I don't know how Jim has been able to take care of all those Raccoons for so many years. I usually get home from work very late, about 2:30 or 3:00 A.M. in the morning. When I get home I usually feed about 4 outdoor cats that usually stay in the pole-barn behind the house here in the thumb area of Michigan. Last summer a large mother raccoon began to show up, so I fed her too in the front yard. She was very stand-offish and it took a long time to gain her trust. Eventually when I sat out on the front deck and brought food out she would cautiously approach me, let out a huffing sound letting me know she wanted food. She was also very territorial. She would come up on the deck, lay down near my feet and look out into the yard keeping an eye out for other raccoons. I don't know how she could tell. But if another raccoon was even a long ways away, she would let out a huffing sound or a growl. And when the other raccoon was close enough she would go tearing off the deck chasing it away. A few minutes later she would come back up on the deck and look at me and she was usually panting like a dog since it was hotter last summer than last year. Then she would lay back down near my feet and look back out again keeping a watch for other raccoons. A few times if she was away from the deck for a few moments. Another raccoon would climb up on the deck and approach me looking for food. This one seemed a lot more trusting than the other one, and came right up to me from the very first time. This summer this friendlier one showed up before the more aggressive one did by a few weeks. It turns out both of them are mothers. This other female would immediately come right up to me for food, and even let me pet her with no problems. A few weeks later she brought her 4 baby raccoons with her and they were very tame too, and also didn't mind being petted at all. They all like marshmallows, cat food with raw eggs mixed in. But they especially like honey roasted cashews or peanuts. I found out last week they seem to like raisins more than anything. I brought out a bag of raisins and the mother and her babies loved them. When the ones on the ground were gone, all 4 babies came quickly up to me at the same time looking for more, even the mother hurried up to me and stood on her back legs wanting more raisins. One of the babies grabbed ahold of one of my pant legs with it's sharp little teeth-and began tugging on my pant leg trying to let me know it wanted more raisins. At that point I just started laughing and began backing up and told them all to hold on for a second while I got some more raisins out of the bag for them. I was just worried they were all so excited they would all start climbing up on me or something. The other larger, meaner female raccoon that had showed up last summer brought her babies that were larger than this other raccoons children. She seemed more stand-offish this year than last- I don't know if it's because of her babies being with her. But the first few weeks this year when I approached her or her babies on the ground- she would kind of growl at me and her babies were more skittish than the other raccoons younger ones. After about a month now she's finally approaching me though kind of cautiously like she did at first last year. There's even this very old female skunk I throw out food for just to stay on her good side so she doesn't spray me when I come home late at night. She's at least 6 years old, and she is so familliar with me and know I'm the one that feeds her-that I can literally walk right by her within a foot and she doesn't even bat an eye and I have no fear whatsoever of her spraying me. There's 1 or 2 other skunks that show up quite often as well and I can walk by very close to them too and they don't react or show any indication of wanting to spray me. Last year I was taking some food out late at night for the animals, and the really old female skunk saw me and came practically running up to me she was so excited. My first reaction was shock and this is the only time I was worried at being sprayed because I never saw her react like that. But when she got right in front of me she stopped and looked up at me just waiting for food. A few possums also come for food and they for the most part seem to be the most scared of me of any of the animals. But there is a smaller size one that seems used to me know and wont run if I'm near it. But I can see how much work and food it must be for them taking care of all the raccoons they feed every day. As I found out they really go through the food and are a handful to keep an eye on.

I live in an apartment, and have been leaving food outside my front door all night for a stray cat for a few years. She wont let me near her, or come inside. The food attracted a raccoon, who eventually brought her babies. So cute! The neighbors started to freak out about the raccoon, so I had to stop leaving the food out. I still feed the cat, but bring the food in after she eats. It breaks my heart to not be able to leave food for the raccoon. I just hope the raccoon is able to find enough food somewhere else. I love animals! ❤
