them grab MASSIVE market share and then changed the terms of service to totally flip the script on customers with NO off-ramp to other services (which they DO HAVE) and your just like “Morons”? You’re ok with companies doing that? We need to force companies to keep their commitments and when they just make MAJOR changes provide reasonable solutions and support to customers. I stand by my take.

Cloud should've never been a primary option in the first place. Be responsible for your own data. The up front cost is higher but you save in the long run and you're the only one that has control over your data.

It’s not about it being primary. It’s about data security and having a 3 tiered storage solution and cloud based storage is still the best and safest way to store data long term. This option is now closed off to any artist with large amounts of data.

Let me get this straight 480TB? Lets do some napkin math here. This requires you to buy 24*20TB drives WITHOUT redundancy or 30*20TB with redundancy. That's $9600 and $12000 respectively. A server by itself without drives will cost you $2000 or more. Now, to factor power usage. I'd estimate 400W is being used per day to run all of them. At 20cents per kwh, you're paying $700 per year. Estimated internet at $50? that's $600 per year All in all the TOTAL will be $14000 + [$108 monthly]. To distribute it to 5 years, $14000+$6500 = $20500 $20500/5= $4100 per year or $341 per month $341 vs what you've paid before which is $250. Reminder this calculation is only for 5 years, if you span it to 10 years, you get more bang for buck!

@RLfilmz
@RLfilmz 10 ай бұрын
@@richardallen08 that’s still 1 basket for the user. If Google decides to do what they did with photos and downscale all of your footage, or if it abruptly shuts down it’s service like it’s done in the past (see Google Gravyard) it doesn’t matter how much redundancy Google has, your footage is still forever changed and outside of your control.
