The deal with Becoming Potatoes is that it was commissioned specifically for an event in Project SEKAI, and it’s meant specifically to represent the struggles Rui goes through in the event It’s On! Wonder Halloween! Rui struggles with feeling like he can’t express himself through his art (directing shows) and going through a state where nothing he created worked for him. The song’s lyrics were made for Rui and Project SEKAI, so while the fans of the game might not understand the meaning, in the context of the game the song is meant to be a reflection of those feelings. WxS often has songs commissioned or covers songs with a happy or upbeat sound, but with darker or more serious lyrics. (Wanna just preface that I love your videos! But also I am a huge Project SEKAI fan and I felt the need to explain.)

I also feel like lots of people misunderstand The snow white princess is... because of the upbeat tune and the PjD PV but even though it feels somewhat positive, asa lot of Noboru's songs are. It is open to interpertation but it isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

Another one that is misunderstood is Adult's toy by Utsu P, because of the title of the song people were assuming that it was a typical s£xual vocaloid song but is actually about a young girl being s£xually abused by an adult and then ends up killing off those horrible memories with said abuser (it's quite similar to gomene gomene except the victim wins). Another one is Two faced lovers by Wowaka (RIP) where people though this was about teen pregnancy because of the unofficial music video, when it's actually more about love and lust.

To be fair Becoming Potatoes was a commissioned song aka it was SUPPOSED to be portrayed like that from the start. Other than songs like Two-Faced Lovers or Young Girl A who started to get misinterpreted by fans. Also there are a lot more com songs with sad or dark topics that get portrayed in a happy way, take Color Of Drops (40mP) or Cinema (Ayase) for example. From what I've seen most Sekai songs try to capture what's unique about the producer. Dream Place (EasyPop) and Jackpot Sad Girl (syudou) are two good examples for that but you'll find that in 80% of the songs. Also the producers get mostly assigned to a group by their genre not their themes

Great video, but I really gotta disagree with you on Sand Planet. Hachi has literally said in interviews that he viewed NND as a desert. While it’s certainly not a pessimistic song (Hachi’s said he wanted it to be a rallying cry of sorts, inspiring new people to take to the scene and revitalize it), you can’t blame people for interpreting it as saying “vocaloid is dying” because, well, it literally is.

3:21 Off topic but not really: I'm really happy that 5 and below is selling Vocaloid merch. Like before I ever went to 5 and below, the only piece of Vocaloid merch I found in a store was a Miku acrylic in the Japan store at Disney's EPCOT. But after a 5 and below opened in my town, they ALWAYS have Vocaloid merch in stock (granted, it's only posters, stickers, and calendars, but still, it's a big improvement from not having any available at all where I live). So I'm happy to see other American Vocaloid fans getting merch from there as well.

every single time i try to see people add in "wide knowledge of the late madness" to the steel cage princess series i lose another braincell. obviously, this misconception is driven home by the pv for it adding this additional section relating to dark woods circus right at the end. considering that not only is the pv unofficial but it isnt even done by the same artist, it is very clear how they ended up deviating from machigerita-p's story. speaking of, the artist of the dark woods circus pv had produced a song called "tower of sunz" that has this really nice sequence done in the exact same style as the other pv, complete with this beautiful change in the instrumentation. i physically cannot stop talking about machigerita-p and his influence.

Sand Planet: Little thought experiment. Consider how enormous, rich, and vibrant Vocaloid used to be (I still consider the first few months after Yukari and Ia arrived to be the peak)... producers using dozens of Vocaloids, great songs made with Lily, Cul, Mayu, Galaco, Iroha, Yuki, Gakupo, Kiyoteru, VY1, VY2, Oliver, Zola Project, Fukase, Flower, on and on, all the breathtaking MMD videos, the whole wacky, wild, wonderful extravaganza that was MMD Cup, dojinshis, huge group sings, vibrant discussions, breaking news, and absolutely zero pretense as to sexuality, physical skills, ships, or morals... and then reflect on the fact that *IT'S GONE, ALL OF IT, COMPLETELY, TOTALLY GONE.* That's why I'm perfectly fine with the death of Vocaloid interpretation, _because I saw it happen in real time._ Maybe it's not the "correct" view, but it's definitely the one that makes the most sense to me. If you'd like a less pessimistic take, look at it as a cautionary tale. Don't get hung up on things like age and pairings and how "appropriate" this or that song is, don't credit the Vocaloid for the producer's work, and don't insist that things "have to" be done a certain way, because _this is what happens._ Good things stay alive only they are kept alive, and that is the responsibility of _everyone_ involved. I was hanging out with a couple of people at school who liked Vocaloid. I asked them there favorite songs and one said Vampire by Deco 27*. I commented that the song is great at cover the mature lyrics.They then looked at me and said they liked how Miku looked in the video. This person liked the song but never read the English lyrics.
